Who is repeating anatomy? Trends in an undergraduate anatomy course.

Anatomy courses frequently serve as prerequisites or requirements for health sciences programs. Due to the challenging nature of anatomy, each semester there are students remediating the course (enrolled in the course for a second time), attempting to earn a grade competitive for admissions into a program of study. In this retrospective study, remediation rates and trends in an undergraduate anatomy course with over 400 students enrolled each semester at a large Midwestern university were identified. Demographic data was collected from spring 2004 to spring 2010, including students' age, ethni

Branching patterns of the adrenal arteries in the degu (Octodon degus).

The degu has drawn increasing attention for use as an experimental animal in stress response studies due to its physiological features, such as diurnality and seasonal breeding, which differ from conventional laboratory rodents. Stress response is elicited by steroid hormones secreted by the adrenal gland, whose functions are controlled by pituitary hormones reaching through the adrenal arteries. However, knowledge of the arterial anatomy of the degu adrenal gland remains insufficient. To address this issue, we observed adrenal arteries in 20 male degus injected with red-colored latex. Adrenal

Anatomic characterisation of the parietal branches arising from the internal iliac artery in the foetal pig (Sus scrofa domestica).

BACKGROUND: It is critical for surgeons to have a full understanding of the complex courses and ramifications of the human internal iliac artery and its parietal branches. Although numerous anatomical studies have been performed, not all variations at this site are currently understood. Therefore, we characterised these blood vessels in foetal pigs to provide additional insight from a comparative anatomical perspective. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Eighteen half-pelvis specimens from foetal pigs were dissected and examined on macroscopic scale. RESULTS: Among our findings, we identified the intern

Is it painful to be different? Sciatic nerve anatomical variants on MRI and their relationship to piriformis syndrome.

OBJECTIVES: To investigate the purported relationship between sciatic nerve variant anatomy and piriformis syndrome. METHODS: Over 49 months, 1039 consecutive noncontrast adult hip MRIs were completed for various clinical indications. Repeat and technically insufficient studies were excluded. Radiologists categorized sciatic nerve anatomy into Beaton and Anson anatomical types. Chart review using our institution's cohort search and navigation tool determined the prevalence of the explicit clinical diagnosis of piriformis syndrome (primary endpoint) and sciatica and buttock pain (secondary end

Facilitating surgeon understanding of complex anatomy using a three-dimensional printed model.

BACKGROUND: 3-dimensional prints (3DP) anecdotally facilitate surgeon understanding of anatomy and decision-making. However, the actual benefit to surgeons or patients has not been quantified. This study investigates how surgeon understanding of complex anatomy is altered by a 3DP compared to computed tomography (CT) scan or CT + digital reconstruction (CT + DR). MATERIALS AND METHODS: Key anatomic features were segmented from a CT-abdomen/pelvis of pygopagus twins to build a DR and printed in color on a 3D printer. Pediatric surgery trainees and attendings (n = 21) were tested regarding anat

Prespecialist perceptions of three-dimensional heart models in anatomical education.

PURPOSE: This article aims to discuss the use of three-dimensional (3D) printed models of vascular variation cases as an educational tool for undergraduate and postgraduate anatomy students. METHODS: This advanced study involved ten anatomy assistants who were provided with five distinct cases of congenital cardiovascular variations, each accompanied by a computed tomography angiography (CT-A) and 1:1 solid model format. The residents were asked to generate perceptions for both formats and then compare these perceptions based on identifying the variation, defining the structural features, and

The circadian clock network in the brain of different Drosophila species.

Comparative studies on cellular and molecular clock mechanisms have revealed striking similarities in the organization of the clocks among different animal groups. To gain evolutionary insight into the properties of the clock network within the Drosophila genus, we analyzed sequence identities and similarities of clock protein homologues and immunostained brains of 10 different Drosophila species using antibodies against vrille (VRI), PAR-protein domain1 (PDP1), and cryptochrome (CRY). We found that the clock network of both subgenera Sophophora and Drosophila consists of all lateral and dorsa

Cranial osteology of Neotropical squamate reptiles of the genus Riama (Gymnophthalmidae: Cercosaurinae).

Cranial bones of squamate reptiles diverge in shape and structure across lineages, while preserving the basic skull plan. Therefore, variation in cranial morphology of squamates is key to understanding phylogenetic relationships, species delimitation, and lifestyles, which ultimately contribute to insights into their evolution and ecology. Nevertheless, although Gymnophthalmidae is the most diverse endemic non-ophidian squamate family in the Neotropics, studies on comparative cranial osteology within this lineage remain scarce. Herein, we thoroughly describe and compare the external skull anat

Triceps surae muscle injuries-a clinical challenge more complex than you think.

INTRODUCTION: Calf muscle injuries are common in running and sprint-based sports, but remain too often grouped under a single label despite important differences between gastrocnemius, soleus and, less commonly, plantaris-related injuries. This review evaluates current evidence on anatomy, diagnosis, imaging, classification, prognosis, return to play, and recurrence. SOURCES OF DATA: A structured narrative review was undertaken using PubMed/MEDLINE and Scopus, with searches updated to 23 February 2026. After deduplication and screening, 82 articles were included, including eight seminal pre-w

Pilot Study: Endoscopic Anatomical Study of the Lower Premasseter Space and Buccal Space for Sub-superficial Musculo-aponeurotic System Face Lift: Observations Based on Live Dissections.

BACKGROUND: Sub-superficial musculo-aponeurotic system dissections of the lower premasseteric space (LPMS) and buccal space (BS) performed under direct visualization are challenging because of the close relationship between neurovascular bundles and the fascioligamentous system, making these structures prone to injury. This pilot study aims to document the endoscopic anatomy of these spaces through intraoperative visualization, enabling clearer identification and description of key structures. METHODS: Five representative cases were selected from a series of 80 sub-superficial musculo-aponeur

Technical Evolution, Clinical Application, and Outcomes of Endoscopic Transpapillary Gallbladder Drainage in Acute Cholecystitis: A Review.

Background: Acute cholecystitis (AC) is a common inflammatory disease of the gallbladder. Although laparoscopic cholecystectomy remains the standard treatment, gallbladder drainage may be required in patients who are unsuitable for early surgery. Endoscopic transpapillary gallbladder drainage (ETGBD), including endoscopic nasogallbladder drainage (ENGBD) and endoscopic gallbladder stenting (EGBS), has increasingly been used as a minimally invasive internal drainage approach. Aims: This review aims to clarify the role of ETGBD in AC by integrating stepwise technical failure analysis with a prac

Surgical and oncological implications of the presence of hepatic artery anatomical variations in patients undergoing pancreaticoduodenectomy: a single center experience.

The presence of an aberrant right hepatic artery (a-RHA) could influence the oncological and postoperative outcomes after pancreaticoduodenectomy (PD). A comparative study was conducted, including patients who underwent PD with a-RHA or with normal RHA anatomy. The primary endpoints were R1 resection in all margins (pancreatic, anterior, posterior, superior mesenteric artery, and portal groove), overall survival (OS), and disease-free survival (DFS). The secondary endpoints were morbidity, mortality, biliary leak (BL), postoperative pancreatic fistula (POPF), delayed gastric emptying (DGE), po

Left ventricular rigor mortis interferes with postmortem aortic root geometry.

Aortic regurgitation is a common valve disease and can be caused by delineated findings such as fenestrations or hardly discernible alterations of the aortic root geometry. Therefore, aortic regurgitation can be a challenging diagnosis during an autopsy. Cardiac surgeons, however, are confronted with comparable problems during surgery and have developed a refined knowledge of the anatomy of the aortic root including its geometry. Transferring this knowledge from the operating room to the dissection would further complement the panel of postmortem diagnostic tools. To foster translation of the

AN ANATOMICAL STUDY OF THE THORACIC LIMB OF THE GIANT ANTEATER (MYRMECOPHAGA TRIDACTYLA) COMPARED WITH THE DOMESTIC DOG TO GUIDE SURGICAL APPROACHES TO THE HUMERUS AND RADIUS.

The giant anteater (Myrmecophaga tridactyla) is a neotropical mammal considered to be vulnerable to extinction. Recent increased interest in veterinary care in the giant anteater has prompted renewed interest in anatomical descriptions in this species. The terrestrial habits and slow movements of the giant anteater contribute to its susceptibility to vehicular trauma on highways, which is a significant cause of mortality in the species. This study describes the muscular anatomy of the thoracic limb and variations of the long bones with emphasis on the structures surrounding the humerus and rad

Bladder exstrophy-epispadias-cloacal exstrophy complex: characteristics, aetiologies, and epidemiologic findings.

Bladder exstrophy-epispadias-cloacal exstrophy complex (BEEC) is a spectrum of congenital urologic anomalies that involve the bladder, urethra, genitalia, and pelvic musculoskeletal system, and can affect urinary continence, sexual health, and fertility. BEEC includes a wide spectrum of anatomical abnormalities with different levels of severity: epispadias represents the mildest phenotype, classic bladder exstrophy (CBE) is the most common defect, and cloacal exstrophy (CE) - often referred to as omphalocele, exstrophy, imperforate anus, and spinal defects (OEIS) complex - is the most severe f

Anatomical variations of cystic artery, cystic duct, and gall bladder and their associated intraoperative and postoperative complications: an observational study.

UNLABELLED: Anatomical variations in the calots triangle encountered during laparoscopic cholecystectomy are not uncommon. Misidentification and misperception of these structures are the major cause of vasculobiliary injuries. This study was conducted to estimate the prevalence of anatomical variations of the cystic artery, cystic duct (CD), and gall bladder. This is the first study in India to access the rate of intraoperative and postoperative complications in anatomical variants compared to normal individuals. PATIENTS AND METHODS: It was a prospective observational study on patients under
