Impacts of interactions between ADH1B and ALDH2 genotypes on alcohol flushing, alcohol reeking on the day after drinking, and age distribution in Japanese alcohol-dependent men.

OBJECTIVE: This study sought to evaluate the impacts of interactions between the alcohol dehydrogenase-1B (rs1229984) genotype and the aldehyde dehydrogenase-2 (rs671) genotype on alcohol flushing, alcohol reeking on the day after drinking, and the age distribution in alcohol-dependent patients. METHODS: The study subjects were 4107 Japanese alcohol-dependent men who underwent alcohol dehydrogenase-1B and aldehyde dehydrogenase-2 genotyping: 4051 patients were asked about their current or former tendency to experience facial flushing after drinking a glass of beer, and 969 patients were asked

Population-Level Evidence That Alcohol Brief Interventions Improve Drinking and Blood Pressure Outcomes in Patients With Hypertension and Unhealthy Alcohol Use.

OBJECTIVE: Hypertension is highly prevalent in primary care. Unhealthy alcohol use can impact its management and associated cardiovascular disease risks. Alcohol screening and brief intervention (ASBI) in primary care is effective for early intervention for unhealthy use, yet its effectiveness in heterogeneous populations in real-world settings remains unclear. Using electronic health records, we emulated a pragmatic clinical trial to evaluate the effects of receiving ASBI on drinking and blood pressure (BP) outcomes among primary care patients with hypertension and unhealthy alcohol use. A high-resolution PheWAS approach to alcohol-related polygenic risk scores reveals mechanistic influences of alcohol reinforcing value and drinking motives.

AIMS: This study uses a high-resolution phenome-wide approach to evaluate the motivational mechanisms of polygenic risk scores (PRSs) that have been robustly associated with coarse alcohol phenotypes in large-scale studies. METHODS: In a community-based sample of 1534 Europeans, we examined genome-wide PRSs for the Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test (AUDIT), drinks per week, alcohol use disorder (AUD), problematic alcohol use (PAU), and general addiction, in relation to 42 curated phenotypes. The curated phenotypes were in seven categories: alcohol consumption, alcohol reinforcing valu

Drinking to Cope With the COVID-19 Pandemic Mediates Pathways From COVID-19 Anxiety to Alcohol Use and Alcohol Myopia Consequences.

OBJECTIVE: People may consume alcohol to cope with the stressors and anxieties of the COVID-19 pandemic. The present study applied the self-medication hypothesis, tension reduction hypothesis, and alcohol myopia theory to understand COVID-19 alcohol coping as a mediator of the pathways from COVID-19 anxiety to alcohol use and alcohol consequences. METHODS: Participants (N = 477) were undergraduate college students. The mean age was 22.14 (SD = 5.66) years. Gender distribution included 73% females, 26% males, and 1% transgender. Racial categories included 70% White, 11% Latino, 5% Black, 5% As

Effect of very low nicotine content cigarettes on alcohol drinking and smoking among adult smokers who are at-risk alcohol drinkers.

Alcohol and tobacco use are interrelated. This study examined response to very low nicotine content (VLNC) and moderate nicotine content (MNC) cigarettes by problematic drinking. We utilized a double-blind, randomized, within-subjects crossover design of VLNC and MNC cigarettes in two groups of adult cigarette smokers: with at-risk drinking (ARD; n = 23) and without ARD (n = 24). Participants smoked only their assigned experimental cigarette in their home environment for 7 days, and completed laboratory visits, including ad libitum smoking of the assigned experimental cigarette, at the beginni

Alcohol consumption during binge-eating episodes and associations with drinking patterns and alcohol problems among adults with binge-spectrum eating disorders.

Individuals with binge-spectrum eating disorders (BSEDs) clinically report drinking alcohol during binge-eating episodes, but no empirical research has yet been conducted. Drinking alcohol during binge-eating episodes may exacerbate overconsumption of food and feelings of guilt or sadness in response to binge eating. Characterizing this co-occurring behavior is therefore an important first step and contribution to knowledge about a potential contributor to binge eating. The current study aimed to characterize alcohol use during binge-eating episodes among adults with BSEDs and determine the re

Person-specific and pooled prediction models for binge eating, alcohol use and binge drinking in bulimia nervosa and alcohol use disorder.

BACKGROUND: Machine learning could predict binge behavior and help develop treatments for bulimia nervosa (BN) and alcohol use disorder (AUD). Therefore, this study evaluates person-specific and pooled prediction models for binge eating (BE), alcohol use, and binge drinking (BD) in daily life, and identifies the most important predictors. METHODS: A total of 120 patients (BN: 50; AUD: 51; BN/AUD: 19) participated in an experience sampling study, where over a period of 12 months they reported on their eating and drinking behaviors as well as on several other emotional, behavioral, and contextu

Prior experience with flavored alcohol increases preference for flavored alcohol but flavor does not influence binge-like drinking behavior in mice.

BACKGROUND: Binge drinking can lead to various negative consequences and in non-experimental settings, alcohol usually contains flavoring, w … of learned safety from neophobia. However, flavor does not impact binge-like alcohol consumption or alcohol drinking despite negative consequences. Additionally, the current study shows that female mice will consume more flavored alcohol than males, similar to findings from other alcohol studies.

FKBP5 inhibitors modulate alcohol drinking and trauma-related behaviors in a model of comorbid post-traumatic stress and alcohol use disorder.

Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) leads to enhanced alcohol drinking and development of alcohol use disorder (AUD). Identifying shared neural mechanisms might help discover new therapies for PTSD/AUD. Here, we employed a rat model of comorbid PTSD/AUD to evaluate compounds that inhibit FK506-binding protein 51 (FKBP5), a co-chaperone modulator of glucocorticoid receptors implicated in stress-related disorders. Male and female rats received a familiar avoidance-based shock stress followed by voluntary alcohol drinking. We then assessed trauma-related behaviors through sleep bout cycles, hyp…

The Relationship Between the U.S. State Alcohol Policy Environment and Individuals' Experience of Secondhand Effects: Alcohol Harms Due to Others' Drinking.

BACKGROUND: Although restrictive state alcohol policy environments are protective for individuals' binge drinking, research is sparse on the effect of alcohol policies on alcohol's harms to others (AHTO). We examined the lagged associations between efficacy of U.S. state alcohol policies and number of harms from others' drinking 1 year later. METHODS: Individuals with AHTO data in a nationally representative sample of U.S. adults (analytic sample n = 26,744) that pooled the 2000, 2005, 2010, and 2015 National Alcohol Surveys and a 2015 National Alcohol's Harm to Others Survey were linked with

'Zero Alcohol Drinks Are Really Complex': Navigating Substitution and Addition Consumption Issues.

INTRODUCTION: The net benefit of the rapid expansion of the zero alcohol product (ZAP) market has yet to be determined due to the potential for these beverages to produce both positive (substitution) and negative (addition) outcomes. The aims of this study were to: (i) identify factors that can affect substitution consumption; (ii) identify factors that may influence addition consumption; and (iii) explore whether consumers' views on ZAPs are consistent with policy approaches recommended by the World Health Organization. METHODS: Nine online focus groups were conducted with 83 adults residing

Do the Effects of Alcohol Excise Taxes Differ by Drinking Level and by Income Level?

We study the effect of excise alcohol taxes on ethanol consumption and prices paid for alcohol purchases. For our analysis, we exploit an unexpected and large increase in excise taxes that substantially raised alcohol prices in the state of Illinois in 2009. We combine rich, nationally representative household-level data on alcohol purchases with a synthetic control approach that allows us to compare prices paid and purchasing behavior in Illinois with the same behaviors in a weighted set of control states. We show that heavy and moderate drinkers reduced their ethanol consumption by a similar
