A test of the psychosocial vulnerability and health behavior models of hostility: results from an 11-year follow-up study of Mexican Americans.

Previous research has shown that interpersonal conflict and depression are cross-sectionally associated with hostility. Our objective was to determine whether hostility is longitudinally predictive of interpersonal distress and depression and to replicate previous research that suggests that hostility is a risk factor for other health behaviors (e.g., smoking and excessive alcohol use) and psychosocial health problems. We use data from the youngest generation of a three-generation, 11-year follow-up study of Mexican Americans, that represent 251 Mexican Americans between the ages of 18 and 42

The cultural bereavement interview: a new clinical research approach for refugees.

The large number of refugees in the world must cope with the loss of family and homeland. This paper proposes a new concept of cultural bereavement and presents a framework for its identification in the clinical interview with refugees. The cultural bereavement interview explores reactions to personal losses and to losses of both the social systems and the cultural meanings. Eleven areas are systematically explored, the first nine are indicators of bereavement and the tenth and eleventh are "antidotes" to cultural bereavement. The cultural bereavement interview can provide a clinical framework

The Indochinese: strategies for health survival.

Compounding the "culture shock" of the Indochinese refugees were added problems of unemployment, and lack of housing and educational facilities, all leading to emotional distress. Traditional service delivery systems failed to show interest, much less offer needed service to the refugees who were stereotyped as deviant, unmotivated and resistant. The limited service that was offered ignored significant ethno-cultural factors central to effective intervention. An innovative approach was required. This paper describes a unique service program in New York City undertaken by Fordham University Gra

Asian Pacific Islander Desi American university student mental health: a narrative review focused on social determinants of mental health.

Objective: Asian Pacific Islander Desi American (APIDA) university students face unique mental health challenges, including disproportionately low rates of mental health service utilization compared to all other racial/ethnic groups. Despite increasing recognition of APIDA students' mental health needs, the underlying contributors to mental health disparities for these students are poorly understood. This narrative review summarizes the APIDA university student mental health literature from the last decade, focusing on social and structural contributors to students' mental health outcomes. Met

Sexual orientation and demographic, cultural, and psychological factors associated with the perpetration and victimization of intimate partner violence among Hispanic men.

Hispanics are disproportionately affected by intimate partner violence (IPV). Most of the research describing factors associated with intimate partner violence among Hispanics has focused on Hispanic women or Hispanics in heterosexual relationships. The purpose of this study was to explore the relationship among sexual orientation (heterosexual, homosexual, and bisexual), and demographic, cultural, and psychological factors and intimate partner violence among Hispanic men. A cross sectional questionnaire was administered to 160 Hispanic heterosexual men and men who have sex with men. Demograph

Influence of socio-demographic characteristics on DRS-2 performance in Spanish-speaking older adults.

The present study compared the performance of English- and Spanish-speaking healthy controls (HCs) on the Spanish translation of the Dementia Rating Scale-Second edition (ST-DRS-2) and examined the classification accuracy of the ST-DRS-2 and Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) with an age- and education-matched clinical sample. In contrast to previous findings with English-speakers, a stronger relationship was observed between ST-DRS-2 Total scores and education than with age, and despite being matched on both of these variables, English-speaking HCs significantly out-performed their Spanish-

Suicidal behavior in Latinos: focus on the youth.

The multicultural nature of American society presents clinicians and mental health providers with the unique challenge of working with mentally ill patients from many different cultural backgrounds. Although research investigating suicidal behavior among Latinos is limited, the literature suggests the presence of two distinct phenomena: (a) the prevalence of completed suicide among Latinos as a group is lower than the national rate and (b) the prevalence of suicidal behavior among Latino youth between the ages of 10-24 years is greater than in other ethnic groups, especially among females. [Astute strategies of HTLV-1 with driven viral genes].

Human T-cell leukemia virus type 1 (HTLV-1) is the world's first retrovirus with pathogenicity to cause adult T-cell leukemia-lymphoma (ATL) and chronic inflammatory diseases, such as HTLV-1 associated myelopathy/tropical spastic paraparesis (HAM/TSP) and HTLV-1 uveitis. As the virological characteristic, HTLV-1 can transmit efficiently only through cell-to-cell contact. Spread of infection and viral persistence is ingeniously driven by several viral genes as exemplified by HTLV-1 bZIP factor (HBZ) and tax. After the infection, the virus promotes proliferation and immortalization of the infecte

Dialectical behavior therapy for adolescents- bilingual Spanish (DBT ABS): recommendations, examples, and a call to action for culturally and linguistically attuned applications of dialectical behavior therapy for Latinx adolescents living in the United States.

BACKGROUND: Trauma, acculturation stressors, and discrimination are among many factors that place Latinx children and adolescents living in the United States at high risk for mental health distress and suicidal behavior. Despite these well-documented risk factors, mental health providers struggle to continuously engage Latinx youth and families in mental health care, including evidence-based treatments for addressing suicidal behaviors such as Dialectical Behavior Therapy for Adolescents (DBT-A). One barrier to engagement is access to such effective treatments. OBJECTIVE: While highlighting i

Pre-and post-migration factors associated with sleep health among Latin American immigrants in the United States: A systematic review.

Immigrants face unique challenges and stressors before leaving their country of origin and upon arrival to their host country, all of which may impair their sleep health. We synthesized the literature on pre-and-post migration factors predicting sleep outcomes among foreign-born Latin American immigrants to the United States. Following PRISMA guidelines, we searched three electronic databases: PubMed, PsycINFO, and Web of Science. We supplemented our search using Google Scholar and by manually reviewing reference lists from all included studies and four reviews on similar topics. Out of 2581 r

Socialization Experiences of First-Year Adapted Physical Education Teachers With a Master's Degree.

The purpose of this study was to examine the meaning that first-year adapted physical education teachers with a master's degree ascribed to their occupational socialization experiences. An interpretative phenomenological analysis research approach was used, and occupational socialization theory was adopted as the theoretical framework. Five teachers participated in this study. The sources of data were a semistructured focus group interview, semistructured one-to-one interviews, and reflective interview notes. Thematic development involved a three-step analysis process informed by the research

Language proficiency among hospitalized immigrant psychiatric patients in Italy.

BACKGROUND: and aim: Lack of cultural adaptation may risk or worsen mental illness among immigrants, and interfere with assessment and treatment. Language proficiency (LP) seems essential for access to foreign environments, and the limited research concerning its effects on mental health care encouraged this preliminary study. METHODS: We reviewed clinical records of all immigrant psychiatric patients hospitalized at the University of Foggia in 2004-09 (N = 85), and compared characteristics of patients with adequate versus inadequate LP. RESULTS: Subjects (44 men, 41 women; aged 35.7±10.0 ye

Auditory hallucinations, posttraumatic stress disorder, and ethnicity.

The occurrence of intrusive auditory perceptions has rarely been addressed in the study of posttraumatic stress disorder. This study examined the background of 59 individuals with combat-related posttraumatic stress disorder. Subjects with and without auditory hallucinations were compared on demographic military and symptom variables. The occurrence of hallucinations among veterans with posttraumatic stress disorder appears to be more frequent among subjects of Hispanic ethnicity. This may have been related to higher combat exposure or social stresses. The occurrence of hallucinations was unre

Integrated Hemophilia Patient Care via a National Network of Care Centers in the United States: A Model for Rare Coagulation Disorders.

Rare, chronic diseases such as hemophilia and other congenital coagulation disorders require coordinated delivery of services for optimal outcomes. Hemophilia Treatment Centers (HTCs) are specialized, multidisciplinary health-care centers providing team-based care to meet the physical, psychosocial, and emotional needs of people with hemophilia (PWH) and may serve as a model for other rare coagulation disorders. Health-care purchasers, as well as the general medical community, may not appreciate the breadth and quality of services provided by HTCs. They exemplify the acculturalization and actu

Guidelines and scientifically-based spina bifida care: Guidance across the lifespan in a global health context.

The COVID-19 pandemic has reminded us that, if of nothing else, we live in a globalized community. Enthusiasm for evidenced-based medical knowledge is also contagious. Just as the incidence of SARS-CoV-2, the associated coronavirus, has had a borderless impact on global public health, so too neural tube defects have widespread significance. Previously, the concept of "blue marble health" was introduced as a policy framework to illustrate trends in the geographic distribution of health disparities affecting at-risk populations that live, not only in low-income countries, but also in pockets of

Immigrant youth at risk for disorders of mood: recognizing complex dynamics.

The number of youth immigrating to the United States from Latin America and the Caribbean has consistently and dramatically been increasing. However, little research or epidemiological data that capture the mental health status of these youth from their countries of origin or once they enter the United States exist. As a result of migration and the acculturation process, these youth are at risk for exacerbation of preexisting mood disorders or development of mood or other psychiatric symptoms. Pre-migration social and environmental stressors affecting this population include poverty, exposure
