Acute effects of ammonia and methanol on dominant zooplankton species in the northern Baltic Sea.

To reduce greenhouse gas emissions, an increasing number of ships are expected in future to operate on ammonia and methanol. However, the effects of these chemicals on zooplankton in case of a spill are not yet fully understood. We conducted shipboard experiments in the northern Baltic Sea on seven species of copepods and cladocerans, differing in their size and feeding mode. Zooplankton were individually exposed to chemical concentrations representing realistic spill scenarios for 24-48 h, and their mortality, faecal pellet production and hatching success (only Eurytemora affinis) were measur…

Effect of copper mill waste material on benthic invertebrates and zooplankton diversity and abundance.

Copper (Cu) stamp mill mining in North America from the early 1900s produced a pulverized ore by-product now known as stamp sands (SS). In a mining operation near the city of Gay (Michigan, USA), SS were originally deposited near a Lake Superior beach, but erosion and wave action have moved many SS into beaches and reefs that are critical spawning and nursery areas for native fish (e.g., Lake Whitefish). Larval and juvenile native fish consume zooplankton and benthic invertebrates during their development, and many of these invertebrate taxa may be sensitive to metal contamination from the SS.…

Costs and compensation in zooplankton pigmentation under countervailing threats of ultraviolet radiation and predation.

Evolutionary responses to opposing directions of natural selection include trade-offs, where the phenotype balances selective forces, and compensation, where other traits reduce the impact of one selective force. Zooplankton pigmentation protects from ultraviolet radiation (UVR) but attracts visual predators. This trade-off is understudied in the ocean where planktonic larvae in surface waters face ubiquitous UVR and visual predation threats. We tested whether crab larvae can behaviorally reduce UVR risk through downward swimming or expansion of photoprotective chromatophores. Then we examined…

Differential bioaccumulation of mercury by zooplankton taxa in a mercury-contaminated reservoir Guizhou China.

Mercury (Hg) contamination in aquatic systems remains a global concern with the biomagnification of methylmercury (MeHg) through primary consumers (zooplankton) to fish and humans. In this study, total mercury (THg) and MeHg concentrations were analyzed in zooplankton collected from Baihua reservoir (Guizhou Province, China). Our results demonstrated that THg and MeHg concentrations were strongly correlated to zooplankton community and biomass composition. The THg concentration was significantly higher in micro-zooplankton compared to meso-zooplankton and macro-zooplankton, and MeHg concentrat…

[Non-predatory mortality of the crustacean zooplankton and its possible causes (a literature review)].

General mortality (death rate, d) in natural populations of the crustacean zooplankton is calculated as difference between birth rate (b) and population growth rate (r). The mortality includes both predatory (consumptive) and non-predatory (non-consumptive), or "natural", deaths of individuals due to senescence, diseases and parasites, starvation, limiting physical and chemical factors of anthropogenic or natural origin. Modem methods of evaluation of non-predatory mortality of the plankton crustaceans, including direct method based on live/dead sorting by special staining of samples and measu…

Influence of light in acute toxicity bioassays of imidacloprid and zinc pyrithione to zooplankton crustaceans.

The acute toxicity of imidacloprid, a neonicotinoid insecticide, and zinc pyrithione (Zpt), a biocide used in anti-dandruff shampoos and protective antifouling paints, to three species of ostracods and two waterfleas, including Daphnia magna, was determined and compared under light and dark conditions. Under normal laboratory conditions, UV light had no significant influence on the outcome of toxicity bioassays, although in the case of imidacloprid both EC(50) and LC(50) calculated values were twice as high under the light as in the dark. No influence of UV light was observed on bioassays cond

Sublethal effects of silver in zooplankton: importance of exposure pathways and implications for toxicity testing.

In aquatic environments, organisms are exposed to contaminants via direct uptake from water and by trophic transfer. However, most toxicity tests only examine uptake via the dissolved phase. We compared the response of marine and freshwater crustacean zooplankton to silver following dissolved and food exposure. Silver, like other metals, concentrates in aquatic food chains and may exert toxicity. In standard solute exposure toxicity tests, Ag is toxic to zooplankton at concentrations of 400 nM for marine copepods and 100 nM for freshwater cladocerans, concentrations far greater than those in m…

Pelagic Shuttles of Antibiotic Resistance Genes: Zooplankton as Overlooked Vectors Across Space and Food Webs.

Antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) accumulate in aquatic environments, where they create reservoirs and transmission pathways that can undermine antimicrobial treatments and alter the microbial community structure in ways that ultimately affect human and animal health. However, the contribution of zooplankton in these pathways remains critically overlooked. Emerging evidence shows that compared with surrounding water, copepods and cladocerans accumulate ARG loads that are one to two orders of magnitude greater, acting as microbial hotspots that disperse resistant bacteria across seasons and de…

Increased methylmercury bioaccumulation and community shifts in zooplankton along a boreal multi-reservoir system.

New hydroelectric developments, built to meet rising energy demands, transform natural riverscapes into lentic-like reservoirs while flooding terrestrial systems. This has led to increased bacterial production of methylmercury (MeHg), a neurotoxin with high absorption and biomagnification potential, resulting in high concentrations in predatory fish. Still, lower trophic level processes governing this trophic increase, particularly zooplankton dynamics, are not well understood, hampering accurate predictions, especially for series of reservoirs along a river. We found that in a boreal multi-re…

Toxic Characteristics and Action Mode of the Mixotrophic Dinoflagellate Akashiwo sanguinea on Co-Occurring Phytoplankton and Zooplankton.

The mixotrophic dinoflagellate Akashiwo sanguinea frequently forms harmful algal blooms around the world and has caused massive deaths of shellfish, finfish and birds, yet its toxic mechanism is still unclear. In this study, toxic effects of A. sanguinea on co-culturing phytoplankton and zooplankton were investigated. The results showed that sonicated cultures of A. sanguinea JX13 and JX14, isolated from the Pearl River Estuary, had a significant lethal effect on the rotifer Brachionus plicatilis, with the highest mortality rate of 80%. The highest inhibition rates of A. sanguinea cultures JX1…

Zooplankton community changes confound the biodilution theory of methylmercury accumulation in a recovering mercury-contaminated lake.

In this study, the biodilution hypothesis of methylmercury (MeHg) accumulation was examined in a Hg-contaminated ecosystem that has undergone concurrent changes in nutrient loading and zooplankton community composition. Using a long-term record of 17 years (between 1980 and 2009), we demonstrate that zooplankton MeHg concentrations in Onondaga Lake, NY, are strongly driven by changes in the zooplankton community and body size. MeHg concentrations in zooplankton increased with an increase in body size and biomass. The highest concentrations of MeHg were observed under eutrophic and hypereutroph…

Sea lice treatments on salmon farms have no adverse effects on zooplankton communities: a case study.

The long-term effects of the sea lice treatment products Excis and Slice on zooplankton communities in a Scottish sea loch were investigated at a commercially operating salmon farm over 31 months. Cypermethrin and emamectin benzoate are the active ingredients in Excis and Slice respectively, which are widely used to control ectoparasitic sea lice on farmed salmon. Excis and Slice treatments did not cause basin-wide effects on the zooplankton community. For both formulations, no adverse affects on zooplankton were detected, instead observed changes in zooplankton abundance and community composi…

Lepocreadiidae (Trematoda) associated with gelatinous zooplankton (Cnidaria and Ctenophora) and fishes in Australian and Japanese waters.

We examined gelatinous zooplankton from off eastern Australia for lepocreadiid trematode metacercariae. From 221 specimens of 17 species of cnidarian medusae and 218 specimens of four species of ctenophores, infections were found in seven cnidarian and two ctenophore species. Metacercariae were distinguished using cox1 mtDNA, ITS2 rDNA and morphology. We identified three species of Prodistomum Linton, 1910 [P. keyam Bray & Cribb, 1996, P. orientale (Layman, 1930), and Prodistomum Type 3], two species of Opechona Looss, 1907 [O. kahawai Bray & Cribb, 2003 and O. cf. olssoni], and Cephalolepidap…

Effects of regular zooplankton supplement on the bacterial communities and process performance of biofilm for wastewater treatment.

Biofilm processing technologies were widely used for wastewater treatment due to its advantages of low cost and easy management. However, the aging biofilms inevitably decrease the purification efficiency and increase the sludge production, which limited the widely application of biofilms technologies in rural area. In this study, we proposed a novel strategy by introducing high-trophic organisms to prey on low-trophic organisms, and reduce the aged biofilms and enhance treatment efficiencies in rural wastewater treatment. The effect of three typical zooplankton (Paramecium, Daphnia, and Rotif…

Role of zooplankton diversity in Vibrio cholerae population dynamics and in the incidence of cholera in the Bangladesh Sundarbans.

Vibrio cholerae, a bacterium autochthonous to the aquatic environment, is the causative agent of cholera, a severe watery, life-threatening diarrheal disease occurring predominantly in developing countries. V. cholerae, including both serogroups O1 and O139, is found in association with crustacean zooplankton, mainly copepods, and notably in ponds, rivers, and estuarine systems globally. The incidence of cholera and occurrence of pathogenic V. cholerae strains with zooplankton were studied in two areas of Bangladesh: Bakerganj and Mathbaria. Chitinous zooplankton communities of several bodies …

Regional zooplankton community differences inform freshwater-organism water quality criteria refinement: an eDNA-guided framework.

National water quality criteria (WQC) for freshwater organisms are commonly derived from standardized toxicity datasets, but they rarely account for regional differences in biological communities and taxon sensitivity. Here, we used environmental DNA (eDNA) metabarcoding to characterize zooplankton communities at 30 surface-water sampling sites across four geographically and hydroclimatically contrasting regions of China. eDNA was used to provide taxonomic and community-level information, and regional representative taxon selection was followed by WQC refinement using independently compiled to…

Can flooded organic matter from sediments predict mercury concentrations in zooplankton of a perturbed lake?

Mercury (Hg) and the composition of organic matter (OM) in sediments and large zooplankton (> 190 microm) have been analysed in a perturbed lake (Lake 154) in northern Quebec, Canada. We investigated whether methylmercury concentrations ([MeHg]) in flooded sediments can predict [MeHg] in zooplankton. [MeHg] at the uppermost sediment layers located immediately downstream of an inundated system (LA-40) are 10 times higher than at other sediment stations. Zooplankton organisms sampled downstream of LA-40 contain higher [MeHg] (183+/-50 ng g(-1) dry wt.) than those of neighbouring natural lakes (6…

Seasonal Water Level Fluctuations Mediate Hydrological Connectivity and Shape Zooplankton Metacommunity in Poyang Lake Floodplain Saucer Lakes.

Poyang Lake is a typical floodplain lake hydrologically linked to the middle-lower Yangtze River. Its peripheral saucer-shaped sub-lakes undergo seasonal hydrological alternation between isolation and connectivity driven by annual water level fluctuations. To date, the coupling between seasonal hydrological rhythms and zooplankton metacommunity assembly in these saucer floodplain lakes remains poorly understood. In this study, four representative saucer sub-lakes within the Poyang Lake National Nature Reserve (Banghu, Zhonghuchi, Shahu and Dahuchi) were selected as research objects. Seasonal q…
