Group O low titre only emergency donor panels for small combat teams.

INTRODUCTION: Military elements increasingly operate in small teams in remote areas with no immediate blood product support. Planners and operators may endorse collection of fresh whole blood from pretested donors in emergency situations. The biggest risk of transfusion is the accidental use of ABO incompatible blood which can be fatal. The risk may be mitigated by using only group O LOw (OLO) titre donors with plasma containing low levels of the naturally occurring antibody to group A and B red cells. This paper reviews the ABO blood group distribution in potential blood donors from a high re

Therapeutic apheresis therapy for ABO-incompatible renal transplantations.

The most important transplantation antigen system for organ transplantation is the ABO blood group system. Crossing the blood barrier is usually not done except in emergency cases such as liver transplantations for fulminant hepatitis. Early experiences of allograft transplantations across the blood barriers were discouraging. In the 1970s, clinical trials were started transplanting kidneys of subgroup A2 into blood group O recipients because the tissues of the A2 subgroup express a lower amount of A antigens compared with subgroup A1. The recipients required no special treatment and received

Donor anti-Jk(a) causing hemolysis in a liver transplant recipient.

BACKGROUND: Hemolytic transfusion reactions have been observed in recipients of ABO- and/or D-mismatched marrow, peripheral blood, and solid organs. Passenger lymphocyte syndrome occurs when immunocompetent donor lymphocytes transferred during transplantation produce alloantibodies against host antigens. CASE REPORT: The first case of a delayed, anti-Jk(a)-mediated hemolytic reaction in a liver transplant recipient, caused by passenger donor lymphocytes, is reported here. A 43-year-old man underwent liver transplantation. Six weeks later, the patient underwent a second liver transplant. On Da

ABO hemolytic disease of the fetus and newborn: thirteen years of data after implementing a universal bilirubin screening and management program.

OBJECTIVE: ABO hemolytic disease occurs among neonates with blood groups A or B delivered to group O women. Extreme neonatal hyperbilirubinemia due to ABO disease has been reported, but its frequency is not well known. We sought to determine the odds of developing severe ABO hemolytic disease in the 13 years since adopting universal bilirubin screening/management in the Intermountain Healthcare system. STUDY DESIGN: We conducted a retrospective analysis of neonates born between 2004 and 2016, defining "severe hemolytic disease" as; (1) total serum bilirubin (TSB) >25 mg/dL, or (2) hospital re

Evaluating safety and cost-effectiveness of platelets stored in additive solution (PAS-F) as a hemolysis risk mitigation strategy.

BACKGROUND: Platelet inventory constraints can result in minor ABO incompatibility and possible hemolysis. The aims of this study were to determine the reduction of isoagglutinin in titers of platelets stored in additive solution (PAS) and compare its safety, efficiency, and cost-effectiveness with full-volume and plasma-reduced platelets. STUDY DESIGN AND METHODS: Isoagglutinin titers were performed in paired whole blood donor samples and apheresis platelets collected in PAS (PAS-PLT) aliquot samples by the tube method. RESULTS: A total of 149 pairs of donor/platelet samples were tested: 75

Transfusion errors in New York State: an analysis of 10 years' experience.

BACKGROUND: While public focus is on the risk of infectious disease from the blood supply, transfusion errors also contribute significantly to adverse outcomes. This study characterizes such errors. STUDY DESIGN AND METHODS: The New York State Department of Health mandates the reporting of transfusion errors by the approximately 256 transfusion services licensed to operate in the state. Each incident from 1990 through 1998 that resulted in administration of blood to other than the intended patient or the issuance of blood of incorrect ABO or Rh group for transfusion was analyzed. RESULTS: Er

[A case of ABO blood group incompatibility treated by exchange transfusion].

A patient with ABO blood group incompatibility who was treated by exchange transfusion is reported. A 63-year-old woman with blood group B type Rh (+) was accidentally transfused approximately 120 ml of A type Rh (+) packed red cells. She developed shock state, complaining chilliness, trepidation, nausea and vomiting just after the atypical blood transfusion. Fortunately, we could save her life without any complication by doing exchange transfusion in addition to anti-shock therapy and anticoagulant therapy preventing disseminated intravascular coagulation. The exchange transfusion was perform

Correlation of cord bilirubin levels with hyperbilirubinaemia in ABO incompatibility.

We studied 91 offspring of ABO incompatible preganacies and 30 controls resulting from O--O pregnancies to test whether cord bilirubin levels could be used to predict the severity of hyperbilirubinaemia in ABO incompatibility. Blood group, direct Coombs's test, and serum bilirubin estimations were carried out on cord blood, and bilirubin estimations at 12, 24, 36, and 48 hours of life.

Application of RHD and RHCE genotyping for correct blood group determination in chronically transfused patients.

BACKGROUND: In chronically transfused patients, conventional blood group typing may be impossible because of mixed-field agglutination. STUDY DESIGN AND METHODS: In 27 patients with congenital anemia and lifelong transfusion history, genotyping for D, RHD, and RHCE was performed with polymerase chain reactions. These results were compared with the blood group typing results documented in the medical record. RESULTS: Two of 27 cases had been typed D-negative by serologic tests and D-positive by genotyping. In 20 patients, the CDE formula had been determined serologically according to the medi

Prevalence of naturally occurring non-AB blood type incompatibilities in cats and influence of crossmatch on transfusion outcomes.

BACKGROUND: Recognition of the feline red blood cell (RBC) antigen Mik and the presence of naturally occurring anti-Mik antibodies resulting in acute hemolytic transfusion reactions prompted the recommendation to perform a crossmatch before a cat's first RBC transfusion, but this guideline has not yet become a standard practice. OBJECTIVE: To determine the prevalence of naturally occurring non-AB alloantibodies detectable by tube crossmatch, and to compare transfusion outcomes in cats with and without a crossmatch performed. ANIMALS: Three hundred cats that received an RBC transfusion, with

Identification of blood groups and isoenzymic phenotypes from blood stains, heart blood and nervous tissues after transfusion.

A man aged 42 years died from a hemorrhage resulting from stab wounds in his neck, chest and abdomen. The MN blood group and PGM1 phenotype of the victim's heart blood were inconsistent with those of the blood stains around the victim. The victim was transfused with 4000 ml of blood during the 9 hours before his death. Because PGM1 phenotypes obtained from blood stains at the scene of the crime and from the weapon corresponded with those from the victim's dental pulp, peripheral nerve and bone marrow, the victim's blood groups and isoenzymic phenotypes could be determined accurately.

Blood chimeric twins: an example of blood cell chimerism.

A man and his twin sister were found to have two types of circulating red cells. The man had 89% A1 cells of his own and 11% A1B cells derived from his sister. The woman had 12% A1B cells of her own and 88% A1 cells derived from her brother. The two lines of red cells also had different Duffy and Kidd groups. The lymphocyte karyotype in the brother was 68% XY and 32% XX, and that in the sister was 60% XX and 40% XY. The possible mechanisms for producing different proportions of red cells and lymphocytes are discussed.

[Blood groups and discoid lupus erythematosus].

BACKGROUND: Discoid lesion is the commonest cutaneous finding in lupus erythematosus and chronic types have their own immunological features, with Th1 inflammation profile. Although many diseases have association with blood-group systems, this fact was not enlightened in discoid lupus erythematosus. OBJECTIVE: To investigate the association between blood groups (ABO and Rh) and discoid lupus erythematosus. METHODS: A prospective cross-sectional study assessing clinical information, blood group systems (ABO and Rh), FAN and C4 serum levels from discoid lupus patients without characteristics o
