Low frequency transcranial electrical stimulation does not entrain sleep rhythms measured by human intracranial recordings.

Transcranial electrical stimulation has widespread clinical and research applications, yet its effect on ongoing neural activity in humans i … o endogenous slow-wave activity in 66% of electrodes as well as entrainment to rhythmic noise-burst acoustic stimulation in 14% of electrodes. We conclude that low-frequency tACS at common stimulation intensities neither acutely modulates spindle activity during sleep nor theta activity during waking rest, likely because of the attenuated electrical fields reaching th …

[Use of a body acoustic probe and the conduction of brain stem potentials for the determination of sound conduction during tympanoplasty].

A new procedure of evoking brain stem potentials is introduced. Contrary to evoking brain stem potentials by acoustic stimulation via earphone or loudspeaker, we touch the middle ear apparatus at various locations using a piezoelectric transducer with a screwed-on probe, thus causing physiological movements within the sound conducting structures (Fig. 3). As a reaction to this kind of stimulation--1000 clicks with a duration of 0.1 ms were given--far field brain stem potentials can be recorded. The calibration of this special sound probe--not bigger than a pencil (Fig. 1)--was made by equalizi…

Measurement of skin vasoconstrictor response in healthy subjects.

OBJECTIVES: Laser Doppler flowmetry enables non-invasive quantification of skin blood flow and its sympathetically mediated change. Four different maneuvers were performed in 60 healthy subjects aged 20-78 years to investigate their variability, reproducibility and to determine the influence of gender, age and height. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Skin blood flow was measured on the pulp of both index fingers using laser Doppler flowmetry. Vasoconstriction was induced by deep inspiratory gasp, arm dependency, acoustic stimulation and a modified cold pressor test. RESULTS: More than 95% of normal sub…

The effects of amplitude modulation on acoustic reflex decay.

The temporal decay of the acoustic reflex provides the basis for an objective audiological test that differentiates cochlear from retrocochlear pathologies. The classic sign of a neural lesion is a rapid decay of the reflex under conditions of pure-tone stimulation for frequencies of 1,000 Hz and below. This restriction to lower frequencies is due to the fact that even normal ears show decay for higher-frequency signals. At present, it is unclear whether the acoustic reflex decay (ARD) seen in normal ears is related to frequency-specific channels or whether the critical variable is the timing

Electrical middle ear muscle reflex: use in cochlear implant programming.

Programming of multichannel cochlear implants (CIs) requires subjective responses to a series of sophisticated psychophysical percepts. It is often difficult for young prelinguistically deaf children to provide adequate responses for device fitting. This is especially true in setting levels of maximum comfortable loudness, whereby failure to indicate growth of loudness may result in elevation of stimulus levels to the threshold of pain. The acoustic or stapedial muscle reflex has been used previously to provide objective confirmation of acoustic stimulation, and there have been attempts to use…

Paired tone facilitation in dorsal cochlear nucleus neurons: a short-term potentiation model testable in vivo.

It has been suggested that the dorsal cochlear nucleus (DCN) is involved in coding stimulus history or prior auditory activity [Manis (1989) J. Neurophys., 61, 149-161; Manis (1990) J. Neurosci., 10, 2338-2351]. The major output neurons of the DCN are the fusiform (pyramidal) cells which are thought to receive excitatory inputs from the descending branch of the acoustic nerve onto their basal dendrites and significant inhibitory glycinergic and GABAergic inputs to the soma and dendrites. The apical dendrites of these neurons lie within the molecular layer of the DCN and encounter parallel fibe

Amplification of interaural level differences improves sound localization in acoustic simulations of bimodal hearing.

Users of a cochlear implant and contralateral hearing aid are sensitive to interaural level differences (ILDs). However, when using their clinical devices, most of these subjects cannot use ILD cues for localization in the horizontal plane. This is partly due to a lack of high-frequency residual hearing in the acoustically stimulated ear. Using acoustic simulations of a cochlear implant and hearing loss, it is shown that localization performance can be improved by up to 14 degrees rms error relative to 48 degrees rms error for broadband noise by artificially introducing ILD cues in the low fre

A computer model of medial efferent suppression in the mammalian auditory system.

Stimulation of the olivocochlear bundle reduces basilar membrane displacement, driven auditory nerve activity, and compound action potential (CAP) response to acoustic stimulation. These effects were simulated using a computer model of the auditory periphery. The model simulates the medial efferent activity by attenuating the basilar membrane response. The model was evaluated against three animal studies reporting measurements at three levels of the auditory system; basilar membrane, single auditory nerve fibers and whole auditory nerve CAP. The CAP data included conditions where tones were ma…

Effects of transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) on posture, movement planning, and execution during standing voluntary reach following stroke.

BACKGROUND: Impaired movement preparation of both anticipatory postural adjustments and goal directed movement as shown by a marked reduction in the incidence of StartReact responses during a standing reaching task was reported in individuals with stroke. We tested how transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) applied over the region of premotor areas (PMAs) and primary motor area (M1) affect movement planning and preparation of a standing reaching task in individuals with stroke. METHODS: Each subject performed two sessions of tDCS over the lesioned hemisphere on two different days: cat

Analysis of the coil generated impulse noise in extracranial magnetic stimulation.

An intense impulse noise artifact is generated by the coil used in extracranial magnetic stimulation (EMS) of the brain and cranial nerves. In this study we measured and analyzed the sound pressure level (SPL), spectral content, wave form, and time course of the magnetic coil acoustic artifact (MCAA) impulse noise in the sound field and in the ear canal of life-size models of the human cranium. Two different clinical magnetic stimulators and coils were used. Sound field measurements from both coils showed the MCAA to be a transient impulse noise with a rapid rise-time, brief duration, broad ac

Modulation of Corticospinal Excitability during Action Observation in Patients with Disorders of Consciousness.

Brain imaging studies have recently provided some evidence in favor of covert cognitive processes that are ongoing in patients with disorder … l stimuli were non-biological motion and acoustic startle stimuli, considering that sudden and loud acoustic stimulation is known to lower corticospinal excitability in healthy subjects. The results indicate that some form of motor resonance is spared in a subset of patients with DoC, with some significant difference between biological and non-biological motion stimul …

Acoustic enhancement of slow wave sleep improves memory retention by coordinating brain oscillatory rhythms and autonomic activity.

The interplay between sleep slow oscillations (SOs), spindles, and autonomic activity is thought to be crucial for sleep-dependent memory consolidation, yet the precise mechanisms remain unclear. In this randomized, single-blind, crossover study of 20 healthy young adults (25 ± 4 years, 75% female), we investigated whether one night of closed-loop acoustic stimulation of sleep slow waves during non-rapid eye movement sleep stages 2 and 3 enhanced memory retention at a paired word-associates task by modulating these neural and autonomic processes, compared to a sham condition. We found that mem…

Ultrasound-Triggered Tendon-Bone Comb With Axially Graded Electrical Gradients for Tendon-Bone Interface Integration.

Loss of electrophysiological guidance from endogenous fibrous-channeled electrical conduction critically impairs repair of the injured tendon-bone interface (TBI). Clinical analysis indicates that the inconsistent efficacy of conventional electrostimulation (ES) therapy arises from the limited penetration depth and insufficient focusing capacity of electrical currents in biological tissues. In this study, we developed a tendon-bone comb, termed the gradient microneedle (GMN), to improve spatial precision of electrical-signal delivery through multiple independent channel units and thereby promo

Stapedius reflex measurements in open sound-field in children using MED-EL cochlear implant systems.

OBJECTIVES: The study compared stapedius reflex thresholds during presentation of acoustic stimuli in an open sound field (sf-SRT) in paediatric cochlear implant (CI) users with the MED-EL system and children with bilateral normal hearing sensitivity. DESIGN: The sf-SRT was measured using open-sound-field acoustic stimulation with narrow-band noise (NBN) centred at 0.5, 1, 2, and 4 kHz, and broad-band noise (BBN). The sf-SRTs were measured twice in two different sessions. STUDY SAMPLE: Nineteen unilateral paediatric CI users and twenty children with bilateral normal hearing sensitivity, with…

Candidate Key Proteins in Tinnitus-A Bioinformatic Study of Synaptic Transmission in the Cochlear Nucleus.

The aim of this study was to identify key proteins of synaptic transmission in the cochlear nucleus (CN) that are involved in normal hearing, acoustic stimulation, and tinnitus. A gene list was compiled from the GeneCards database using the keywords "synaptic transmission" AND "tinnitus" AND "cochlear nucleus" (Tin). For comparison, two gene lists with the keywords "auditory perception" (AP) AND "acoustic stimulation" (AcouStim) were built. The STRING protein-protein interaction (PPI) network and the Cytoscape data analyzer were used to identify the top two high-degree proteins (HDPs) and thei…

Combined multi-session transcranial alternating current stimulation (tACS) and language skills training improves individual gamma band activity and literacy skills in developmental dyslexia.

Developmental dyslexia is characterized by the pathologically diminished ability to acquire reading and spelling skills. Accurate processing of acoustic information at the phonemic scale is crucial for successful sound-to-letter-mapping which, in turn, is elemental in reading and spelling. Altered activation patterns in the auditory cortex are thought to provide the neurophysiological basis for the inaccurate phonemic perception. Recently, transcranial electrical stimulation has been shown to be an effective method to ameliorate cortical activation patterns in the auditory cortex. In a sample

The relationship between MOC reflex and masked threshold.

Otoacoustic emission (OAE) amplitude can be reduced by acoustic stimulation. This effect is produced by the medial olivocochlear (MOC) reflex. Past studies have shown that the MOC reflex is related to listening in noise and attention. In the present study, the relationship between strength of the contralateral MOC reflex and masked threshold was investigated in 19 adults. Detection thresholds were determined for 1000-Hz, 300-ms tone presented simultaneously with one repetition of a 300-ms masker in an ongoing train of masker bursts. Three masking conditions were tested: 1) broadband noise 2) a…

Auditory brain stem responses in the mentally retarded: audiometric correlates.

In previous reports we have suggested that the auditory brain-stem responses (ABRs) of adults with Down's syndrome exhibit two abnormalities unique to that population: a shortened central conduction time and an insensitivity of peak latencies to increases in stimulation rate. The current experiment assessed the possibility that these abnormalities were caused by hearing deficit rather than central auditory dysfunction. The ABRs of a group of adults with Down's syndrome were compared with those of a group of non-Down retarded and a control group of nonretarded adults. An audiometric examination

Intraoperative monitoring of facial and cochlear nerves during acoustic neuroma surgery. 1992.

Preservation of facial nerve function during acoustic neuroma surgery can be improved significantly by monitoring of facial electromyography (EMG) during surgery. Mechanical trauma during dissection causes EMG activity that can be played over a loudspeaker for direct feedback to the surgeon. Electrical stimulation can be used to locate the nerve even when it is out of direct view, and the threshold for stimulation provides a measure of facial (or other motor nerve) integrity. Cochlear nerve function also can be monitored by the recording of auditory brain stem responses or compound action pote
