HIV infection in patients with sexually transmitted infections in Zimbabwe - Results from the Zimbabwe STI etiology study.

BACKGROUND: HIV and other sexually transmitted infections (STI) frequently co-occur. We conducted HIV diagnostic testing in an assessment of the etiologies of major STI syndromes in Zimbabwe. METHODS: A total of 600 patients were enrolled at six geographically diverse, high-volume STI clinics in Zimbabwe in 2014-15: 200 men with urethral discharge, 200 women with vaginal discharge, and 100 men and 100 women each with genital ulcer disease (GUD). Patients completed a questionnaire, underwent a genital examination, and had specimens taken for etiologic testing. Patients were offered, but not re

Determining the burden of fungal infections in Zimbabwe.

Zimbabwe currently faces several healthcare challenges, most notably HIV and associated infections including tuberculosis (TB), malaria and recently outbreaks of cholera, typhoid fever and COVID-19. Fungal infections, which are also a major public health threat, receive considerably less attention. Consequently, there is dearth of data regarding the burden of fungal diseases in the country. We estimated the burden of fungal diseases in Zimbabwe based on published literature and 'at-risk' populations (HIV/AIDS patients, survivors of pulmonary TB, cancer, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, a

Health and education of children with albinism in Zimbabwe.

Albinism is a relatively common genetic condition in Zimbabwe, a tropical country in southern Africa. Those affected have little pigment in their hair, skin or eyes, in sharp contrast to the normal dark pigmentation. This article describes the responses to a self-report questionnaire covering health, social and educational aspects completed by 138 schoolchildren with albinism living in rural areas of Zimbabwe. They reported persistent skin and a myriad of eye problems. Relationships between siblings appeared good, although problems of antagonism, avoidance and fear were encountered among stran

Cataract surgery in Zimbabwe: the way forward.

The adoption of extracapsular cataract extraction and implant surgery as the standard method of managing senile cataracts in Zimbabwe has been hindered by several factors. These are; succumbing to pressure from promoters of intracapsular cataract surgery, inadequate human and material resources and the problems related to implementation. The problems with intracapsular cataract surgery and aphakic correction are well known. Practical methods of reducing the cost of extracapsular cataract extraction and implant surgery have been suggested. Considering the infrastructure and expertise currently

Quality of counselling of young clients in Zimbabwe.

Researchers observed 418 consultations with clients aged 12-24 years at 38 health facilities throughout Zimbabwe and interviewed both the clients and providers. Less than one per cent of clients at these facilities were aged 12-14 years; between 5% and 20% were aged 15-19 years. Compared with older clients, those aged 12-16 years came more often for antenatal care and medical problems and less often for family planning. In sessions with 12-16 years, the most common topics were STDs (48%) and school (46%), while sessions with older clients focused more on family planning (56-68%). Providers rar

Reproductive rights and population control in Zimbabwe.

The author argues that population control in Zimbabwe, in other developing countries, and even in developed countries is targeted at non-whites and at the poorer classes. She discusses fertility vaccines and male sterilization in this context, and makes the point that while the technology of population control flows from the North to the South, resources from the South are flowing North to maintain the economic status quo. "I think that the real population problem is the widening gap between a few greedy, irresponsible people, most of whom happen to be located in the North, and the rest of hum

Traveller's loiasis in Zimbabwe: a case report.

A case of loiasis diagnosed at Wankie Colliery Hospital is presented. The disease was suspected by the history of the patient and the presenting clinical signs, and it was confirmed by identification of Microfilariae loa loa in peripheral blood. The patient was successfully treated with a course of diethylcarbamazine. The paper gives a brief account of the clinical aspects of loiasis and emphasizes the importance of the laboratory methods to differentiate microfilariae. The case is discussed against the background of important diseases in Zimbabwe.

Women and AIDS in Zimbabwe: the making of an epidemic.

As the AIDS epidemic in Africa assumes major proportions, the need to understand the social context in which heterosexual transmission occurs takes on urgent importance. In this article we explore how the intersection of traditional culture with the colonial legacy and present-day political economy has influenced family structure and sexual relations, and particularly the social position of women. Drawing on Zimbabwe's historical experience, we show how land expropriation, rural impoverishment, and the forcible introduction of male migrant labor fostered new patterns of sexual relations, chara

Parasites of the stomach in donkeys of the highveld of Zimbabwe.

Fourteen donkeys from a communal area of the Zimbabwean highveld were examined for stomach parasites during July and November of 1986 and January and April of 1987. All 14 animals were infected. Habronema muscae occurred in 12, Draschia megastoma in 11, H. majus in 9, Trichostrongylus axei in 9, Gasterophilus intestinalis in 14 and G. nasalis in 1 donkey. The lowest level of infection was in January for the helminths and in April for Gasterophilus larvae. The peak burdens of parasites were in July for Habronema spp. and in November for D. megastoma and Gasterophilus larvae. Infections with spi

Mammarenaviruses of Rodents, South Africa and Zimbabwe.

We conducted a survey for group-specific indirect immunofluorescence antibody to mammarenaviruses by using Lassa fever and Mopeia virus antigens on serum specimens of 5,363 rodents of 33 species collected in South Africa and Zimbabwe during 1964-1994. Rodents were collected for unrelated purposes or for this study and stored at -70°C. We found antibody to be widely distributed in the 2 countries; antibody was detected in serum specimens of 1.2%-31.8% of 14 species of myomorph rodents, whereas 19 mammarenavirus isolates were obtained from serum specimens and viscera of 4 seropositive species. Chloroquine poisoning in Zimbabwe: a toxicoepidemiological study.

Chloroquine is commonly implicated in pharmaceutical poisonings in Zimbabwe. A retrospective hospital record review was performed to describe the epidemiology of chloroquine poisoning compared with that of other medicines. All records of admissions to eight referral hospitals in Zimbabwe due to poisoning with single pharmaceutical agents were collated and separated into those involving either chloroquine or other medicines. Case characteristics were compared and a retrospective cohort study performed to investigate the association of pregnancy with chloroquine overdose. Of 544 cases, antimalar
