Misleading ameloblastomatoid and squamobasaloid rests growing within the nerve: a 100-year-old concept revisited.

OBJECTIVE: The jawbone contains a large number of unnamed epithelial rests that are remnants of the tooth-forming process. One of these uniquely extends naturally along neurovascular bundles, and was originally described at least 100 years ago as "epithelial nests in the bone nerve canal." As this concept has been forgotten in the years since then, any association of epithelial rests with the nerve has remained diagnostically enigmatic. STUDY DESIGN AND RESULTS: In jawbone sections, we have found common resting squamobasaloid and rare proliferating ameloblastic nests within neurovascular bund

Compound and Complex Odontomes: Case Series with Surgical Management and Brief Review of Literature.

Odontomas are the most commonly occurring odontogenic tumor, and earlier they were considered developmental anomaly as the morphodifferentiation of ameloblast does not occur in odontomas. Odontomas are considered hamartoma rather than true neoplasms as histologically they contain odontogenic tissues which are native to the oral cavity. These odontomas are usually asymptomatic and are revealed in radiographic examination but can also present with over-retained deciduous teeth and malocclusion and with other local complications such as infection. Etiology of odontomas is considered to be from ge

Surgical orthodontic treatment of an impacted canine in the presence of dens invaginatus and follicular cyst.

Introduction. "Dens invaginatus" is a dental anomaly which originates from the invagination of the ameloblastic epithelium into the lingual surface of the dental crown during the odontogenesis. It can cause early pulpal necrosis, abscesses, retention or dislocation of contiguous elements, cysts, and internal resorptions. It normally affects the upper lateral incisors. In the following study the authors will discuss the etiology, the physiopathology, and the surgical-orthodontic management of a rare case of impacted canine associated with dens invaginatus and follicular cyst, with the aim of hi

Vascularization of engineered teeth.

The implantation of cultured dental cell-cell re-associations allows for the reproduction of fully formed teeth, crown morphogenesis, epithelial histogenesis, mineralized dentin and enamel deposition, and root-periodontium development. Since vascularization is critical for organogenesis and tissue engineering, this work aimed to study: (a) blood vessel formation during tooth development, (b) the fate of blood vessels in cultured teeth and re-associations, and (c) vascularization after in vivo implantation. Ex vivo, blood vessels developed in the dental mesenchyme from the cap to bell stages an

Infrequent clinicopathological findings in 108 ameloblastomas.

One hundred and eight ameloblastomas diagnosed in a rural black Africa population were analysed for clinicopathologic findings other than those classically described. One patient had a polycystic ameloblastoma adjacent to an ameloblastic fibroma. Two other polycystic ameloblastomas showed aneurysmal bone cyst formation and one mandibular tumour was diagnosed as a keratoameloblastoma. Microscopic changes resembling an adenomatoid odontogenic tumour were present in association with two unicystic ameloblastomas and a HPV18-positive verrucous lesion occurred in the lining of a cystic space of a po

Industrial fluoride pollution. Chronic fluoride poisoning in Cornwall Island cattle.

An aluminum plant on the south bank of the St. Lawrence river, southwest of Cornwall Island, Ontario, Canada, has emitted 0.816 metric tons of fluoride daily since 1973; considerably higher amounts were emitted from 1959 to 1973. The plant has been designated as the "major source of fluoride emissions impacting on Cornwall Island." Chronic fluoride poisoning in Cornwall island cattle was manifested clinically by stunted growth and dental fluorosis to a degree of severe interference with drinking and mastication. Cows died at or were slaughtered after the third pregnancy. The deterioration of c

The involvement of genes related to bile secretion pathway in rat tooth germ development.

Tooth formation is accomplished under strict genetic control procedures. Therefore, exploring the gene network system of tooth development has a very positive practical significance for the study of tooth tissue regeneration and the prevention and treatment of tooth abnormalities. Early bell stage is the initial phase of odontoblast formation and dentin matrix deposition in the process of tooth development. Through RNA sequencing and differential gene analysis of the rat tooth germ samples at cap stage and early bell stage, we found that the bile secretion pathway was the most significant diff

Dental anomalies associated with amelogenesis imperfecta: a radiographic assessment.

Amelogenesis imperfecta, a group of hereditary conditions primarily affecting the enamel, has been associated with dental anomalies, including taurodontism, congenitally missing teeth, delayed eruption, crown resorption, and abnormal enamel density. The purpose of this study was to assess the prevalence of these anomalies in an amelogenesis imperfecta population. The study group consisted of members of 9 unrelated families--22 family members with amelogenesis imperfecta and 13 unaffected family members. Panoramic radiographs were evaluated for taurodontism, congenitally missing teeth, delayed

Expression of the intermediate filament nestin during rodent tooth development.

The developing tooth represents a suitable model for understanding the molecular mechanisms involved in induction, morphogenesis and differentiation of organs. It is conceivable that the developmental changes could be reflected in the distribution of different cytoskeletal components and in this report we analyze the expression of the intermediate filament nestin during rodent tooth development at the protein and mRNA levels (by immuno light and electron microscopy, and by in situ hybridization). Nestin is expressed at all stages of tooth development, but the expression levels increase after b

Immunolocalization of transforming growth factor beta in rat molars.

A prominent cellular event in tooth eruption is the influx of mononuclear cells (monocytes?) into the dental follicle at the onset of eruption. In the mandibular first molar of the rat, this influx of cells reaches its peak at three days postnatally. Because transforming growth factor-beta 1 (TGF-beta 1) is chemotactic for monocytes, we used immunocytochemical methods to determine its localization in the rat molar during postnatal days 1-4 and day 7. The results indicate that TGF-beta 1 displays both a spatial and temporal localization in the rat molar. It is present in the stellate reticulum

Ameloblastoma of the Mandible With Carcinoma Transformation in a Young Adult.

Ameloblastic carcinoma (AC) is a rare and aggressive malignant epithelial odontogenic tumor making up less than 1% of malignant head and neck tumors. The majority of cases occur in the mandible with a minority occurring in the maxilla. Most occur de novo, while rare cases of AC have resulted from transformation from ameloblastoma. Here, we present a case in which a 30-year-old man presented with proptosis and a recurrent right temporal mass, which had been previously diagnosed as ameloblastoma on surgical pathology. CT findings demonstrated local invasion, and he was subsequently taken to the

Primordial odontogenic tumor: report of 2 new cases.

Primordial odontogenic tumor (POT) is a recently described benign odontogenic tumor, with only 16 cases reported in the literature. We present 2 new cases of POT affecting the mandible. Case 1 is that of 12-year-old girl with an asymptomatic, slow-growing mass, causing facial asymmetry. Radiography showed a well-defined unilocular radiolucency surrounding an impacted second premolar. Case 2 is that of a 13-year-old girl with a mass involving the crown of the unerupted third molar and showing similar radiographic features. Microscopically, both lesions were composed of variably cellular fibromy

Calretinin expression in odontogenic cysts and odontogenic tumors and the possible role of calretinin in pathogenesis of ameloblastoma.

INTRODUCTION: Histopathological diagnosis of odontogenic cysts and tumors is a task mostly accomplished with hematoxylin and eosin staining. However, the use of additional diagnostic modalities such as immunohistochemistry may be necessary in histologically similar lesions. The reports of studies which have used calretinin as an immunohistochemical marker for ameloblastoma have been conflicting. AIM: The aim of the study was to evaluate the use of calretinin as a specific diagnostic marker for ameloblastoma and observe its expression in odontogenic cysts and other odontogenic tumors. Spatiotemporal cell landscape of human embryonic tooth development.

Understanding the cellular composition and trajectory of human tooth development is valuable for dentistry and stem cell engineering research. Previous single-cell studies have focused on mature human teeth and developing mouse teeth, but the cell landscape of human embryonic dental development is still unknown. In this study, tooth germ tissues were collected from aborted foetus (17-24 weeks) for single-cell RNA sequence and spatial transcriptome analysis. The cells were classified into seven subclusters of epithelium, and seven clusters of mesenchyme, as well as other cell types such as Schw

Histological evaluation of dog permanent teeth after traumatic intrusion of their primary predecessors.

The aims of this study were to analyze the histomorphology of developing permanent teeth whose primary teeth had suffered traumatic intrusion, as well as to compare the influence of immediate extraction of the intruded tooth to passive re-eruption. Nine dogs from 45 to 50 days old were submitted to the intrusion of the maxillary central and lateral primary incisors using a force applicator adapted to the teeth incisal cuspids. The right side intruded teeth were kept in their sockets and the ones on the left side were extracted 30 min later. After a postoperatory periods of 30 and 60 days, four

Expression of a 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D3 membrane-associated rapid-response steroid binding protein during human tooth and bone development and biomineralization.

The calciotropic hormone 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D3 [1,25(OH)2D3] has been established to control skeletal tissue formation and biomineralization via the regulation of gene expression. This action involves the well-characterized nuclear 1,25(OH)2D3 receptor. However, it has been recognized that several cellular responses to 1,25(OH)2D3 may not to be related to the exclusive nuclear receptor. Indeed, this secosteroid is able to generate rapid responses that have been proposed to be mediated by interactions of the ligand, which is a putative cell membrane-associated rapid-response steroid (MARRS)
