Association between periodontitis and common variants in the promoter of the interleukin-6 gene.

We recently reported an association between interleukin-6 (IL6) polymorphisms (SNPs) and haplotypes and aggressive periodontitis (AgP). The aim of this study was to investigate this association in a larger cohort of subjects, affected by either aggressive or chronic periodontitis. Five IL6 SNPs were analyzed in 765 subjects (167 generalized aggressive periodontitis, 57 localized aggressive, 310 chronic periodontitis and 231 periodontally healthy). Among Caucasians (n=454) there were moderate associations for -1363T allele (p=0.011) and for -174GG and -1363GG genotypes with diagnosis of periodo

Detection of Tannerella forsythia bspA and prtH genotypes among periodontitis patients and healthy subjects-A case-Control study.

BACKGROUND: T. forsythia a gram negative, anaerobe inhabits the mature biofilm present at sites expressing progressive periodontitis. It is a part of "red complex" group which contributes to the pathogenesis of periodontitis. The BspA protein and prtH gene encoded cysteine protease play a vital role in the virulence of T. forsythia. The present study aims to detect the two genotypes (bspA and prtH) in periodontitis and healthy subjects. MATERIALS & METHOD: Subgingival plaque samples were collected from periodontitis patients and healthy subjects (Chronic Periodontitis n = 128, Aggressive Peri

Association between monocyte chemoattractant protein-1 -2518 A/G gene polymorphism and the outcome of the nonsurgical periodontal treatment.

BACKGROUND/PURPOSE: Elevated monocyte chemoattractant protein-1 (MCP-1) is related to severe periodontal destruction. Furthermore, MCP-1 -2518 A/G gene polymorphism affects MCP-1 after inflammatory stimuli. This study analyzed the association between MCP-1 -2518 gene polymorphism and the outcome of nonsurgical periodontal treatment. METHODS: Forty periodontal patients were recruited and MCP-1 -2518 A/G gene polymorphisms were analyzed using polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism assay. The clinical periodontal parameters, including probing depth (PD), clinical atta

[Markers of periodontal destruction in saliva of periodontitis patients].

UNLABELLED: Periodontal diseases result from interactions between periodontal microflora and the multifaceted response of the host. Markers of this interrelationship can be found in gingival crevicular fluid and saliva samples indicating early periodontal disease activity. Studies of host defense mediators in saliva of patients with periodontal diseases are very scarce. AIM: The goal of this study was therefore to investigate interrelationships between mediators of local immunity in host saliva and clinical parameters of periodontal destruction in persons with chronic and aggressive periodont

A novel p.S34N mutation of CAMP gene in patients with periodontal disease.

OBJECTIVE: Recent studies have showed that genetic factors involved in the host responses might determine the severity of periodontitis. hCAP-18/LL-37 is a part of the innate immune response in the oral cavity. The aim of the present study was to investigate the mutation of CAMP gene encoding hCAP-18/LL-37 in the patients with different periodontal diseases. DESIGN: Seventy-eight chronic periodontitis, 72 generalized aggressive periodontitis, and 149 controls were analysed for mutation of CAMP gene using direct DNA sequencing method. Frequencies of p.S34N mutation were compared by Pearson chi

The Oral Microbiome in Periodontal Health.

The estimation of oral microbiome (OM) taxonomic composition in periodontally healthy individuals can often be biased because the clinically periodontally healthy subjects for evaluation can already experience dysbiosis. Usually, they are included just based on the absence of clinical signs of periodontitis. Additionally, the age of subjects is used to be higher to correspond well with tested groups of patients with chronic periodontitis, a disorder typically associated with aging. However, the dysbiosis of the OM precedes the clinical signs of the disease by many months or even years. The abs

Wegener's granulomatosis: an analysis of 33 patients seen over a 10-year period.

OBJECTIVE AND BACKGROUND: Human leukocyte antigens (HLA)/alleles have been considered as risk factors for periodontal disease. However, data from HLA associations is not consistent. Diversity of HLA antigen combinations and en bloc inherited HLA alleles (haplotypes), as known in systemic diseases, can be variable factors in disease association. Therefore, the aim of this study was to investigate the incidence of HLA homozygosities, heterozygosities and estimated haplotypes in German Caucasian groups with generalized aggressive (N = 50) and chronic (N = 102) periodontitis in comparison to contr

Immune response to cytolethal distending toxin of Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans in periodontitis patients.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Cytolethal distending toxin (CDT) is a genotoxin produced by Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans. In spite of its association with pathogenesis, little is known about the humoral immune response against the CDT. This study aimed to test whether subgingival colonization and humoral response to A. actinomycetemcomitans would lead to a response against CDT. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Sera from periodontally healthy, localized and generalized aggressive periodontitis and chronic periodontitis subjects (n = 80) were assessed for immunoglobulin G titers to A. actinomycetemcom

Periodontal diseases in the child and adolescent.

BACKGROUND: Periodontal diseases are among the most frequent diseases affecting children and adolescents. These include gingivitis, localized or generalized aggressive periodontitis (a.k.a., early onset periodontitis which includes generalized or localized prepubertal periodontitis and juvenile periodontitis) and periodontal diseases associated with systemic disorders. The best approach to managing periodontal diseases is prevention, followed by early detection and treatment. METHODS: This paper reviews the current literature concerning the most common periodontal diseases affecting children:

Juvenile periodontitis.

Juvenile periodontitis occurs in children and young adults and can be classified into: periodontitis which occurs in otherwise healthy individuals, and periodontitis which occurs in juveniles with systemic disease. The periodontitis which occurs in otherwise healthy individuals consists of two major forms: juvenile periodontitis, also called periodontosis or localized juvenile periodontitis (LJP), and generalized juvenile periodontitis which includes early onset adult periodontitis, recurrent necrotizing ulcerative periodontitis and the true generalized form of juvenile periodontitis.
