Potential antiviral peptides targeting the SARS-CoV-2 spike protein.

BACKGROUND: The coronavirus disease caused by the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection became an international pandemic and created a public health crisis. The binding of the viral Spike glycoprotein to the human cell receptor angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (ACE2) initiates viral infection. The development of efficient treatments to combat coronavirus disease is considered essential. METHODS: An in silico approach was employed to design amino acid peptide inhibitor against the receptor-binding domain (RBD) of the SARS-CoV-2 spike protein. The designed inhibi

The retina and retinal pigment epithelium differ in nitrogen metabolism and are metabolically connected.

Defects in energy metabolism in either the retina or the immediately adjacent retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) underlie retinal degeneration, but the metabolic dependence between retina and RPE remains unclear. Nitrogen-containing metabolites such as amino acids are essential for energy metabolism. Here, we found that 15N-labeled ammonium is predominantly assimilated into glutamine in both the retina and RPE/choroid ex vivo [15N]Ammonium tracing in vivo show that, like the brain, the retina can synthesize asparagine from ammonium, but RPE/choroid and the liver cannot. However, unless present a

[The characteristics of parenteral feeding in patients with kidney failure].

The peculiarities of parenteral nutrition (PN) in patients with renal insufficiency are related first and foremost to the nature of acute renal failure (ARF). The classification of the latter employed shows that it is a matter of a secondary condition, readily responsive to a number of risk factors. To make the diagnosis numerous laboratory examinations, indicators and tests, and the correlations between them are evaluated. Apart from characterizing the kidney function, they make part of the modern basis underlying the differential diagnosis and therapeutic approach. The author's views and exp

d-Histidine inhibits Streptococcus mutans growth as a potential anti-caries agent.

BACKGROUND: Dental caries is a bacterial-mediated infectious disease that affects the hard tissues of the tooth, with Streptococcus mutans being the primary cariogenic pathogen due to its robust biofilm-forming ability. Controlling biofilm formation is essential for caries prevention. Recent studies have indicated that D-amino acids, which are not incorporated into proteins, play regulatory roles in bacterial processes such as growth inhibition and biofilm dispersal. However, whether D-amino acids can inhibit the growth of S. mutans remains controversial. This study aimed to investigate the ef

Free Amino Acids and Volatile Aroma Compounds in Watermelon Rind, Flesh, and Three Rind-Flesh Juices.

Watermelon rind is treated as agricultural waste, causing biomass loss and environmental issues. This study aimed to identify free amino acids and volatiles in watermelon rind, flesh, and rind-flesh juice blends with ratios of 10%, 20%, and 30%. Among the 16 free amino acids quantified, watermelon rind alone contained higher total amino acids (165 mg/100 g fresh weight) compared to flesh alone (146 mg/100 g). The rind had significantly higher (1.5×) and dominant amounts of citrulline and arginine (61.4 and 53.8 mg/100 g, respectively) than flesh. The rind, however, contained significantly lowe

The digestible indispensable amino acid score (DIAAS) in eggs and egg-containing breakfast meals is greater than in toast breads or hash browns served without eggs.

The objectives of this experiment were to determine the digestible indispensable amino acid score (DIAAS) for eggs cooked in different forms and in traditional egg-bread or egg-hash brown combinations, and to test the hypothesis that DIAAS in eggs is greater than in breads or potatoes. Nine ileal cannulated gilts (average initial body weight: 51.1 ± 6.0 kg) were allotted to a 9 × 6 Youden square design with nine diets and six 7-day periods. Fried egg, boiled egg, scrambled egg, English muffin, Texas toast, and hash brown were included in the experiment. Six diets each contained one source of p

Changes in body composition and meat quality in response to dietary amino acid provision in finishing broilers.

In order to control and optimize chicken quality products, it is necessary to improve the description of the responses to dietary amino acid (AA) concentration in terms of carcass composition and meat quality, especially during the finishing period. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of Lysine (Lys, i.e. a limiting AA used as reference in AA nutrition) and AA other than Lys (AA effect). In total, 12 experimental diets were formulated with four levels of digestible Lys content (7, 8.5, 10 and 11.5 g/kg) combined with either a low (AA-), adequate control (AAc) and high (AA+) am

Acute Effects of Oral Microbial Protease Co-ingestion with Whey Protein on Postprandial Plasma Amino Acid Concentrations, Appetite, and Satiety in Healthy Adults: A Randomized, Double-Blind, Placebo-Controlled, Crossover Clinical Trial.

BACKGROUND: Proteases are enzymes that breakdown proteins into peptides and amino acids. When co-ingested with dietary protein, proteases may enhance digestion, increase postprandial plasma amino acid concentration, and affect gut hormones, appetite, and/or satiety. OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to assess the effects of a mixture of 3 microbial protease preparations (P3) on postprandial plasma amino acid concentration when co-ingested with whey protein concentrate (WPC) in healthy young adults. METHODS: P3 was first tested in vitro for proteolytic effects in a static simulation of or

[Nitrogen metabolism in various forms of protein-vitamin deficiency].

Experiments were made on rats to study the effect of protein deficiency, amino acid unbalance and vitamin B1, A, E, C deficiency on the weight gain of rats, on the eating up of feed, the blood content of nitrogenous components and their excretion with urine and feces. The feeding of the diets deficient in protein, essential amino acids and vitamins leads to substantial changes in nitrogenous metabolism. Such alimentary disorders are followed by the reduced assimilability and biological value of food proteins.

Down-Regulation of Placental Transport of Amino Acids Precedes the Development of Intrauterine Growth Restriction in Maternal Nutrient Restricted Baboons.

Intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR) is an important risk factor for perinatal complications and adult disease. IUGR is associated with down-regulation of placental amino acid transporter expression and activity at birth. It is unknown whether these changes are a cause or a consequence of human IUGR. We hypothesized that placental amino acid transport capacity is reduced prior to onset of reduced fetal growth in baboons with maternal nutrient restriction (MNR). Pregnant baboons were fed either a control (n = 8) or MNR diet (70% of control diet, n = 9) from Gestational Day 30. At Gestational

PoMet3 and PoMet14 associated with sulfate assimilation are essential for conidiogenesis and pathogenicity in Pyricularia oryzae.

Pyricularia oryzae is the causal agent of blast disease on staple gramineous crops. Sulphur is an essential element for the biosynthesis of cysteine and methionine in fungi. Here, we targeted the P. oryzae PoMET3 encoding the enzyme ATP sulfurylase, and PoMET14 encoding the APS (adenosine-5'-phosphosulphate) kinase that are involved in sulfate assimilation and sulphur-containing amino acids biosynthesis. In P. oryzae, deletion of PoMET3 or PoMET14 separately results in defects of conidiophore formation, significant impairments in conidiation, methionine and cysteine auxotrophy, limited invasiv

Nutrition of the fetus and the premature infant.

Developments in fetal and placental nutrition have highlighted the interaction of the placenta and fetal liver for the exchange and metabolism of nutrients. Of particular importance is the exchange of serine and glycine and their interconversion within these two organs and the exchange of glutamine and glutamate. Placental metabolism of nutrients and the placenta's role in the production and utilization of certain amino acids alters significantly the delivery rate of nutrients into the fetal circulation. Postnatal nutrition has focused on the role of early nutritional intervention in the extre

Chiral Amplification of Phosphoramidates of Amines and Amino Acids in Water.

The origin of biomolecular homochirality continues to be one of the most fascinating aspects of prebiotic chemistry. Various amplification strategies for chiral compounds to enhance a small chiral preference have been reported, but none of these involves phosphorylation, one of nature's essential chemical reactions. Here we present a simple and robust concept of phosphorylation-based chiral amplification of amines and amino acids in water. By exploiting the difference in solubility of a racemic phosphoramidate and its enantiopure form, we achieved enantioenrichment in solution. Starting with n

Multi-omics integration elucidates molecular mechanisms underlying distinctive meat quality in Liping cattle versus Angus hybrid and Simmental breeds.

Liping cattle, an indigenous Chinese breed, may possess unique meat quality characteristics, yet systematic comparisons with commercial breeds remain limited. This study systematically compared nutritional composition, amino acids, fatty acids, volatile flavor-related substances of longissimus dorsi muscle among Liping cattle (LP), Angus hybrid cattle (AG) and Simmental cattle (XM), and further adopted untargeted metabolomics and transcriptome sequencing to reveal the molecular basis for excellent meat quality of LP cattle. Nutritional detection demonstrated LP beef possessed typical advantage

Nutritional composition and action mechanism of Channa striata meat in wound healing: A systematic review.

Wound healing is a complex biological process requiring adequate nutritional support, particularly proteins, amino acids, fatty acids, and essential minerals. Snakehead fish (Channa striata) has been traditionally consumed in Southeast Asia to accelerate recovery after surgery and childbirth. Emerging evidence suggests that its nutritional composition plays a pivotal role in tissue repair. The aim of this systematic review was to consolidate evidence on the nutritional composition of C. striata and elucidate its mechanisms of action in wound healing based on preclinical and clinical studies. Antipathogenic carbon dots synthesized from fluorescent amino acids and their photodynamic activity.

Nitrogen-doped carbon dots (CDs) were prepared from essential fluorescent amino acids, such as lysine (Lys), phenylalanine (Phe), tyrosine (Tyr), and tryptophan (Trp) by two routes, microwave and teflon-lined autoclave. The fluorescent properties of these amino acids were significantly improved in their corresponding CD forms, especially for those prepared via the hydrothermal process. A significantly high fluorescent intensity was measured in the emission range of 420-470 nm at the excitation wavelengths of 300-350 nm. While a negatively zeta potential value of - 9.8 ± 2.6 mV was obtained for

Impact of Amino Acid Excipients on icIEF Method Development in Protein Therapeutics: A Formulation-Aware Analytical Framework.

Accurate assessment of charge heterogeneity and isoelectric point (pI) is essential for ensuring the quality, stability, and safety of biotherapeutics throughout development and commercialization. Imaged capillary isoelectric focusing (icIEF) is the industry‑standard technique for this purpose, using a stable, linear pH gradient to accurately localize analyte peaks relative to calibrant pI markers. Although amino acids are widely used as formulation excipients for physicochemical stabilization, their potential to interfere with icIEF analyses has not been systematically evaluated. In this stud
