Hernia occurs when the peritoneum and/or internal organs penetrate through a defect in the abdominal wall. Implanting mesh fabrics is a common way to reinforce the repair of hernia-damaged tissues, despite the risks of infection and failure associated with them. However, there is neither consensus on the optimum mesh placement within the abdominal muscles complex nor on the minimum size of hernia defect that requires surgical correction. Here we show that the optimum position of the mesh depends on the hernia location; placing the mesh on the transversus abdominis muscles reduces the equivalen…

The lateral abdominal wall is comprised of three muscles, each with a different function and orientation. The transversus abdominus, internal oblique, and external oblique muscles span the abdominal cavity between the iliocostalis lumborum and quadratus lumborum posteriorly and the rectus abdominis anteriorly. The lateral abdominal wall is bound superiorly by the lower ribs and costal cartilages and inferiorly by the iliac crest and inguinal ligament. The lateral abdominal wall may be acutely or chronically injured in a variety of athletic endeavors, with occasional acute injuries in the setti

BACKGROUND: Impairments in abdominal wall function are common in patients with hernias, with negative effects on their quality of life, often requiring surgical repair. Despite advances in repair techniques, there is no consistent standard for assessing abdominal wall function throughout the peri-operative period, limiting comparability between treatments. The aim of this scoping review was to identify and appraise all the available assessments of abdominal wall function reported in the literature, with a focus on the assessment methods and tools used.
OBJECTIVES: To identify and review the a

PURPOSE: To determine interreader and intrareader repeatability and correlations among measurements of computerized tomography-based anthropomorphic measurements in patients with pulmonary fibrosis undergoing lung transplantation.
METHODS: This was an institutional review board-approved, Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act-compliant retrospective study of 23 randomly selected subjects (19 male and 4 female; median age = 69 years; range: 66-77 years) with idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis undergoing pulmonary transplantation, who had also undergone preoperative thoracoabdominal com

BACKGROUND: Trumpet playing requires precise embouchure, breath control, and postural support, engaging facial and respiratory muscles as well as muscles within the abdomen, thorax, and neck. Research on muscle activity during trumpet playing focuses mainly on embouchure and its involved facial muscles, whereas studies investigating torso muscles are scarce.
METHODS: In this observational study, the activity of the abdominal, thoracal, and neck muscles of 24 male professional trumpet players between 20-45 years of age were measured with surface electromyography (sEMG) during playing. Electrod

Several pathogenetic mechanisms have been suggested to explain the syndrome of deficiency of anterior abdominal muscles and genitourinary abnormalities which is usually seen in males. We have recently seen four such cases, two males and two females, all of which showed obstruction of the lower urinary tract, with dilatation proximally. We wish to suggest that the atrophy of abdominal muscles occurs following venous infarction, due to gross over-distension of the abdomen.

Multicore myopathy is a rare congenital myopathy that can cause progressive weakness, but it has not been recognized previously to have respiratory consequences. This study describes two patients who developed respiratory failure because of respiratory muscle weakness. Both patients had low vital capacities without evidence of airway obstruction, and CO2 retention. Physical examination found that neck accessory muscles and abdominal muscles were very weak. In inspiration the abdomen expanded, but the rib cage contracted. Detailed studies were done in one patient with magnetometers, esophageal …

Cremaster muscles are present in both male and female developing and adult marsupial mammals. They are complex structures and composed of several distinct bundles of striated muscle fibers provided with: (1) a distinct and extensive innervation; (2) a distinct blood vascular supply; (3) a distinct tendineous origin on the anterosuperior iliac spine; and (4) distinct target structures. The muscles thus seem to be separate anatomical entities and not a part of one or more of the layers of the ventral abdominal wall musculature. Cremaster muscles in males are elongated, are larger than in females

PURPOSE: Although it is well known that the tiny abdominal cavity associated with larger omphalocele enlarges rapidly after surgery, the responsible mechanism remains obscure. The authors have studied the curve of lumbar vertebrae and established a hypothesis in which lordosis of lumbar vertebrae plays a major role in changing the capacity of the abdominal cavity.
METHODS: Fifty-three patients with intact omphalocele and 10 normal newborns as the control were studied. The size of omphalocele was determined from the mean value of the length and breadth of the sac. The curve of lumbar vertebrae

5 Male children exhibiting the typical features of the Prune-Belly syndrome (malformations of the urogenital tract, aplasia of abdominal muscles) are described. Two of these are deaf. This syndrome has also been observed in a few females. Final interpretation of the cause and pathogenesis cannot yet be given. In two siblings with defects of the abdominal muscles an contractures of the joints, but without renal anomalies, a new and hitherto undescribed hereditary syndrome seems to be present.

The anterior abdominal wall, which is composed of three layers (skin and adipose tissues; the myofascial layer; and the deep layer, consisting of the transversalis fascia, preperitoneal fat, and the parietal peritoneum), has many functions: containment, support and protection for the intraperitoneal contents, and involvement in movement and breathing. While hernias are often encountered and well reviewed in the literature, the other abdominal wall pathologies are less commonly described. In this pictorial review, we briefly discuss the normal anatomy of the anterior abdominal wall, describe th

The possibility of heart surgery and vascular surgery and the increased number of dialyzed patients receiving dicourmarin and heparin treatment raises the question of the probable rupture of the abdominal muscles, in particular the rectus muscles, following the onset of lancing abdominal pain. The authors report a clinical case referred to them in emergency conditions. They examine the possible etiopathogenetic causes and underline the symptoms of acute abdomen in patients being treated with anti-coagulating drugs.

Respiratory myoclonus, also known as belly dancer's dyskinesia (BDD), is a rare manifestation of movement disorder characterized by repetitive choreiform involuntary movements involving the anterior abdominal muscles, the diaphragm, and other respiratory muscles. Currently, there is no definite pathophysiology that clearly explains this condition. A 25-year-old male with a known case of BDD presented with an exacerbation of involuntary and continuous writhing movements of the abdominal wall muscles associated with abdominal pain and shortness of breath over the past 2 days. Subsequently, he wa…

Prune Belly syndrome occurs in 1/40,000 live births and predominantly in males. It is characterized by triad: cryptorchidism, abdominal wall, and urinary tract abnormalities. Patients with partial or unilateral abdominal wall deficiency, unilateral undescended testis, and female neonates with abdominal wall laxity are classified as Pseudo Prune Belly syndrome. In the 3%-5% of patients with Prune Belly syndrome are affected by Pseudo Prune Belly syndrome, indeed case reports available are very few. We described a case of a male patient born with a large abdominal hernia. Thoracoabdominal X-ray

OBJECTIVE: To compare the progression of muscle fibrosis of various site and its relation between cardiac deterioration in Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD). In this study aimed to examine the associations between echocardiogram-based cardiac function indices and fibrosis of the abdominal and lower extremity muscles in patients with DMD to facilitate early detection of cardiac dysfunction and identify its predictors.
METHODS: Twenty-one patients with DMD patients were enrolled in the study. The association between cardiac dysfunction and fibrosis of the abdominal and lower extremity muscles w
