The symptom to assessment pathway for suspected chronic limb-threatening ischaemia (CLTI) affects quality of care: a process mapping exercise.

BACKGROUND: Delays in the pathway from first symptom to treatment of chronic limb-threatening ischaemia (CLTI) are associated with worse mortality and limb loss outcomes. This study examined the processes used by vascular services to provide urgent care to patients with suspected CLTI referred from the community. METHODS: Vascular surgery units from various regions in England were invited to participate in a process mapping exercise. Clinical and non-clinical staff at participating units were interviewed, and process maps were created that captured key staff and structures used to create proc

A month in review: longitudinal dynamics between daily PTSD symptom networks, affect, and drinking behaviors in female college students.

INTRODUCTION: Sexual victimization (SV) is common among college women, with approximately half of those who have experienced SV meeting criteria for posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) within a year. Both SV and PTSD are associated with alcohol misuse among college women, often explained by the self-medication hypothesis. Existing literature focuses on overall PTSD severity rather than potential day-to-day fluctuations in specific symptoms, which might play a crucial role in understanding alcohol misuse risk. Studies also examine only same-day or next-day associations between PTSD and drinkin

Downregulation of CASC15 attenuates the symptoms of polycystic ovary syndrome by affecting granulosa cell proliferation and regulating ovarian follicular development.

Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is a type of follicular dysplasia with an unclear pathogenesis, posing certain challenges in its diagnosis and treatment. Cancer susceptibility candidate 15 (CASC15), a long non-coding RNA closely associated with tumour development, has been implicated in PCOS onset and development. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the molecular mechanisms underlying PCOS by downregulating CASC15 expression in both in vitro and in vivo models. We explored the potential regulatory relationship between CASC15 expression and PCOS by examining cell proliferation, cell cyc

Post-acute sequelae of SARS-CoV-2 cardiovascular symptoms are associated with trace-level cytokines that affect cardiomyocyte function.

An estimated 65 million people globally suffer from post-acute sequelae of COVID-19 (PASC), with many experiencing cardiovascular symptoms (PASC-CVS) like chest pain and heart palpitations. This study examines the role of chronic inflammation in PASC-CVS, particularly in individuals with symptoms persisting over a year after infection. Blood samples from three groups-recovered individuals, those with prolonged PASC-CVS and SARS-CoV-2-negative individuals-revealed that those with PASC-CVS had a blood signature linked to inflammation. Trace-level pro-inflammatory cytokines were detected in the p

Factors affecting discrepancies in disease activity evaluation between patients and physicians in systemic lupus erythematosus-The importance of symptoms such as fatigue.

OBJECTIVES: There are often discrepancies in the evaluation of disease activity between patients and physicians in systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). In this study, we examined the factors that affect those evaluations. METHODS: Physician visual analogue scale (Ph-VAS), patient VAS (Pt-VAS), Systemic Lupus Erythematosus Disease Activity Index 2000 (SLEDAI-2k), glucocorticoid (GC) usage and dose, age, Systemic Lupus International Collaborating Clinics/American College of Rheumatology Damage Index, and three patient-reported outcomes (SLE symptom checklist [SSC], short-form 36 questionnaire [S

How Do Modifiable Risk Factors Affect Alzheimer's Disease Pathology or Mitigate Its Effect on Clinical Symptom Expression?

Epidemiological studies show that modifiable risk factors account for approximately 40% of the population variability in risk of developing dementia, including sporadic Alzheimer's disease (AD). Recent findings suggest that these factors may also modify disease trajectories of people with autosomal-dominant AD. With positron emission tomography imaging, it is now possible to study the disease many years before its clinical onset. Such studies can provide key knowledge regarding pathways for either the prevention of pathology or the postponement of its clinical expression. The former "resistanc

Does prior traumatization affect the treatment outcome of CBT for panic disorder? The potential role of the MAOA gene and depression symptoms.

Although cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is highly effective in the treatment of anxiety disorders, many patients still do not benefit. This study investigates whether a history of traumatic event experience is negatively associated with outcomes of CBT for panic disorder. The moderating role of the monoamine oxidase A (MAOA) gene and depression symptoms as well as the association between trauma history and fear reactivity as a potential mechanism are further analyzed. We conducted a post-hoc analysis of 172 male and 60 female patients with panic disorder treated with CBT in a multi-center

Objective and subjective socioeconomic status affect subjective well-being through psychosomatic symptoms: A structural equation modeling analysis.

OBJECTIVES: Socioeconomic status (SES) is generally considered to exert a positive influence on subjective well-being (SWB). However, under the current economic downturn context, this relationship has become increasingly complex. Psychosomatic symptoms, as important factors affecting SWB, may play a crucial role. This study aimed to systematically examine their interrelationships. METHODS: A nationwide cross-sectional online survey was conducted, collecting data on objective SES (oSES), subjective SES (SSS), psychosomatic symptoms, and SWB. A total of 27,876 valid participants (female, 65.9%)

Main and Interactive Effects of Self-Disgust and Affect Intensity in Predicting the Severity of Mental Contamination, Contact Contamination, and PTSD Symptoms.

PURPOSE: Self-disgust has been linked to contact contamination (i.e., experiences of dirtiness caused by exposure to a contaminant), mental contamination (i.e., experiences of dirtiness that occur absent a contaminant), and PTSD symptoms in theoretical work. Separate lines of research have also linked higher affect intensity (i.e., the tendency to experience emotions strongly) to negative mental health outcomes, including more severe PTSD symptoms. However, empirical research examining associations between self-disgust and both contamination concerns and PTSD symptoms remains limited, and thes

Interplay Between Childhood Maltreatment, Alexithymia, Negative Affect and Cognitive Bias in Relation to Psychotic Symptoms and Psychotic-Like Experiences.

Prior research has individually examined childhood maltreatment, alexithymia, negative affect and cognitive biases in the context of psychosis. This study investigated the interplay among these factors in relation to psychotic symptoms and psychotic-like experiences (PLEs) among three groups (n = 1383): hospitalized individuals with schizophrenia (n = 302) and nonclinical individuals at high (n = 205) and at low risk for psychosis (n = 876). Both self-report and clinician-rated scales were conducted. Individuals with schizophrenia and those at high risk exhibited higher measures of cognitive b

The Hidden Factors Affecting Academic Performance Among Chinese Middle School Students: Traumatic Experience and Posttraumatic Stress Symptoms.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: The role of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) in the path from traumatic exposure (TE) to academic performance (AP) is still not explicitly illustrated. The current study aimed to examine the moderator role of PTSD on the relationship between TE and AP, and then to investigate whether this moderator role is influenced by gender. PARTICIPANTS AND METHODS: A sample of Chinese students (n=235) who had experienced the major earthquake of Wenchuan was chosen. PTSD and TE were measured by the Impact of Event Scale - Revised (IES-R) and an earthquake-related experience que

Knee symptoms do not affect walking biomechanics among women 6 months after anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction.

Women with anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction report worse pain and knee-related symptoms, and also exhibit biomechanical changes that may be related to knee osteoarthritis (OA) development. This is particularly concerning as symptom state has been previously associated with knee OA development. The purpose of this study was to compare lower extremity walking biomechanics between women (age: 21.40 ± 8.54 years) experiencing clinically significant knee-related symptoms and women with acceptable symptoms 6 months following surgery. Twenty-eight women with history of primary, unilateral an
