Quantitative assessment of wildfire risk in oil facilities.

Despite frequent occurrence of wildfires around the world, the role of wildfires has rarely been taken into account in risk assessment of process plants in wildlands, especially that large inventory of flammable petroleum products in contact with the heat of wildfire can lead to severe domino effects. We have developed a dynamic risk assessment framework by integrating available models of fire spread and domino effect analysis with online maps of wildfire characteristics such as ignition probability and heat intensity to investigate the impact of wildfires on oil facilities. The framework is m…

Climate Change and the Lāhainā Wildfires: Raising Global Awareness as Native Hawaiians.

On August 8th, 2023, Lāhainā, the first capital of the Kingdom of Hawai'i, experienced one of the deadliest wildfires in US history in over a century. Through historical and cultural data, the role of westernization in Maui's regional climate change is investigated. Since the 1800s, Lāhainā has fallen victim to climate-change-driven human activity. Whaling altered the ocean's carbon sink, the sugar industry diverted water from Native Hawaiian farmlands and increased carbon dioxide emissions, the opportunistic invasive, more flammable grasses predisposed the land to fire, and tourism perpetuate…

Hazardous air pollutant emissions estimates from wildfires in the wildland urban interface.

Fires that occur in the wildland urban interface (WUI) often burn structures, vehicles, and their contents in addition to biomass in the nat … pecies like PAH and some organic compounds were several orders of magnitude greater than those from wildfires. We used this emission factor compendium to calculate a bounding estimate of the emissions from several notable WUI fires in the western United States to show that urban fuels may contribute a sizeable portion of the toxic emissions into the atmosph …

The Fort McMurray, Alberta wildfires: Emergency and recovery management of healthcare services.

One of the largest wildfires in Canadian history raged through northern Alberta in May to July 2016, and prompted the largest emergency air evacuation in Canadian history. Central to the challenges were the evacuation of a regional hospital, and the emergency and recovery management associated with healthcare services. This paper describes multiple phases of emergency and recovery management, which employed and adapted the Incident Command System to healthcare services. There were no injuries reported throughout the medical evacuation and recovery of medical services. The leadership and manage…

Impact of wildfires on the air quality of Mexico City, 1992-1999.

Wildfires in Mexico increased in 1998, compared to information for the last 6 years. The average number of wildfires in the Mexico City Metropolitan Area (MCMA) for this year (1998) were 58% (1916 events) more events than the 1992-1997 (average cases 1217 events). Mexico City affected area corresponds to 1.3% of the national affected area. The purpose of this paper is to evaluate the impact on the particles air quality due to the wildfire emissions at the MCMA and surrounding areas. Using the corresponding US EPA emission factors for wildfires, the tons of particulate matter, nitrogen oxides, …

Playing with fire: Wolf response to active wildfires, fire fronts and smoke.

Wildfires are a key natural disturbance in fire-prone ecosystems, but their impacts on wildlife are increasingly significant as fire regimes intensify globally. Although considerable research has examined animal responses to post-wildfire landscapes, little is known about how animals respond to burning fires. While fires often trigger avoidance behaviours, predators may benefit from fire-related hunting opportunities. We present one of the first studies, to our knowledge, explicitly examining fine-scale behavioural responses of a large carnivore to actively burning wildfires, testing whether p…

Housing Displacement, Employment Disruption, and Mental Health After the 2023 Maui Wildfires.

IMPORTANCE: Climate-related disasters are escalating in frequency and severity, yet their population-level mental health impacts-especially in racially and ethnically diverse and geographically isolated settings-remain poorly characterized. The 2023 Maui wildfires, one of the deadliest US wildfires in more than a century, offer a critical opportunity to quantify these effects. OBJECTIVE: To examine associations between wildfire exposure and symptoms of depression, anxiety, and suicidal ideation and to assess indirect pathways of these associations through housing displacement and income disru…

Unhealthy air quality secondary to wildfires is associated with lower blastocyst yield.

OBJECTIVE: To study the impact of unhealthy air quality from the 2020 Oregon wildfires on outcomes for patients undergoing in vitro fertilization (IVF) treatment. DESIGN: A retrospective cohort study. SETTING: A university-based fertility clinic. PATIENTS: Subjects were undergoing IVF treatment from the 6 weeks preceding the wildfires through a 10-day exposure period. Cohorts were classified on the basis of whether subjects experienced patient and/or laboratory exposure to unhealthy air quality. Patient exposure was defined as at least 4 days of ovarian stimulation overlapping with the expo…

Fire up Biosensor Technology to Assess the Vitality of Trees after Wildfires.

The development of tools to quickly identify the fate of damaged trees after a stress event such as a wildfire is of great importance. In this context, an innovative approach to assess irreversible physiological damage in trees could help to support the planning of management decisions for disturbed sites to restore biodiversity, protect the environment and understand the adaptations of ecosystem functionality. The vitality of trees can be estimated by several physiological indicators, such as cambium activity and the amount of starch and soluble sugars, while the accumulation of ethanol in th

Where the Wildfires Are: Correlates of Disaster Preparedness Among Oregon Assisted Living Communities.

Assisted living communities (ALs) serve a growing population of older adults with long-term care needs, especially those with Alzheimer's and other dementias (ADRD), yet their capacity to prepare for hyper-complex climate-related disasters remains underexamined. Using geographic information systems (GIS), we mapped all licensed ALs with the Oregon Department of Forestry's wildfire hazard scores, and then assessed organizational correlates of preparedness with a representative sample of Oregon ALs (n = 321). ALs located in higher wildfire risk areas reported greater confidence in wildfire prepa

Coral reef death during the 1997 Indian Ocean Dipole linked to Indonesian wildfires.

Geochemical anomalies and growth discontinuities in Porites corals from western Sumatra, Indonesia, record unanticipated reef mortality during anomalous Indian Ocean Dipole upwelling and a giant red tide in 1997. Sea surface temperature reconstructions show that although some past upwelling events have been stronger, there were no analogous episodes of coral mortality during the past 7000 years, indicating that the 1997 red tide was highly unusual. We show that iron fertilization by the 1997 Indonesian wildfires was sufficient to produce the extraordinary red tide, leading to reef death by asp…

Context-dependent disturbance synergies: Subcortical competitors may constrain bark beetle outbreaks following wildfires.

Wildfires and bark beetles have historically interacted to create complex and resilient forests. However, recent record-breaking wildfires in western North America raise concerns that the large areas of injured and dead trees could facilitate increases in insect populations that respond to resource pulses. Populations of Douglas-fir beetle (Dendroctonus pseudotsugae), the primary mortality agent of Douglas-fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii), often irrupt following fires due to the resultant ephemeral pulses of defensively compromised hosts. Other subcortical phloeophagous insects are also attracted t…

Exposure to wildfires and health outcomes of vulnerable people: Evidence from US data.

This paper investigates the causal effect of wildfire exposure on birth outcomes and older people's health outcomes in United States (US). The study focuses on three sub-questions for each health outcome: (1) the causal effect of each of the five largest wildfires on individual health, (2) the causal impact of multiple large wildfires on individual health outcomes, and (3) the causal influence of wildfires larger than different sizes within different distances of counties on health outcomes at the county level. The analysis exploits data from National Vital Statistics System, Behavioural Risk …

Sex differences in informational needs and media dependencies during the 2018 California wildfires.

Previous research has suggested that men and women differ in a number of crisis-related behaviors including information-seeking behavior and media dependencies. The 2018 California wildfires provided a context where demographic differences are largely unexplored, as most prior emergency communication research has focused on slower moving events such as hurricanes and storm surges. Participants were identified based on their residence in areas affected by the Camp and Woolsey fires (N = 363). Sex differences were discovered for how people found out about the fires, perceptions of medium utility…

Impact of Fine Particulate Matter (PM2.5) Exposure During Wildfires on Cardiovascular Health Outcomes.

BACKGROUND: Epidemiological studies investigating the role of fine particulate matter (PM2.5; aerodynamic diameter <2.5 μm) in triggering acute coronary events, including out-of-hospital cardiac arrests and ischemic heart disease (IHD), during wildfires have been inconclusive. METHODS AND RESULTS: We examined the associations of out-of-hospital cardiac arrests, IHD, acute myocardial infarction, and angina (hospital admissions and emergency department attendance) with PM2.5 concentrations during the 2006-2007 wildfires in Victoria, Australia, using a time-stratified case-crossover study design…

Wildfire-related PM2.5 and cause-specific cancer mortality.

Wildfires have devastating effects on society and public health. However, little evidence from population-based cohort has been performed to analyze the relationship of wildfire-related PM2.5, an important component of wildfire smoke, with cancer-specific mortality. We aimed to explore this relationship and identify vulnerable populations in UK with lower levels of wildfire-related PM2.5 exposure. The study consisted of 492394 participants (age: 38-73 years) recruited by UK Biobank during 2004-2010. The cumulative wildfire-related PM2.5 within 10 kilometers of residence over three years was us…

The City of Penticton's comprehensive approach to wildfire risk reduction.

From 2017 to 2023, British Columbians experienced four record-breaking wildfire seasons, resulting in reduced air quality, mass evacuations and the destruction of homes, properties and livelihoods. Wildfire risk reduction is vital to breaking the sequence of disaster that has befallen such communities as Kelowna, BC in 2003, Ft. McMurray, AB in 2016, and Lytton, BC in 2021. As the City of Penticton ('the City') is located in a wildfire-prone environment, its Fire Department, FireSmart Team and Emergency Program have worked closely together to facilitate a proactive and comprehensive approach t
