Patterns of fractional anisotropy changes in white matter of cerebellar peduncles distinguish spinocerebellar ataxia-1 from multiple system atrophy and other ataxia syndromes.

AIM: To determine prospectively if qualitative and quantitative diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) metrics of white matter integrity are better … d a probabilistic DTI tractography (PDT) method. A statistical comparison of the average fractional anisotropy (FA) in these tracts was made between subject groups, and correlated to clinical diagnosis, severity, and asymmetry. RESULTS: Of the 31 consecutive patients with ataxia, the two largest subgroups had a clinical diagnosis of multiple system atrophy …

In situ spectroscopic ellipsometry of buried organic layers under thermal treatment - part I: model discrimination and confinement-induced optical anisotropy in PEDOT:PSS/TAPC stacks.

In situ spectroscopic ellipsometry of buried organic thin films is inherently model-dependent, and parameter correlations in multilayer stac … TAPC provides a robust discriminator, while Mueller-matrix data reveal confinement-induced uniaxial anisotropy in PEDOT:PSS after prolonged annealing at 50°C. This behavior indicates thermally activated structural relaxation under constrained boundaries, producing refractive-index changes beyond intrinsic thermo-optic effects, whereas TAPC remains optically …

Air-stable four-coordinate cobalt(ii) single-ion magnets: experimental and ab initio ligand field analyses of correlations between dihedral angles and magnetic anisotropy.

For single-ion magnets (SIMs), understanding the effects of the local coordination environment and ligand field on magnetic anisotropy is key to controlling their magnetic properties. Here we present a series of tetracoordinate cobalt(ii) complexes of the general formula [FL2Co]X2 (where FL is a bidentate diamido ligand) whose electron-withdrawing -C6F5 substituents confer stability under ambient conditions. Depending on the cations X, these complexes adopt structures with greatly varying dihedral twist angle δ between the N-Co-N' chelate planes in the solid state (48.0 to 89.2°). AC and DC fi…

Low signal intensity and increased anisotropy on magnetic resonance imaging in the white matter lesion after head trauma: unrecognized findings of diffuse axonal injury.

We report on a four-year-old girl with head trauma caused by a motor vehicle accident. She presented with delirium, oculomotor palsy and ptosis in her left eye, left hemiparesis, and pyramidal signs in all extremities. Computed tomography on the day of admission showed diffuse cerebral edema with right-sided predominance. Magnetic resonance images on day 3 of admission showed lesions of diffuse axonal injury and contusion in the corpus callosum and right occipital and bilateral temporal lobes. There was a low-intensity lesion in the white matter of the right hemisphere on T2-weighted images, f

Efficiency of fractional anisotropy and apparent diffusion coefficient on diffusion tensor imaging in prognosis of neonates with hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy: a methodologic prospective pilot study.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: The DTI parameters (FA and ADC) reflect the properties of the brain microstructure. Decreased anisotropy is a common feature of cerebral tissue abnormalities. Our study investigates the neurologic prognostic efficiency of these parameters in white (PLIC, CP) and gray matter (PP) in the first days of life in term neonates with HIE. We hypothesize that lesions in related brain areas could be part of a physiopathologic substratum supporting neurologic deficiencies in this population. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 22 neonates (13 girls and 9 boys; mean gestational age,…

Anorexia nervosa and diffusion weighted imaging: An open methodological question raised by a systematic review and a fractional anisotropy anatomical likelihood estimation meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Anorexia nervosa (AN) is characterized by white matter abnormalities in neuroimaging studies. Fractional anisotropy (FA) is a diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) index that is considered an instrument for the evaluation of white matter alterations. However, the literature has recently pointed out the role of the partial volume effect (PVE) as a confounding factor for the identification of juxtaposed tissues. Our goal was to review the DTI literature in AN and evaluate possible confounding factors linked to the reported results. METHOD: A systematic review of the literature was conducte…

Simulation-Guided Tracer Optimization for Magnetic Particle Spectroscopy: Interplay of Core, Shell and Anisotropy Across Physiological-Range Viscosities for Single- and Dual-Frequency Excitation.

Detection of magnetic nanoparticles (MNP) relies on their nonlinear magnetic response, changing with the local environment in vivo. Employing an effective viscosity model within stochastic coupled Néel-Brownian simulations, we quantify how viscosity (0.8-50 000 mPa·s) affects signal intensity of single-frequency magnetic particle spectroscopy (MPS, 25 kHz) and frequency-mixing MPS (FM-MPS; fH = 40.5 kHz, fL = 0.063 kHz). We investigate single-core, non-interacting MNP with various core sizes (12-28 nm), hydrodynamic shell thicknesses (5-100 nm), and anisotropy (4-200 kJ m- 3), using dominant r…

Engineering In Vitro Models of Skeletal Muscle With Neuromuscular Junctions Using Hierarchical Micro-Nano Biomaterials: Cooperative Effect of Adhesion Ligand Nanoclustering and Surface Anisotropy.

The development of high-fidelity in vitro contractile skeletal muscle containing neuromuscular junctions (NMJs) is an unmet challenge, largely because current systems cannot accurately reproduce hierarchical micro- to nano-scale biointerfacial cues of the native extracellular matrix. This limitation impairs tissue regeneration and limits the clinical relevance of existing models for drug screening and studies of disease pathophysiology. Herein, we present hierarchical, anisotropic biomaterials that induced early maturation of myotubes and NMJ development during co-culture with motor neurons. W

Fractional anisotropy from diffusion tensor imaging correlates with acute astrocyte and myelin swelling in neonatal swine models of excitotoxic and hypoxic-ischemic brain injury.

The specific cytopathology that causes abnormal fractional anisotropy (FA) and mean diffusivity (MD) from diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) after neonatal hypoxia-ischemia (HI) is not completely understood. The panoply of cell types in the brain might contribute differentially to changes in DTI metrics. Because glia are the predominant cell type in brain, we hypothesized that changes in FA and MD would signify perturbations in glial microstructure. Using a 3-Tesla clinical scanner, we conducted in vivo DTI MRI in nine neonatal piglets at 20-96 h after excitotoxic brain injury from striatal quinol…

Conditioned Contextual Freezing is A Neurobehavioral Biomarker of Axonal Injury Indicated by Reduced Fractional Anisotropy in A Mouse Model of Blast-Induced Mild Traumatic Brain Injury.

Mild traumatic brain injury (TBI) is an important public health problem generated by closed head injury. This study is focused on the impact of blast-induced mild TBI on auditory trace and delay fear conditioning, models of declarative and non-declarative memory, respectively, and the correlation of conditioned freezing and fractional anisotropy, a measure of axonal state. A supersonic helium pressure wave was generated by a shock tube to blast 8-week-old male mice on Day 1 for 1.4 msec with an incident pressure of 16 psi, corresponding to a reflected pressure of 56.9 psi at the mouse head. On…
