Commonly Used Over the Counter Therapies for Hair Growth in Skin of Color: An Evidenced-Based Review.

BACKGROUND: Given the immense psychosocial effects of hair loss as well as patient preference for treatment type, it is common for patients to turn to alternative medicine to improve their conditions. However, the commonly used alternative treatments can vary greatly between patients and particularly among skin of color populations. OBJECTIVE: In this work, we performed a scoping review of the evidence behind alternative topical treatments for hair loss used by skin of color patients. Methods & Materials: We conducted a comprehensive search using PubMed to identify relevant studies. RESU

Food-technology innovations in alternative proteins.

The increasing demand for sustainable, nutritious, and ethically produced foods has driven considerable interest in the development of alternative proteins. This chapter reviews the food-technology innovations involved in the formulation, processing and application of alternative protein foods. It contains functional ingredients used in alternative protein systems and their technological roles in developing structure, texture, and stability. The major processing technologies are then examined, with particular emphasis on protein denaturation and thermomechanical processing, especially high-moi

Soy Protein Nanofiber Scaffolds for Uniform Maturation of Human Induced Pluripotent Stem Cell-Derived Retinal Pigment Epithelium.

Retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) differentiated from human induced pluripotent stem cells, called induced retinal pigment epithelium (iRPE), is being explored as a cell-based therapy for the treatment of retinal degenerative diseases, especially age-related macular degeneration. The success of RPE implantation is linked to the use of biomimetic scaffolds that simulate Bruch's membrane and promote RPE maturation and integration as a functional tissue. Due to difficulties associated with animal protein-derived scaffolds, including sterility and pro-inflammatory responses, current practices favor

Candidate antigens for serological testing (ELISA) and diagnosis of canine visceral leishmaniasis.

The diagnosis of canine visceral leishmaniasis (CVL) relies on parasitological, molecular methods and serological. However, there are difficulties in using these methods to monitor the disease, and there is a need for more efficient diagnostic alternatives for dogs with suspected visceral leishmaniasis, also using clinical aspects of the animals, which that can be useful for surveillance and control. This study aimed to evaluate the serological diagnostic potential of recombinant antigens in order to improve CVL diagnosis. Disease diagnosis, clinical evaluation, and collection of biological sa

Immunobiotics for the Bovine Host: Their Interaction with Intestinal Epithelial Cells and Their Effect on Antiviral Immunity.

The scientific community has reported several cases of microbes that exhibit elevated rates of antibiotic resistance in different regions of the planet. Due to this emergence of antimicrobial resistant microorganisms, the use of antibiotics as promoters of livestock animals' growth is being banned in most countries around the world. One of the challenges of agricultural immunology therefore is to find alternatives by modulating the immune system of animals in drug-independent safe food production systems. In this regard, in an effort to supplant antibiotics from bovine feeds, several alternati

Unilateral implantation of dopamine-loaded biodegradable hydrogel in the striatum attenuates motor abnormalities in the 6-hydroxydopamine model of hemi-parkinsonism.

Dopaminergic functional recovery following controlled release of dopamine from biodegradable polymer matrices implanted in the lesioned striatum was investigated in a hemiparkinsonian animal model. Significant dopamine depletion in the striatum ipsilateral to the side of infusion was observed in animals unilaterally infused with 6-hydroxydopamine (6-OHDA) in the substatia nigra. These animals displayed apomorphine-induced contralateral rotational behavior, when examined on the 16th day. Implantation of a controlled release delivery system (hydrogel obtained by mixing dextran dialdehyde cross-l

In vitro bioassays used in evaluating plant extracts for tick repellent and acaricidal properties: A critical review.

Ticks are haematophagous arthropods which rank closely with mosquitoes in their capacity to transmit disease pathogens of importance to animals and humans. Current control of ticks is based on the routine use of synthetic chemicals administered to animals or their environment. However, years of use and overuse of these chemicals have resulted in the development of resistance in these parasites and negative environmental impacts, hence the need for cheaper, safer and more environmentally friendly alternatives with alternate modes of action. There has been a large interest in using plants for th

Decoding Medial Entorhinal Cortical Dynamics Produces Planning-Like Alternations in Hippocampal theta Sequences.

The hippocampus is central to memory and spatial planning. A prominent candidate mechanism supporting navigational decision making is hippocampal theta sequences-brief (~120 ms) place-cell sequences representing future trajectories-which have been interpreted as planning signals based on their alternation between maze arms in T-maze tasks. However, recent work suggests that intrinsic left-right alternation in medial entorhinal cortex (MEC) theta sequences may underlie this phenomenon. Here, we test this hypothesis using a model of MEC theta dynamics in a T-maze and show that standard Bayesian

Host Immunization with Recombinant Tick Antigen and Evaluation of Host Immune Response.

Ticks are classified as hematophagous arthropods and transfer a variety of pathogens-such as viruses, bacteria, and protozoans-to vertebrate hosts during blood feeding. These transmitted pathogens cause infectious diseases that continue to affect both humans and animals worldwide. Chemical acaricides are commonly used for tick control to prevent infectious diseases. However, the continuous use of acaricides leads to the emergence of acaricide-resistant tick species; thus, alternative methods for tick control are necessary. Vaccination of vertebrate hosts with tick-derived molecules is consider

Quantitative myocardial first-pass perfusion imaging of CO2 -induced vasodilation in rats.

Inducible hypercapnia is an alternative for increasing the coronary blood flow necessary to facilitate the quantification of myocardial blood flow during hyperemia. The current study aimed to quantify the pharmacokinetic effect of a CO2 gas challenge on myocardial perfusion in rats using high-resolution, first-pass perfusion CMR and compared it with pharmacologically induced hyperemia using regadenoson. A dual-contrast, saturation-recovery, gradient-echo sequence with a Cartesian readout was used on a small-animal 9.4-T scanner; additional cine images during hyperemia/rest were recorded with a

Yellow Fever Virus Production in Bioreactor.

On a commercial scale, the vaccine against yellow fever is based on replication of the attenuated virus in embryonated eggs [2]. A very promising alternative platform to the production of the virus in eggs, which has spread as a worldwide trend, is production using mammalian cell lines. The advantage of using established animal cell lines in vaccine production lies in their greater reproducibility and convenience when compared to primary cells and animal models, as well as their great potential for large-scale production. Such cell lines can be cultivated in bioreactors, under monitored and co

Comparison of sodium azide- and cooling-based immobilization methods for Caenorhabditis elegans chemotaxis assays.

Chemotaxis assays are widely used to quantify sensory-driven behavioral responses in Caenorhabditis elegans . Sodium azide is commonly used to immobilize animals at assay endpoints, although concerns have been raised that diffusion beyond the endpoint region could affect behavior before a choice is completed. We compared sodium azide-mediated immobilization with post-assay cooling using the repellent 1-octanol and attractant diacetyl. Wild-type animals showed robust avoidance of 30% 1-octanol and attraction to 0.5% diacetyl with either method, across multiple assay durations, and with or witho

Experimental models of polycystic ovary syndrome: An update.

Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is one of the major endocrine disorders in women. PCOS is a disorder with alterations in the structure as well as functions of female reproductive organs and is also associated with metabolic disorders. Studies on humans have limitations due to ethical issues, hence animal models are used to understand the different aspects of PCOS. Animal models of PCOS aids in studying various facts beginning from etiology to the treatment, hence, several animal models have been developed. Despite of the establishment of several models and a number of studies on PCOS, lacunae

A Noninvasive Ocular (Tear) Sampling Method for Genetic Ascertainment of Transgenic Mice and Research Ethics Innovation.

Animal models, animal welfare and research ethics are both facilitators and gatekeepers for Big Data generation in genomics and multi-omics R&D. Safeguarding animal welfare is also a research ethics issue that can benefit from technical innovations in biosample collection in particular. Animal welfare draws from the guiding principles of 3R, namely, "Replacement" (methods avoiding the use of animals in research), "Reduction" (methods using fewer animals or derive more information from the same number of animals), and "Refinement" (methods removing or minimizing pain or distress). We report her

Carcass and commercial cuts yields of caiman (Caiman crocodilus yacare) farmed in a ranching system in the Brazilian Pantanal.

Given the growing use of alternative sources of protein, studies on the commercial viability of amazonians wild species, based on the yield of their carcass, are still scarce in the literature. To evaluate yields of carcass and commercial cuts of caiman meat (Caiman crocodilus yacare), according to sex and weight categories, besides analyzing their revenue. Thirty animals in termination phase were selected, separated by sex and weighed. The cuts analyzed was of 59.7% in relation to total live weight, and of 70.7% in relation to the carcass. Regarding the yields of the cuts, the average weight

Modeling and simulation in dose determination for biodefense products approved under the FDA animal rule.

Development of effective medical countermeasures for biodefense is vital to United States biopreparedness and response in the age of terrorism, both foreign and domestic. A traditional drug development pathway toward approval is not possible for most biodefense-related indications, creating the need for alternative development pathways such as the FDA's Animal Rule. Under this unique regulatory mechanism, FDA-approval is based on adequate and well-controlled animal studies when it is neither ethical nor feasible to conduct human efficacy studies. Translation of animal efficacy findings to huma

BREEDING AND GENETICS SYMPOSIUM: Breeding for resilience to heat stress effects in dairy ruminants. A comprehensive review.

Selection for heat tolerant (HT) animals in dairy production has been so far linked to estimation of declines in production using milk recording and meteorological information on the day of control using reaction norms. Results from these models show that there is a reasonable amount of genetic variability in the individual response to high heat loads, which makes feasible selection of HT animals at low costs. However, the antagonistic relationship between level of production and response to heat stress (HS) implies that selection for HT animals under this approach must be done with caution so

Transcranial Photobiomodulation Attenuates Neurogenic Inflammation and Sensory Hypersensitivity in a Nitroglycerin-Induced Migraine Model: Toward a Nonpharmacological Therapy.

BACKGROUND: Migraine is a debilitating neurological condition, characterized by headache, photophobia, and heightened mechanical/thermal sensitivity. Current pharmacological therapies often lead to incomplete relief and adverse effects, necessitating the use of noninvasive alternatives. This study evaluated transcranial photobiomodulation (PBM) in a nitroglycerin (NTG)-induced migraine model in male mice. METHODS: Mice were assigned to Sham, NTG, NTG + Sumatriptan (SUMA; 600 µg/kg, s.c.), NTG + PBM, and NTG + PBM + SUMA groups. Over 9 days, NTG (5 mg/kg) was injected intraperitoneally every o
