Prospective ultrasonographic phenotyping and infectious polymerase chain reaction screening of canine hepatobiliary disease in southern Vietnam.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Canine hepatobiliary disorders are frequently encountered in small animal practice; however, prospective clinic-based studies integrating ultrasonographic phenotyping with infectious molecular screening remain limited in tropical Southeast Asia. This study aimed to determine the frequency of ultrasonographically detected hepatobiliary abnormalities, identify associated host factors, characterize ultrasonographic phenotypes, and assess infectious etiologies in dogs with suspected hepatobiliary disease in southern Vietnam. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A prospective observational s

Intestinal Surgery in Rabbits.

Advances in rabbit intestinal physiology and diagnostic imaging have clarified surgical indications and improved safety with modern anesthesia and critical care. This review focuses on mechanical obstructions, appendiceal disorders, and intestinal biopsies. Intestinal obstruction remains a common rabbit emergency; most trichobezoars pass spontaneously, but some require intervention. Proximal duodenal obstructions typically need surgery, while jejunal or ileal blockages may be managed medically with aggressive fluids, intravenous lidocaine, and analgesia. When surgery is necessary, decompress,

Surgical Management of Ear Diseases in Rabbits.

Otitis is a relatively common condition in pet rabbits and may affect one or several parts of the ear: the external ear canal, the middle ear, and the inner ear. A higher incidence is observed in lop-eared rabbits, likely related to the anatomy of their external ear canals. In many cases, medical management alone rarely leads to complete resolution. The anatomic and physiologic differences of the rabbit ear require species-specific considerations. A precise understanding of the anatomy of the external and middle ear is therefore essential for accurate diagnosis and appropriate therapeutic plan

Trauma-Associated Dental Displacement, Dental Disease, and Malocclusion in a Young Giant Panda (A melanoleuca).

Giant pandas in the wild and captivity have been shown to suffer from dental disease. In this article, we describe a clinical case which developed a facial swelling secondary to dental disease as a result of trauma to the young panda about 5 years previously. The lesion responded to antibiotic therapy but recurred as soon as the antibiotic course ended. Computed tomography showed the extent of dental disease, which also affected other teeth, and enabled surgical planning and confirmation that the teeth and roots were completely extracted. Computed tomography is the essential diagnostic imaging

Diet and Dental Disease in Exotic Companion Mammals.

Diet is essential for dental health, yet diets chosen by humans for pets often do not conform to state-of-the-art recommendations. For many animals, non-natural diets high in easily digestible carbohydrates from cultivated fruit, colored vegetables, cereals/grains and derived products including cereal-based compound feeds, represent risk factors for reduced chewing activity, oral dysbiosis, caries and periodontitis; if not supplemented, also disturbances of the calcium/phosphorus metabolism. In rabbits and rodents, with teeth that have the permanent capacity for controlled compensatory regrowt

Medical Management of Reproduction in Birds.

Reproductive diseases are common medical problems of birds including dystocia, oviductal and ovarian disease, testicular tumors, as well as hormonally linked behavioral disorders such as feather destruction, self-trauma, aggression, or masturbation. The hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal axis endogenously controls reproduction, although there are numerous exogenous factors (eg, presence of a mate, photoperiod, rainfall) that have a substantial influence on reproductive activity. Surgical intervention in female birds by means of salpingohysterectomy (oviduct removal) presents significant surgical a

Adrenal Disease in Small Mammals.

Adrenal gland disease has been described as a rare disease in pet rabbits and rodents. Hyperadrenocorticism with excessive secretion of corticosteroids is most commonly observed in guinea pigs and hamsters, with dermatologic signs similar to those seen in dogs. Diagnosis is based on clinical signs, diagnostic imaging such as abdominal ultrasound, and determination of the blood hormone concentrations. In guinea pigs, an adrenocorticotrophic hormone stimulation test with the measurement of salivary cortisol or corticosterone concentrations is recommended. The recommended treatment of adrenal dis

Hypothalamic and Pituitary Physiology in Birds and Reptiles.

Across all vertebrates, the anatomy of the hypothalamus and mechanisms underlying its development are highly conserved, whereas the pituitary is highly specialized structurally with considerable differences amongst classes. In birds and reptiles, the hypothalamus controls the pituitary gland through nerve impulses and the secretion of neurohormones, resulting in several hypothalamic-pituitary axes: the hypothalamic-pituitary-thyroid axis, the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis, and the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal axis. This article provides a foundational knowledge on the physiologic funct

Thyroid Disease of Fishes.

The paraphyletic group referred to as fishes represents several extant and extinct classes that demonstrate the greatest diversity and abundance of any of the vertebrates on the Earth. Anatomically and physiologically, the systems of fish are comparable to those of other vertebrates and the thyroid and hypothalamic-pituitary-thyroid (HPT) axis are no exceptions. This article reviews the current literature on thyroid endocrinology of elasmobranch and teleost fishes with an emphasis on relevance to clinical management and highlights some of the anatomic and physiologic differences of the HPT axi
