Between October, 1969, and August, 1981, 125 pelvic exenterations were performed by gynecologic oncologists at the University of Alabama in Birmingham. One hundred twenty patients underwent an exenterative procedure that required urinary diversion and a gastrointestinal anastomosis. Gastrointestinal complications accounted for 60% of all nonmalignant indications for reoperation after exenteration. Hepatitis E seems to be responsible for most epidemics of non-A, non-B hepatitis in developing countries. While hepatitis E is not endemic in the United States, it should be considered in the differential diagnosis of the traveler with non-A, non-B hepatitis. We describe a patient with acute hepatitis E, confirmed by serologic testing, after recently returning from India and discuss current knowledge about the pathogenesis, clinical features, and diagnosis of hepatitis E.

Between January 1982 and May 1985, eight patients with avulsion fractures of tibial tuberosity were seen at the University of South Alabama Medical Center. All were boys, average age, 15 years 8 months. Six of eight had a positive history of Osgood-Schlatter disease.
