[Activity of erythrocyte membrane Na,K-ATPase in rats with experimental botulism].

The effect of type C botulinum toxin on Na, K, Mg-ATPase activities of erythrocyte membranes of white rats was studied in experiments in vivo and in vitro. The activity of Na, K, Mg-ATPase was found to be markedly inhibited in the preclinical period of poisoning, 2 hours after intraperitoneal injection of the toxin. In this case Mg-ATPase activity noticeably increased. In the presence of the development of a grave paralytic syndrome one day after intraperitoneal injection of the toxin, the activity of Na, K-ATPase of the erythrocyte membrane remained decreased as was the case in the preclinica

Strategies for safe and effective therapeutic measures for chronic arsenic and lead poisoning.

Exposure to toxic metals remains a widespread occupational and environmental problem in world. There have been a number of reports in the recent past suggesting an incidence of childhood lead poisoning and chronic arsenic poisoning due to contaminated drinking water in many areas of West Bengal in India and Bangladesh has become a national calamity. Low level metal exposure in humans is caused by air, food and water intake. Lead and arsenic generally interferes with a number of body functions such as the central nervous system (CNS), the haematopoietic system, liver and kidneys. Over the past

Dhurrin in Sorghum: Biosynthesis, Regulation, Biological Function and Challenges for Animal Production.

Sorghum (Sorghum bicolor) holds a significant position as the fifth most vital cereal crop globally. Its drought resistance and robust biomass production, coupled with commendable nutritional value, make sorghum a promising choice for animal feed. Nevertheless, the utilization of sorghum in animal production faces hurdles of dhurrin (a cyanogenic glycoside) poisoning. While dhurrin serves as a protective secondary metabolite during sorghum growth, the resulting highly toxic hydrogen cyanide poses a significant threat to animal safety. This review extensively examines the biometabolic processes

A review of anorexia induced by T-2 toxin.

The presence of anorexia in animals is the most well-known clinical symptom of T-2 toxin poisoning. T-2 toxin is the most characteristic type A toxin in the trichothecene mycotoxins. The consumption of T-2 toxin can cause anorexic response in mice, rats, rabbits, and other animals. In this review, the basic information of T-2 toxin, appetite regulation mechanism and the molecular mechanism of T-2 toxin-induced anorectic response in animals are presented and discussed. The objective of this overview is to describe the research progress of anorexia in animals produced by T-2 toxin. T-2 toxin mai

Acute hepatic necrosis associated with Trema micranthum poisoning in cattle in Brazil.

Trema micranthum (L.) Blume (Jamaican nettletree) is a hepatotoxic tree that is widely distributed throughout the Americas and has been associated with poisoning in several domestic animal species. To our knowledge, spontaneous intoxication in cattle has not been reported previously. Here, we describe 2 spontaneous outbreaks of T. micranthum poisoning in Nelore cows in the state of Mato Grosso, Brazil. Affected cattle developed apathy, ataxia, and recumbency, followed by death within hours. Autopsy revealed jaundice and enlarged livers with a diffuse mottled red-and-white appearance. Histologi

Fatal bromethalin poisoning.

Bromethalin is a neurotoxin found in some rodenticides. A delusional 21-year-old male presented to a hospital with altered mental status the day after ingesting a bromethalin-based rodenticide. He died 7 days after his self-reported exposure to c. 17 mg bromethalin (equivalent to 0.33 mg bromethalin/kg). His clinicopathologic course was characterized by altered mental status, obtundation, increased cerebrospinal fluid pressure, cerebral edema, death, and diffuse histologic vacuolization of the white matter in the central nervous system seen on microscopic examination at autopsy. The presence o

Intermittent organophosphate pesticide exposure induces hepatic injury in goats with subclinical fatty liver via immune activation and energy metabolism reprogramming.

Organophosphate pesticides are widely used in livestock production, yet their impact on the liver, particularly with repeated low-dose exposure in animals with underlying metabolic stress, remains poorly understood. We examined this using a goat model where treated animals received intermittent trichlorfon poisoning followed by antidote rescue, mimicking field conditions. Unexpectedly, our control goats turned out to have fatty liver, forcing us to reframe the study around how OP exposure worsens pre-existing liver damage. Poisoned goats showed aggravated fat accumulation, focal cell death, an

Outbreak of Oleander (Nerium oleander) Poisoning in Dairy Cattle: Clinical and Food Safety Implications.

Oleander is a spontaneous shrub widely occurring in Mediterranean regions. Poisoning is sporadically reported in livestock, mainly due to the ingestion of leaves containing toxic cardiac glycosides (primarily oleandrin). In this study, 50 lactating Fleckvieh cows were affected after being offered a diet containing dry oleander pruning wastes accidentally mixed with fodder. Clinical examination, electrocardiogram, and blood sampling were conducted. Dead animals were necropsied, and heart, liver, kidney, spleen, and intestine were submitted to histological investigation. Oleandrin detection was

Evolution of our understanding of methylmercury as a health threat.

Methylmercury (MeHg) is recognized as one of the most hazardous environmental pollutants, primarily due to endemic disasters that have occurred repeatedly. A review of the earlier literature on the Minamata outbreak shows how large-scale poisoning occurred and why it could not be prevented. With the repeated occurrences of MeHg poisoning, it gradually became clear that the fetus is much more susceptible to the toxicity of this compound than the adult. Thus, recent epidemiologic studies in several fish-eating populations have focused on the effects of in utero exposure to MeHg. Also, there have

Lack of staphylococcal enterotoxin production among strains of Staphylococcus aureus from bovine mastitis in Denmark.

Staphylococcal enterotoxins (SE’s) are a group of small exoproteins produced by some strains of Staphylococcus aureus. The SE’s, designated A to E according to their antigenic specificities, are important causes of food poisoning worldwide. Milk and dairy products are frequently associated with S. aureus enter-otoxin food poisoning, and it is supposed that infected milk from mastitic animals constitute the main source of enterotoxigenic S. aureus of animal origin (Bryon 1983, Gilmour & Harvey 1990, Bergdoll 1989). Indeed, S. aureus is the most common cause of bovine mastitis worldwide, and if

Systematic review on the use of activated charcoal for gastrointestinal decontamination following acute oral overdose.

INTRODUCTION: The use of activated charcoal in poisoning remains both a pillar of modern toxicology and a source of debate. Following the publication of the joint position statements on the use of single-dose and multiple-dose activated charcoal by the American Academy of Clinical Toxicology and the European Association of Poison Centres and Clinical Toxicologists, the routine use of activated charcoal declined. Over subsequent years, many new pharmaceuticals became available in modified or alternative-release formulations and additional data on gastric emptying time in poisoning was published

Protective effects of rutin and quercetin against diazinon-induced toxicity in Wistar Rat Liver.

Diazinon is extensively used as an insecticide or pesticide in agriculture. This insecticide can be absorbed by the human body through inhalation, oral ingestion, and skin, leading to human poisoning. The liver is the first organ affected by diazinon. The present study focused on the recovery of antioxidant biomarkers, including malondialdehyde (MDA), catalase (CAT), superoxide dismutase (SOD), and reduced glutathione (GSH), in addition to the acetylcholinesterase activity (AChE), using two flavonoids, namely rutin and quercetin, in the rat liver. The antioxidant properties of these two compou

In Vitro Detection of Biologically Active Staphylococcal Enterotoxins Type B and C1 as an Alternative to In Vivo Testing.

Staphylococcus aureus is a major bacterial pathogen that can cause clinical infections and foodborne illnesses through the production of 25 exotoxin types. The most frequently implicated toxins in food poisoning outbreaks are Staphylococcal enterotoxins type A-E (SEA-SEE), which are the first enterotoxins discovered. While in vitro detection methods are available to identify the presence of enterotoxins, they cannot distinguish between biologically active and inactive forms of the toxins. Detection of biologically active enterotoxins currently relies on in vivo testing, using the emetic respon

Technical note: Quantitative and qualitative analysis of diatom testing in methomyl poisoning case.

Diatom testing is conducted in forensic medicine primarily to support the diagnosis of drowning. In our previous study, a large number of diatoms, potentially originating from methomyl, were detected in the lungs of a cat found dead under circumstances suggestive of methomyl poisoning, but not involving drowning or submersion. In the present study, we collected human and animal cases suspected of methomyl poisoning, where the bodies showed no evidence of drowning or submersion. Diatom tests were performed both quantitatively and qualitatively on the gastric contents, lungs, liver, kidney, and

Ionophores.

Ionophores are a class of polyether antibiotics that are commonly used as anticoccidial agents and growth promotants in ruminant diets. Ionophores transport ions across lipid membranes and down concentration gradients, which results in mitochondrial destruction, reduced cellular energy production, and ultimately cell death. Cardiomyocytes are the primary target in equine patients when exposed to toxic concentrations and the clinical disease syndrome is related to myocardial damage. Animals can survive acute exposures but can have permanent heart damage that may result in acute death at future

Effects of N-Acetylcysteine on Humanin and Endostatin in Rats Exposed to Formaldehyde.

INTRODUCTION: People are constantly exposed to formaldehyde, a volatile and poisonous gas, in indoor environments. In particular, anatomists, pathologists, histologists, and those involved in embalming are exposed to higher amounts of formaldehyde continuously due to their work. This study aimed to investigate the effect of N-acetylcysteine on endostatin and humanin values in male rats exposed to experimental formaldehyde. METHODS: In the study, 28 male Spraque-Dawley rats aged 12-14 weeks (seven animals in each group: control group, formaldehyde group, N-acetylcysteine group, formaldehyde+N-

Plant cyanogenic glycosides.

The cyanogenic glycosides belong to the products of secondary metabolism, to the natural products of plants. These compounds are composed of an alpha-hydroxynitrile type aglycone and of a sugar moiety (mostly D-glucose). The distribution of the cyanogenic glycosides (CGs) in the plant kingdom is relatively wide, the number of CG-containing taxa is at least 2500, and a lot of such taxa belong to families Fabaceae, Rosaceae, Linaceae, Compositae and others. Different methods of determination are discussed (including the indirect classical photometrical and the new direct chromatographic ones). T

Mitochondrial dysfunction, cerebral metabolic crisis, and exploratory bioenergetic biomarkers in a translational swine model of acute carbon monoxide poisoning.

Carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning remains a major cause of toxicologic morbidity and mortality and is a leading cause of acute neurologic injury among poisoned patients, yet the mechanisms underlying cerebral bioenergetic dysfunction remain incompletely understood. In addition to impaired oxygen delivery through carboxyhemoglobin (COHb) formation, CO poisoning is associated with mitochondrial respiratory dysfunction and cerebral metabolic injury. We characterized systemic physiology, cerebral metabolism, mitochondrial bioenergetics, and exploratory translational biomarkers in a swine model of acu

Haemolytic crisis in sheep as a result of chronic exposure to copper.

Usually practicing veterinarians and animal keepers have to deal with inadequate supplementation of copper which causes deficiency diseases. However, instead of curing, the consequential intake of copper is likely to cause copper intoxication. Copper poisoning is observed particularly frequently, in sheep--the most sensitive domestic animal to copper toxicity. In most cases, sheep undergo chronic exposure to copper causing liver necrosis and resulting in massive haemolysis, haemoglobinuria and eventually in renal failure. The observed symptoms have an acute character and a set of them is calle
