Surveillance of mesothelioma and workers' compensation in British Columbia, Canada.

OBJECTIVES: To determine the rate of workers' compensation for mesothelioma cases in the Canadian province of British Columbia, examine trends in mesothelioma cases and compensation over time, and identify factors associated with compensation status for mesothelioma cases. METHODS: Mesothelioma cases in the provincial cancer registry were linked at the individual level with accepted claims for mesothelioma in the provincial workers' compensation system for the period 1970-2005. RESULTS: 391 of the 485 workers' compensated claims were linked (81% match rate) with a record in the cancer regist

Carpal tunnel syndrome and workers' compensation: A cross-Canada comparison.

Carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) is the source of substantial workers' compensation claims in industrialized countries. Its pathogenesis, however, continues to be questioned. The purpose of the present study was to assess the attitudes of Canadian plastic surgeons toward Workers' Compensation Board (WCB)-supported claims for CTS and to assess patterns of resource allocation across Canada. Sixty-seven plastic surgeons were asked to read a clinical scenario and respond whether they would support a WCB claim for CTS. Provincial WCB offices were contacted and asked to provide statistics surrounding CT

Workers' Compensation Elements in Different Jurisdictions in the United States.

: Over the decades, the workers' compensation system has provided many injured workers with a significant guarantee of both medical and financial support when they have been injured on the job. To be effective, workers' compensation systems at a minimum should include principles that require the addressing of medical causation, determination of an individual's functional ability both pre- and post-injury to include activity restrictions, return-to-work capability and disability, meeting jurisdiction-specific reporting requirements of the workers' compensation reporting requirements, and having

Discretionary Surgery: A Comparison of Workers' Compensation and Commercial Insurance.

BACKGROUND: Workers' compensation is intended for injuries that occur at work and is expected to be mostly for trauma and mostly nondiscretionary conditions. We tested the null hypothesis that there is no difference in the ratio of likely discretionary to likely nondiscretionary surgery between patients treated under workers' compensation compared with commercial insurance controlling for age, sex, and anatomical site for either traumatic or nontraumatic diagnoses. METHODS: Using claims data from the Texas workers' compensation database and Truven Health commercial claims we classified Intern

Barriers to physician reporting of workers' compensation cases in France.

Studies suggest strong underreporting of occupational diseases in industrialized countries. We studied physician-related barriers to reporting of occupational sciatica (with herniated disk). We conducted a telephone survey of 391 general practitioners (GPs) and 96 rheumatologists in southeastern France with a standardized questionnaire and case-vignette of a patient with occupational sciatica. Our results show that 71% of GPs and 78% of rheumatologists would not recommend that the case-vignette patient file a workers' compensation claim, for the following reasons: possible role of nonwork-rela

Alleged B. anthracis exposure claims in a workers' compensation setting.

OBJECTIVES: Workers' compensation insurance in some states may not provide coverage for medical evaluation costs of workplace exposures related to potential bioterrorism acts if there is no diagnosed illness or disease. Personal insurance also may not provide coverage for these exposures occurring at the workplace. Governmental entities, insurers, and employers need to consider how to address such situations and the associated costs. The objective of this study was to examine characteristics of workers and total costs associated with workers' compensation claims alleging potential exposure to

Predicting compensation and medical costs of lumbar fusion patients receiving workers' compensation in utah using presurgical biopsychosocial variables.

STUDY DESIGN: A retrospective-cohort investigation (N = 245) utilizing a review of patient medical records and costs accrued through the Workers' Compensation Fund of Utah. OBJECTIVE: To replicate a previous study of compensation and medical costs in compensated lumbar fusion patients, to identify changes in costs across time, and to identify biopsychosocial variables predictive of current costs. SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: Previous studies have demonstrated that medical costs associated with lumbar fusion have been rising drastically. It is unclear whether rising fusion costs are occurring

Long-term Outcomes of Hip Arthroscopy in Workers' Compensation Patients Compared to Non-workers' Compensation Patients: A Propensity-Matched Study at Minimum 10-Year Follow-up.

BACKGROUND: Workers' compensation (WC) patients often experience inferior outcomes compared with non-workers' compensation (non-WC) patients after orthopaedic procedures. Long-term outcomes for contemporary hip arthroscopy in this group remain unclear. PURPOSE: To compare patient-reported outcomes (PROs), achievement of clinically significant outcomes, and reoperation-free survival between WC and non-WC patients undergoing hip arthroscopy for labral tear/femoroacetabular impingement syndrome at a minimum 10-year follow-up. STUDY DESIGN: Cohort study; Level of evidence, 3. METHODS: Patients

Comparative analyses of workers' compensation claims of injury among temporary and permanent employed workers in Ohio.

BACKGROUND: A small but increasing number of studies have examined the risk of injury among temporary workers compared to that among workers in permanent employer arrangements. The purpose of this study was to conduct a comparative analysis of injury risk among temporary and permanent employer workers using a large dataset of workers' compensation (WC) claims of injury. METHODS: Over 1.3 million accepted WC claims in Ohio during the years 2001 to 2013 were analyzed, including 45 046 claims from workers employed by temporary services agencies. Years of productivity lost among injured workers in Washington state: modeling disability burden in workers' compensation.

BACKGROUND: Few studies have examined the impact of disability from nonfatal work-related injuries and illnesses. We developed Years of Productivity Lost (YPL) as a measure of the burden of disability. METHODS: YPL was calculated for incident workers' compensation claims with compensable injuries filed in 1986 in Washington State. Final work disability status was determined in June, 1993. We estimated YPL by adding actual accumulated time loss and future lost productivity predicted from permanent partial disability awards and pensions. RESULTS: Back and neck sprains were associated with the

Workers' compensation injury claims of aviation industry worker injuries in Alaska, 2014-2015.

Aviation operations in Alaska often occur in remote locations and during inclement weather. Limited infrastructure and staff in some locations often requires aviation workers to perform tasks outside of their specific job descriptions. Researchers identified workers' compensation claims as a valuable data source to characterise nonfatal injuries among Alaskan aviation workers. Keyword searches of injury claim narrative fields and industry codes were used to identify potentially aviation-related workers' compensation claims during 2014-2015. These claims were manually reviewed to verify whether

The Clinical Practice Guideline on Carpal Tunnel Syndrome and Workers' Compensation.

The American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons has released an updated Clinical Practice Guideline (CPG) on the evaluation and treatment of carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS). In 2007, the initial CPG on CTS evaluated diagnosis and in 2008 and 2011, the CPG on CTS assessed treatment. The most recent CPG assesses both diagnosis and treatment in a generally non-controversial way. We assess the potential impact of this CPG on the care of workers compensation patients.

The relationship between attorney involvement, claim duration, and workers' compensation costs.

OBJECTIVE: To determine the relationship between attorney involvement, claim duration and workers' compensation claim costs. METHODS: We identified and compared 738 claims with attorney involvement and 6191 claims without attorney involvement submitted by individuals injured between August 1, 2003 and July 31, 2004 whose claims were paid by the Louisiana Workers' Compensation Corporation (LWCC). At the time of assessment (March 20, 2006), 97.7% of claims not involving attorneys and 57.5% of claims involving attorneys were closed (resolved). RESULTS: After controlling for lost time (temporary

Cervical disc arthroplasty compared with fusion in a workers' compensation population.

OBJECTIVE: Patients with cervical radiculopathy and/or myelopathy are often treated with anterior cervical discectomy and fusion. Cervical arthroplasty has recently been advocated as an alternative treatment. Theoretically, arthroplasty should permit early return to activity and protect against adjacent segment disease. Early mobilization and return to activity may, theoretically, reduce cost to the workers' compensation program. METHODS: A subgroup analysis of workers' compensation patients from the randomized controlled trials comparing Prestige ST and Bryan (Medtronic Sofamor Danek, Memphi

Capturing cases in workers' compensation databases: the example of neck pain.

BACKGROUND: There is a need to more accurately enumerate workers with musculoskeletal injuries who make lost-time claims to workers compensation boards. The objective of this study is to develop an approach to more accurately enumerate these workers. METHODS: Lost-time claims to the Ontario Workplace Safety & Insurance Board (WSIB) were reviewed. Using neck pain as an example, nature of injury and part of body codes were identified to classify cases. Claims of a random sample of 434 claimants were reviewed. The proportion of claimants classified as having neck pain was computed. RESULTS: The

Compensation for musculoskeletal disorders in Quebec: systemic discrimination against women workers?

Criteria for evaluating workers' compensation claims for occupational disease are strongly linked to medical expertise as supported by scientific study, yet decision-makers are not necessarily familiar with the meaning of these studies. While this is a problem for all claimants, who bear the burden of proving that work caused their injury, the adverse impact of misunderstanding of scientific data can have particular consequences for women, whose work more often appears to be benign. This article reports on a study of empirical data drawn from analysis of 314 workers' compensation appeal tribun

Silica and progressive systemic sclerosis (scleroderma): evidence for workers' compensation policy.

The occurrence of several confirmed cases of progressive systemic sclerosis (scleroderma) among male miners prompted a request by a member of the provincial parliament (MPP) of Ontario that the Industrial Disease Standards Panel (IDSP) evaluate the evidence for an occupational connection. A number of publications in reputable peer-reviewed medical journals offer case-control evidence gathered over four decades on three continents showing a rather clear-cut relationship between occupational exposure to crystalline silica and scleroderma. This article summarizes the evidence for a causal relatio
