Comparison of Dance-Related Foot and Ankle Injuries Among Pre-Professional Ballet, Contemporary, and Chinese Dancers.

Foot and ankle injuries have been noted as the most common in dancers. However, the variability of injury epidemiology across different dance genres has not been clearly evaluated. Herein, this study aimed to evaluate the prevalence and incidence of foot and ankle problems in pre-professional ballet, contemporary, and Chinese dancers.<br/> Methods: Participants (N = 54) were recruited from a local dance institution that offered a formal undergraduate dance program. Demographic characteristics and specifics of foot and ankle pain during dancing were collected through an online self-reporting su…

Asymptomatic foot and ankle structural injuries: a 3D imaging and finite element analysis of elite fencers.

BACKGROUND: Fencing is a highly asymmetrical combat sport, that imposes high mechanical demands over repeated exposures on the musculoskeletal structures, a primary cause of injuries in fencers. However, there are limited epidemiological studies on the structural injuries of the foot and ankle in fencers. This study aimed to investigate foot and ankle structural injuries, and explore how metatarsophalangeal joint structural changes may affect the mechanisms of foot and ankle injuries in asymptomatic fencers. METHODS: 3D images of foot and ankle morphology using computed tomography were obtain…

Should Diastatic Syndesmosis be Stabilized in Advanced Pronation-External Rotation Ankle Injuries? A Retrospective Cohort Comparison.

OBJECTIVE: With or without screw stabilization for diastatic syndesmosis in advanced pronation-external rotation (PE) ankle injuries has not yet been well-determined. Both techniques were retrospectively compared to investigate the superiority of either of the two. METHODS: A retrospective cohort study was carried out. From January 1, 2008, to December 31, 2017, 81 consecutive adult patients (average, 42 years; range, 18-78 years; 44 men and 37 women) with advanced PE ankle injuries (stage 3 or 4 PE type) were treated. After malleolar fractures were internally stabilized with screws and plate…

Comparison of External Torque to Axial Loading in Detecting 3-Dimensional Displacement of Syndesmotic Ankle Injuries.

BACKGROUND: Current imaging techniques try to quantify 3-dimensional displacement of syndesmotic ankle injuries using 2-dimensional measurements, which may obscure an exact diagnosis. Therefore, our aim was to determine 3-dimensional displacement of syndesmotic ankle injuries under load and torque using a weightbearing computed tomography (WBCT) and to assess the relation with previously established 2-dimensional measurements. METHODS: Seven paired cadaver specimens were mounted into a radiolucent frame. WBCT scans were obtained to generate 3-dimensional models after different patterns of axi…

Osteoarthritis Prevalence in Retired National Football League Players With a History of Ankle Injuries and Surgery.

CONTEXT: Ankle injuries are common at all levels of American football, and retired National Football League (NFL) players have a high prevalence of osteoarthritis (OA), but little is known about how ankle injuries influence OA prevalence and daily activities in this population or how surgical interventions for such injuries alter the risk of OA. OBJECTIVE: To examine (1) the association of ankle-injury history with OA prevalence, (2) the association of surgical intervention after ankle injury with OA prevalence, and (3) the relationships among ankle injuries, reported OA, and daily activities…

Neurovascular and tendon injuries due to ankle arthroscopy portals: a meta-analysis of interventional cadaveric studies.

Neurovascular and tendon structures are considered at risk when performing ankle arthroscopy. Injury rate and distance from portals to such structures varied in the literature. The aim of this meta-analysis is to evaluate the injury risk of these structures in terms of proximity and injury prevalence. Thirteen studies including 184 cadaveric ankle arthroscopy procedures met the inclusion criteria. The antero-central portal exhibited the highest frequencies of nerve/vessel proximity and nerve/vessel missed injuries. Weighted mean distances were as follows: 2.76 ± 2.37 mm for the superficial fib

Accuracy of the Ankle-brachial Index in the Assessment of Arterial Perfusion of Heel Pressure Injuries.

BACKGROUND: The evaluation and treatment of heel pressure injuries are a significant and expensive sequela of the aging population. Although the workup of patients with lower extremity tissue loss usually involves an assessment of the arterial blood flow by means of noninvasive vascular testing, the results may be misleading in patients with heel pressure injuries when the ankle-brachial index (ABI) does not provide direct information about perfusion of the rearfoot. The objective of this retrospective, observational investigation was to determine if noninvasive vascular testing provides accur

Musculoskeletal Health Literacy in Patients With Foot and Ankle Injuries: A Cross-Sectional Survey of Comprehension.

PURPOSE: Approximately 33% of Americans have inadequate health literacy, which is associated with decreased medical knowledge, increased hospitalization and use of emergency care, and worse control of diseases. In this study, the Literacy in Musculoskeletal Problems (LiMP) questionnaire was used to evaluate the prevalence of limited musculoskeletal literacy in patients presenting to the emergency department (ED) with foot and ankle-related complaints, as these individuals may be at increased risk for inferior outcomes. METHODS: In this cross-sectional study, individuals ≥18 years of age prese

Review of running injuries of the foot and ankle: clinical presentation and SPECT-CT imaging patterns.

Distance running is among the fastest growing sports, with record registration to marathons worldwide. It is estimated that more than half of recreational runners will experience injuries related to the practice of their sport. Three-phase bone scintigraphy is a very sensitive tool to identify sports injury, allowing imaging of hyperemia, stress reaction, enthesopathy and fractures, often before abnormalities can be detected on conventional anatomical modalities. In this article, we review the most common running related injuries and their imaging findings on bone scintigraphy with SPECT-CT.

Health care consumption and costs due to foot and ankle injuries in the Netherlands, 1986-2010.

BACKGROUND: Foot and ankle injuries account for a large proportion of Emergency Department attendance. The aim of this study was to assess population-based trends in attendances due to foot and ankle injuries in the Netherlands since 1986, and to provide a detailed analysis of health care costs in these patients. METHODS: Age- and gender-standardized emergency attendance rates and incidence rates for hospital admission were calculated for each year of the study. Injury cases and hospital length of stay were extracted from the National Injury Surveillance System (non-hospitalized patients) and…

Kinematics analysis of ankle inversion ligamentous sprain injuries in sports: five cases from televised tennis competitions.

BACKGROUND: Ankle ligamentous sprain is common in sports. The most direct way to study the mechanism quantitatively is to study real injury cases; however, it is unethical and impractical to produce an injury in the laboratory. A recently developed, model-based image-matching motion analysis technique allows quantitative analysis of real injury incidents captured in televised events and gives important knowledge for the development of injury prevention protocols and equipment. To date, there have been only 4 reported cases, and there is a need to conduct more studies for a better understanding

Intrinsic functional deficits associated with increased risk of ankle injuries: a systematic review with meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: A history of ankle injury is known to be associated with an increased risk of future injuries. Prevention of a first-time injury to an ankle will also prevent subsequent re-injury; yet these participants are often overlooked in reports of preventive testing. Determining the functional deficits which promote injury risk in all ankles, through studies inclusive of previously injured and never injured ankles, will enable training to be directed at improving known deficits in all sports participants. OBJECTIVE: To review studies investigating the measurement of intrinsic functions in

Derivation of clinical prediction rules to identify children with fractures after twisting injuries of the ankle.

OBJECTIVE: The authors sought to derive maximally sensitive prediction rules for identifying children with significant fractures after acute twisting injuries to the ankle. METHODS: The authors prospectively enrolled a convenience sample of patients younger than 18 years of age who presented to the pediatric emergency department of an urban, tertiary care center after sustaining acute twisting injuries of the ankle. The ankle was defined in two regions: the malleolar zone and the midfoot zone. Clinical findings were documented on standardized data collection sheets by faculty physicians befor

[Arthrography of the ankle joint in injuries of the fibular ligament system in children and adolescents].

Arthrography of the ankle is an optimal diagnostic tool in children and adolescents facilitating differential diagnosis between a simple ankle sprain and rupture of the fibular ligaments. It can moreover help to differentiate between rupture of a single and of two ligaments. 35 young patients with surgically confirmed ligamentous rupture were evaluated according to conventional radiographic criteria, and part of them by arthrography. The technique of the latter and the quite frequent normal variants in arthrograms of the ankle in childhood are described. The comparison of the pathologic anatom

Tissue-level distal tibia simulations to assess strain as a predictor of AIS 2 ankle injuries.

OBJECTIVE: Ankle injury is one of the most common AIS 2 motor vehicle crash injury in the lower extremity. Prior work suggests females may be at greater risk for ankle fracture than males. Accurately predicting such ankle injuries using human body models (HBMs), particularly in frontal collisions, presents a unique challenge due to the complex loading mechanisms and differences in local geometry. Injury predictors derived from tissue level testing may be able to help overcome these challenges through strain-based injury prediction. This study aimed to provide tissue-level strain data for injur…

A comparison of screw and suture button fixation in the management of adolescent ankle syndesmotic injuries.

PURPOSE: Ankle injuries involving the tibiofibular syndesmosis often necessitate operative fixation to restore stability to the ankle. Recent literature in the adult population has suggested that suture button fixation may be superior to screw fixation. There is little evidence as to which construct is preferable in the pediatric and adolescent population. This study investigates outcomes of suture button and screw fixation in adolescent ankle syndesmotic injuries. METHODS: A retrospective matched cohort study over 10 years of pediatric patients who underwent ankle syndesmotic fixation at a l…

The multi-ligament ankle fracture: Epidemiology, key anatomical findings and fixation strategies in unstable open injuries.

BACKGROUND: Ankle fracture surgery has traditionally focussed on restoration of bony anatomy, with fixation of the malleoli and syndesmotic stabilisation where applicable. However, high energy open fracture-dislocations can also result in periosteal stripping of the stabilising capsuloligamentous attachments. As such, restoration of osseous anatomy alone may not result in sufficient articular stability. OBJECTIVES: In this series from a level 1 trauma centre, we report a subset of highly unstable open ankle fractures with combined capsuloligamentous injuries, in which restoration of osseous a
