Five groups of ten 7-month-old Romney lambs were challenged twice-weekly (2 x 3,000) with either Ostertagia circumcincta (Groups 1-3) or Trichostrongylus colubrifornzis (Groups 4 and 5) infective-stage larvae (L3) following administration of controlled release capsules (CRC) containing either albendazole (ABZ-CRC) (Groups 2 and 5) or ivermectin (IVM-CRC) (Group 3). Larval challenge comprised a mixture of equal numbers of drug-susceptible and -resistant L3 (OR/TR:OS/TS) during the 14-week period of drug release. Positive faecal egg counts (FEC) were recorded in each group during this period. Eg

The toxicity and anthelminthic activity of the earlier synthetized tricyclic analogues of praziquantel and 4-acylpiperazinones-2 have been studied. Tricyclic compounds have shown the acute toxicity similar to that of praziquantel and neurotoxic effect typical of praziquantel. 4-acylpiperazinones-2 toxicity correlated with their anthelminthic effect. The determination of anthelminthic activity of the above compounds in opisthorchiasis and hymenolepiasis has shown that they are less effective than praziquantel or have no anthelminthic activity. A biological activity-structure relationship has be

A resin isolated from Mallotus philippinensis (Kamala) caused a significant purgative effect after an oral dose (120 mg/kg) in rats as assessed from the weight of faeces as well as from the surface area of blotting paper soaked by liquid faeces. The anthelmintic effect of the resin was evaluated in albino rats found to be infested with tape worms. The resin in 60 and 120 mg/kg dose had a lethal effect on 35.69% and 78.21% population of tape worms respectively, in small intestine.

The anthelmintic efficacy of fenbendazole (methyl 5-(phenyl-thio)-2-benzimidazole-carbamate) against Moniezia expansa and Trichuris ovis was tested. At dose rates of 5 mg per kg and above, efficacies were found to be greater than 91 percent against M expansa and greater than 92 per cent against T ovis. At these dose rates efficacy on egg suppression was 100 per cent for Moniezia and greater than 97 per cent for Trichuris.

The fact that the incidence of infection significantly increases in patients being a poor physical condition is commonly known. Especially in children a high rate of helminthic infection is to be expected as could be assessed by the present investigation. The easy diagnostic technique can now be combined with a highly effective new treatment, extremely well tolerated and devoid of side effects. Results obtained with the new polyvalent anthelmintic Mebendazole are described in the present study.

Routine faecal examination of a herd of weaned male goats revealed heavy infections with gastrointestinal strongyles (GIS) and Strongyloides sp. Moxidectin (routinely dosed at 0.3 mg·kg-1, i.e., 1.5 times the sheep dose), although fully effective against GIS, failed to control Strongyloides sp., with an estimated faecal egg count reduction (FECR) of only 55.5%. In addition, levamisole (11.25 mg·kg-1) and ivermectin (0.3 mg·kg-1) also failed to control Strongyloides sp., with FECRs of 1.4% and 53.5%, respectively. On the other hand, albendazole (7.5 mg·kg-1) and netobimin (11.25 mg·kg-1 and 22.

West African Dwarf (WAD) goats are extremely important in the rural village economy of West Africa, but still little is known about their bi … s in WADs under field conditions, and has contributed to the relatively successful and sustainable, anthelmintics-free, small-scale system of goat husbandry in Nigeria's humid zone, and is immunologically based and genetically controlled. The chemical investigation of the fungusBartalinia robillardoides CBS 122686 led to the isolation of two new decarestrictines bearing an unusual three-carbon unit appended to the polyketide moiety and named Botryolides F and G. The compounds were structurally characterized, and their absolute configurations were determined through a combination of spectroscopic methods, single-crystal X-ray diffraction, and electronic circular dichroism (ECD) analyses. Botryolide G was assessed for anthelmintic activity and exhibited promising efficacy at a concentration of 100 μg/mL, with no significant cytot

Neurocysticercosis (NCC), caused by Taenia solium larvae in the central nervous system, is a significant cause of acquired epilepsy. The cys … arance of the parasite. This review critically examines the metabolic pharmacology of FRD-targeting anthelmintics, synthesizes current evidence on their mechanisms of action and metabolic consequences, and highlights emerging metabolomics-based opportunities for improving therapeutic strategies against neurocysticercosis.

Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) is a Gram-positive bacterium that during sporulation produces insecticidal Crystal (Cry) proteins, which play a major role in insect control today. Some Bt Cry proteins, e.g., Cry5Ba, target nematodes and, when given orally, can cure animals of gastrointestinal nematode (GIN) parasites. To eliminate concerns about treating humans and animals with spores and live bacteria, we developed an asporogenous system for scalable and safe Cry protein delivery called IBaCC (Inactivated Bacteria with Cytosolic Crystal(s)), which results in production of a bioactive crystal and

About 50 years after their development, the benzimidazole anthelmintic drugs still occupy a key role in the treatment of parasitic diseases. … s study, we describe the development of a new series of organometallic derivatives of benzimidazole anthelmintics. Ten derivatives, six of which were organometallic, were synthesized and characterized. In silico and in vitro studies were performed to determine their biological activity. Therefore, they were screened against a range of nematodes and other parasi …

Helminth infections present a significant challenge to rural and indigenous smallholders. In a municipality of Los Lagos Region, Chile, ivermectin has been the preferred method of anthelmintic control in cattle, but its efficacy against gastrointestinal nematodes after years of usage had not been evaluated. In the spring of 2021, 30 smallholder cattle farmers and 128 bovines were selected using a one stage cluster sampling. During the first visit, fecal samples were collected, and animals were treated with subcutaneous ivermectin (0.2 mg/kg). Samples were sent to the Parasitology Laboratory of

Haemonchus contortus -the barber's pole worm poses a critical threat to ruminant health and productivity worldwide. This is due to its high host pathogenicity and poor susceptibility to chemical anthelmintics. To address this threat, sustainable and natural solutions are needed to control its infections. This study evaluated the anthelmintic efficacy of Salvia sclarea extracts against H. contortus in comparison to reference drug - the Albendazole. The extracts were obtained in ethyl acetate, ethanol, and petroleum ether, analyzed phytochemically and subjected to in-vitro testing at different c…

BACKGROUND: Multidrug-resistant bacterial strains cause several serious infections that can be fatal, such as Enterococcus faecium, Staphylococcus aureus, Klebsiella pneumonia, Acinetobacter baumannii, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Enterobacteriaceae (often referred to as ESKAPE pathogens). Since ancient times, several indigenous medical systems in India have utilized diverse medicinal plants (approximately 80,000 species) as conventional treatments for a variety of illnesses. A member of the Fabaceae family, also referred to as "Himalayan indigo," Indigofera heterantha Wall, is well known for i

Gastrointestinal helminths interact with the gut microbiota in ways that shape microbiota structure and function, but these effects are highly inconsistent across studies. One factor that may help explain variation in parasite-microbiota interactions is host sex since helminths can induce sex-specific changes in feeding behaviour and diet that might cascade to shape gut microbial communities. We tested this idea using an anthelmintic treatment experiment in wild Grant's gazelles (Nanger granti). We found that in males, anthelmintic treatment induced short-term shifts in microbial diversity and
