Rare but relevant: Methamphetamine and Parkinson's disease.

Evidence from a number of paradigms suggests that methamphetamine use is associated with increased risk for the development of Parkinson's disease and parkinsonism, and that it may be associated with the premature development of Parkinson's disease. Prevalence of Parkinson's disease and parkinsonism is greater in both methamphetamine users and people who previously used methamphetamine, and evidence from animal studies provides a plausible mechanism for this observation. Despite this increased risk, Parkinson's disease is rarely diagnosed in methamphetamine users. Reasons for this may include

Alterations in the brain functional network of abstinent male individuals with methamphetamine use disorder.

Methamphetamine is a highly addictive psychostimulant drug that is abused globally and is a serious threat to health worldwide. Unfortunately, the specific mechanism underlying addiction remains unclear. Thus, this study aimed to investigate the characteristics of functional connectivity in the brain network and the factors influencing methamphetamine use disorder in patients using magnetic resonance imaging. We included 96 abstinent male participants with methamphetamine use disorder and 46 age- and sex-matched healthy controls for magnetic resonance imaging. Compared with healthy controls, p

Wastewater profiling of illicit drugs, an estimation of community consumption: A case study of eThekwini Metropolitan Municipality, South Africa.

Estimation of community-wide consumption of illicit drugs through wastewater analysis is a new concept in Africa although widely applied in developed nations as wastewater-based epidemiology (WBE). It is an important tool that can be used in understanding supply and demand patterns of illicit drug use on a local, national, and international scale. Information on illicit drug use is currently limited in Africa, because of a lack of monitoring structures by governments and financial constraints. This study hopes to bridge that gap by contributing to Africa's baseline information on illicit drug

Are Histamine H3 Antagonists the Definitive Treatment for Acute Methamphetamine Intoxication?

BACKGROUND: Methamphetamine (METH) is classified as a Schedule II stimulant drug under the United Nations Convention on Psychotropic Substances of 1971. METH and other amphetamine analogues (AMPHs) are powerful addictive drugs. Treatments are needed to treat the symptoms of METH addiction, chronic METH use, and acute METH overdose. No effective treatment for METH abuse has been established because alterations of brain functions under the excessive intake of abused drug intake are largely irreversible due in part to brain damage that occurs in the course of chronic METH use. OBJECTIVE: Modulat

Major and trace elements changes of female methamphetamine addicts during six months' compulsory treatment: Biomarkers discovery.

BACKGROUND: The concentration levels of major and trace elements are significantly correlated with human health. However, studies profiling major and trace elements among female using methamphetamine are rare. This study aims to investigate the major and trace elements changes and discover elemental biomarkers in plasma of female methamphetamine (METH) addicts in six months' compulsory treatment. METHODS: A total of 60 female METH addicts selected from drug rehabilitation center were randomly divided into three equal groups: (1) Detoxification for one month; (2) Detoxification for three month

Pharmacotherapeutic agents in the treatment of methamphetamine dependence.

Methamphetamine use is a serious public health concern in many countries and is second to cannabis as the most widely abused illicit drug in the world. Effective management for methamphetamine dependence remains elusive and the large majority of methamphetamine users relapse following treatment. Areas covered: Progression in the understanding of the pharmacological basis of methamphetamine use has provided us with innovative opportunities to develop agents to treat dependence. The current review summarizes relevant literature on the neurobiological and clinical correlates associated with metha

Negative moods correlate with craving in female methamphetamine users enrolled in compulsory detoxification.

BACKGROUND: Methamphetamine (METH) use, especially in females, has become a growing public health concern in China. In this study, we aimed to characterize the factors that contributed to drug craving in female METH users under isolated compulsory detoxification. We characterized factors contributing to craving such as duration of detoxification, history of drug use and self-reported mood state. METHODS: Subjects (N=113) undergoing a 1- to 3-year METH detoxification program were recruited from the Zhejiang Compulsory Detoxification Center for Women. The Questionnaire of METH-use Urge (QMU) wa

Quite a lot of smoke but very limited fire--the use of methamphetamine in Europe.

INTRODUCTION AND AIMS: This paper provides an overview of the historical development, current situation and potential future diffusion of methamphetamine (MA) use in Europe. DESIGN AND METHODS: The analysis is based on a review of published and grey literature, as well as data collected as part of the ongoing monitoring of the drug situation in Europe. Some qualitative surveys among high-risk populations do exist, but overall the general low prevalence of methamphetamine use in most of Europe means that the data available to explore patterns of use are limited. RESULTS: In many parts of Euro

[Fatal cerebral hemorrhage in young amphetamine addicts].

Abuse of amphetamine, cocaine and related compounds has become an important risk factor for intracerebral haemorrhage in young adults. Five fatal cases of intracerebral haemorrhage following use of amphetamine are described. The symptoms occurred few hours after amphetamine intake, and all patients had considerably increased blood pressure upon admission. Autopsy was performed on four of the patients and did not reveal any predisposing factors for haemorrhage, such as trauma, vascular malformations or vasculitis. Cerebral CT should always be performed when severe headache and/or altered consci

Clinical implications of behavioral pharmacology research on phencyclidine.

This discussion has highlighted only some of the areas of behavioral pharmacology research with PCP, focusing largely on studies in our laboratories. Some of the areas touched upon lightly have been much more extensively investigated (e.g., PCP-like properties of psychotomimetic opioids). Some areas, such as the search for a PCP antagonist, have been studied with relatively little success so far. Two other areas, among many that are worthy of mention, are the extensive series of studies of the effects of PCP on complex learning procedures, starting with the studies by Moerschbaecher and Thomps

Toxicology test-ordering patterns in a large urban general hospital during five years: an update.

Analytical data from the clinical toxicology laboratory of a large urban hospital, the Los Angeles County--University of Southern California Medical Center, are reported for the year 1976 and are compared to similar data previously documented for the year 1972. Drugs assayed, number of tests requested, and number of positive results are collated. Data on 58 assays show that the overwhelming majority of the requests continue to be for those tests that were originally classified as tests with 4-h turn-around time in the patient-focused concept for a clinical toxicology service in 1972. Total wor

Sex differences in shoplifting: results from a national sample.

This study presents the sex differences in sociodemographics and in psychiatric correlates of shoplifting in the United States. Data were drawn from the National Epidemiologic Survey on Alcohol and Related Conditions, a nationally representative sample of US adults. Shoplifting was associated with numerous psychiatric and addictive disorders with significant sex effects. Women with a lifetime history of shoplifting were significantly more likely than men with a lifetime history of shoplifting to have a lifetime diagnosis of alcohol abuse or dependence, nicotine dependence, cannabis, amphetamin
