Genetic Diversity and Virulence Profile of Methicillin and Inducible Clindamycin-Resistant Staphylococcus aureus Isolates in Western Algeria.

Staphylococcus aureus causes a wide range of life-threatening infections. In this study, we determined its prevalence in the hospital environment and investigated nasal carriage among healthcare workers and patients admitted to a hospital in western Algeria. A total of 550 specimens were collected. An antibiogram was performed and the genes encoding resistance to methicillin, inducible clindamycin and toxins were sought among the 92 S. aureus isolates. The spread of clones with a methicillin- and/or clindamycin-resistance phenotype between these ecosystems was studied using genomic analysis. A…

Virulence, Antimicrobial Resistance and Biofilm Production of Escherichia coli Isolates from Healthy Broiler Chickens in Western Algeria.

The aim of this study was to assess the virulence, antimicrobial resistance and biofilm production of Escherichia coli strains isolated from healthy broiler chickens in Western Algeria. E. coli strains (n = 18) were identified by matrix-assisted laser desorption-ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry. Susceptibility to 10 antibiotics was determined by standard methods. Virulence and extended-spectrum β-lactamase (ESBL) genes were detected by PCR. The biofilm production was evaluated by microplate assay. All the isolates were negative for the major virulence/toxin genes tested (rfbE, fliC,…

Molecular identification of Actinomadura madurae isolated from a patient originally from Algeria; observations from a case report.

BACKGROUND: Mycetoma is a chronic granulomatous subcutaneous infection caused by anaerobic pseudofilamentous bacteria or fungi. It is commonly prevalent in tropical and subtropical countries. Men are more susceptible to the disease due to greater participation in agricultural works. Mycetoma commonly involves lower extremities, wherein untreated cases lead to aggressive therapeutic choices, such as amputation of the affected body organs and consequently lifelong disability. CASE PRESENTATION: In this report, we present the rare case of a 58-year-old man, originally from Algeria with a left fo…

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, phthalates, parabens and other environmental contaminants in dust and suspended particulates of Algiers, Algeria.

Chemicals such as polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), phthalateesters, parabens, siloxanes and squalene, all of them classified as endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs), have been reported to occur in all environmental compartments. The effects of EDCs on development, reproduction, growth, metabolism and obesity constitute a real public health issue. A list of EDCs (> 40 compounds) were characterised in total suspended particulates (outdoor soot: 92 samples) collected in July-September 2016 in an Algiers urban area; besides, settled indoor dusts (36 samples) were collected between Novembe

RETRACTED: Body lice of homeless people reveal the presence of several emerging bacterial pathogens in northern Algeria.

Источник пометил публикацию как отозванную

BACKGROUND: Human lice, Pediculus humanus, are obligate blood-sucking parasites. Body lice, Pediculus h. humanus, occur in two divergent mitochondrial clades (A and D) each exhibiting a particular geographic distribution. Currently, the body louse is recognized as the only vector for louse-borne diseases. In this study, we aimed to study the genetic diversity of body lice collected from homeless populations in three localities of northern Algeria, and to investigate louse-borne pathogens in these lice. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: In this study, 524 body lice specimens were collected from …

Phlebotomus (Paraphlebotomus) riouxi: a synonym of Phlebotomus chabaudi without any proven vectorial role in Tunisia and Algeria.

Phlebotomus (Paraphlebotomus) riouxi Depaquit, Léger & Killick-Kendrick (Diptera: Psychodidae) was described as a typological species based on a few morphological characters distinguishing it from Phlebotomus (Paraphlebotomus) chabaudi Croset, Abonnenc & Rioux. The naming of P. riouxi coincided with its incrimination as a rural vector of Leishmania tropica Wright (junior synonym: Leishmania killicki Rioux, Lanotte & Pratlong) in Tataouine governorate, an arid region of southern Tunisia. The current report finds insufficient evidence to incriminate either phlebotomine sandfly as a vector of L.

Seroprevalence and risk factors of toxoplasma gondii infection in goats from underreported Midland and lowland regions of Algeria.

Toxoplasmosis is a parasitic disease affecting both humans and animals and is caused by the protozoan parasite Toxoplasma gondii. In livestock, the infection leads to significant economic losses, mainly due to reproductive disorders such as abortion, and may cause severe clinical manifestations in pregnant and immunocompromised hosts. Despite its importance, updated epidemiological data on caprine toxoplasmosis in underreported regions of Algeria remain limited. Therefore, this study provides recent epidemiological insights from midland and lowland goat-rearing areas of the country. The presen…

Epidemiological trends and animal-human relationships of brucellosis in Algeria from 2010 to 2022: A one health approach.

Brucellosis is a bacterial disease transmitted from livestock to humans, causing fever, joint pain, and reproductive disorders in animals and people. In Algeria, tens of thousands of human cases are reported, yet animal sources are incompletely captured by routine surveillance. Thus, a retrospective epidemiological study using 13 years of national human surveillance data, combined with a cross-sectional seroprevalence survey of 816 dairy cattle in eastern Algeria, was carried out to better characterize the epidemiological link between human and animal brucellosis. Cattle blood samples were scr…

Detection and Characterization of Colistin Heteroresistance in an Enterobacter cloacae ST48 Strain Isolated From Raw Milk in Algeria.

An Enterobacter cloacae ST48 isolate exhibiting a colistin-heteroresistant phenotype was obtained from raw cow milk in Algeria. Two subpopulations were detected, both carrying the blaTEM-1 gene. While one subpopulation (E. cloacae TS34-a) was highly susceptible to colistin (MIC 0.06 µg/mL), the other (E. cloacae TS34-b) was resistant (MIC 8 µg/mL). Population analysis profiling (PAP) confirmed heteroresistance. PCR amplification revealed the absence of mcr genes in both subpopulations. However, multiple non-synonymous mutations, including a stop-codon mutation in phoP gene, were found in the r…

Microscopic and molecular prevalence and associated risk factors with Toxocara and Blastocystis infection in dogs and cats in Mitidja, Algeria.

Domestic dogs and cats can serve as a source of environmental contamination with Toxocara spp. and Blastocystis spp., and this represents a neglected public and veterinary health problem. We assessed the microscopic and molecular prevalence of these species in a locality in Algeria and identified the associated risk factors. The faeces of 225 dogs and 78 cats were collected in Mitidja between March and July 2022. The samples were analysed by coproscopy and by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) targeting the Internal Transcribed Spacer 2 (ITS2) and Small Subunit Ribosomal (SSU-RNA) of T. canis and…
