Rhein, an aglucone of a laxative-acting anthraquinone, which induces net secretion in the human jejunum and colon, does not induce net secretion under open circuit current in in vitro conditions but reduces net absorption of electrolytes and water. In the stripped rat descending colon at a concentration of 2.10(-4) mol/l, the Na+, K+-ATPase is almost completely inhibited resulting in a decreased net absorption of electrolytes and water. In an open, multicentre study, the short-acting benzodiazepine hypnotic lormetazepam (Loramet) was administered nightly (1-2 mg p.o.) for a period of 7 nights to 665 out-patients with various types of sleep disturbances. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the efficacy of the monotherapy of 15 agents in treating essential hypertension.
METHODS: After 2-week wash-out, a total of 370 patients with seated diastolic blood pressure 95-114 mmHg and seated systolic blood pressure < 180 mmHg were randomized to different therapeutic groups. 24-hour ambulatory blood pressure monitoring was performed before medication and at the end of 8 weeks.
RESULT: All the agents significantly reduced the 24 hour mean blood pressures after treatment except doxazosin, terazosin, and torasemide.

Sustonite, a long-acting nitroglycerin drug for oral use (manufactured in Poland), and some other dosage forms of nitrates were studied and compared. Twenty-one patients with stable angina pectoris of effort, functional classes II-III, were entered into the study.
