A review of the clinical anatomy of hypertension.

Hypertension is defined as the persistent elevation of blood pressure above normal limits. It can be classified according to whether the contributing factors are genetics and environmental (primary hypertension) or underlying medical conditions and medications (secondary hypertension). The goal of this review is to increase recognition of the various anatomical etiologies of hypertension. Clin. Anat. 32:678-681, 2019. © 2019 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

Anatomy and Biomechanics of Cavovarus Deformity.

A high longitudinal plantar arch, varus position of the heel, forefoot equinus, and pronation of the first ray are characteristic of a cavovarus deformity. Forefoot-driven and hindfoot-driven deformities are distinguished based on pathomechanics. In first ray strong plantarflexion, the forefoot touches the ground first. This leads to compensatory varus heel, lock of the midfoot, reduction of the flexible phase, and decrease in shock absorption. In hindfoot-driven cavovarus deformity, the subtalar joint may compensate for varus deformities above the ankle joint. Overload of the lateral soft tis

Active inference and the anatomy of oculomotion.

Given that eye movement control can be framed as an inferential process, how are the requisite forces generated to produce anticipated or de … movements. Crucially, the associated message passing maps well onto the known connectivity and neuroanatomy of the brainstem - and the changes in these messages over time are strikingly similar to single unit recordings of neurons in the corresponding nuclei. Furthermore, we show that simulated lesions to axonal pathways reproduce eye movement patterns of …

Anatomy and techniques in posterior urethroplasty.

Given its complex anatomy, injury to the posterior urethra may result in a number of reconstructive challenges. With the appropriate operative planning and experience, surgical repair can be very successful. This review discusses the applicable techniques for the perineal approach to posterior urethral stenosis, including bulbomembranous anastomosis for pelvic fracture urethral injury and repair of vesicourethral anastomotic stenosis (VUAS) following prostate surgery. The advanced techniques reviewed include an adaptation allowing a bulbar artery sparing approach to posterior urethroplasty and…

The deep lymphatic anatomy of the hand.

BACKGROUND: The deep lymphatic anatomy of the hand still remains the least described in medical literature. METHODS: Eight hands were harvested from four nonembalmed human cadavers amputated above the wrist. A small amount of 6% hydrogen peroxide was employed to detect the lymphatic vessels around the superficial and deep palmar vascular arches, in webs from the index to little fingers, the thenar and hypothenar areas. A 30-gauge needle was inserted into the vessels and injected with a barium sulphate compound. Each specimen was dissected, photographed and radiographed to demonstrate deep lym…

The clinical anatomy of dyspareunia: A review.

Dyspareunia can be described as continuous unremitting or intermittent pain associated with intercourse. It can be classified based on the location of the pain - entry or deep dyspareunia, or based on when the pain was first experienced - primary or secondary dyspareunia. There are different causes of dyspareunia and some of the most important causes include the following: vulvodynia, postpartum dyspareunia, endometriosis, inadequate vaginal lubrication or arousal, and other anogenital causes such as hemorrhoids and anal fissures. In this review, our objective is to apply the anatomical knowle

The Clinical Anatomy of Endometriosis: A Review.

Endometriosis is a gynecological disorder identified by the presence of ectopic endometrial tissue outside the uterus. Largely, it affects reproductive-aged women and is a major cause of infertility. Clinical manifestations of endometriosis include dyspareunia, cyclic menstrual pain, chronic pelvic pain, and dyschezia, all of which can affect the patient's quality of life and health severely; therefore, it is paramount that medical treatment is initiated as soon as endometriosis is suspected clinically. In this review, we examine the known anatomic principles of endometriosis in the literature

Functional Vascular Anatomy of the Brain.

Functional vascular anatomy is the study of anatomy in its relation to the function that figures out the normal and pathological vascularization of the brain and spinal cord. The mechanism of anatomical variations (e.g. fenestration of the basilar artery, persistent primitive trigeminal artery, and aberrant subclavian artery) can be explained according to the embryological development of the cardiovascular system. The most developmental process is common among the species of the vertebrates from the fish to the mammalian in the early phase of embryo. Thus, it is possible to deduce the reasons …

Clinical Anatomy and Assessment of the Elbow.

BACKGROUND: The elbow is a complex synovial hinge joint comprising of three articulations. Satisfactory function and stability are provided by bony and soft tissue stabilising structures. Injuries around the elbow joint are common. METHODS: A literature search was performed and the authors' personal experiences reported. RESULTS: The article discusses the osseous and ligamentous anatomy around the elbow joint and their relevance when assessing and managing elbow injuries. CONCLUSION: Knowledge of the intricate anatomy around the elbow joint is essential to successfully assessing and managin…

[Anatomy and physiology of the nasolacrimal ducts].

Ophthalmologists and interventional radiologists are not the only professionals for whom diseases of the efferent tear duct system occupy centre stage; this applies also to ENT specialists involving endonasal conservative or surgical treatment. On the basis of current knowledge and taking account of results yielded by own research in recent years and of clinical aspects, we here give an overview of basic knowledge on the anatomy and physiology of the nasolacrimal system. In doing so functional aspects regarding tear transport as well as embryological and pathophysiological issues are integrate…

Anatomy and histology of the frontalis muscle.

PURPOSE: To determine the gross and histologic configurations of the medial and lateral frontalis muscle. METHODS: After making a midcoronal incision and bluntly dissecting to the orbital rim, the frontalis muscle was marked and measured. A protractor was used to measure the frontalis-orbicularis angle (FOA) and, when present, the angle of central bifurcation (AOB). Three strips of full-thickness forehead soft tissue measuring 0.5 cm × 8 cm were excised 3, 4.5, and 6 cm above the supraorbital notch and analyzed histologically for the presence of skeletal muscle fibers. Data were analyzed usin

Functional Anatomy of the Outflow Facilities.

In order to understand the pathophysiology, select optimal therapeutic options for patients and provide clients with honest expectations for cases of canine glaucoma, clinicians should be familiar with a rational understanding of the functional anatomy of the ocular structures involved in this group of diseases. The topographical extension and the structural and humoral complexity of the regions involved with the production and the outflow of aqueous humor undergo numerous changes with aging and disease. Therefore, the anatomy relative to the fluid dynamics of aqueous has become a pivotal yet …

Clinical anatomy of the G-spot.

The existence of the G-Spot has never been unequivocally confirmed. With increased public exposure and a trend towards sexual gratification, however, the impetus to elucidate this structure is greater than ever. This review will focus on research that has been conducted on the clinical anatomy of the G-Spot. Ultimately this review will show that while the distal area of the anterior vaginal wall appears to be the most sensitive region of the vagina, the existence of an anatomical "G-spot" remains to be demonstrated.

Topographic anatomy of the ulnar tunnel.

PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to clarify the definition of the anterior wall of the ulnar tunnel and to reveal the topographical characteristics of the various components of the ulnar tunnel. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Twenty-two forearms from 11 embalmed cadavers (7 males, 4 females; mean age, 67.8 years) were carefully dissected. RESULTS: In all cases, the anterior wall of the ulnar tunnel comprised the hypothenar fascia, which originated from the tendon of the flexor carpi ulnaris muscle. The palmar carpal ligament, the distal extent of the antebrachial fascia, was located deep to the an
