BACKGROUND: Yeasts are found in urine specimens relatively often, especially in the elderly and patients under treatment with broad spectrum antibiotics, i. e. especially in intensive care unit (ICU) patients. In some cases, the number of pathogens is very high, i. e. >105/ml. The clinical relevance of detecting Candida in urine is difficult to assess. In the German S3 guidelines it is apodictically stated that an ascending infection of the urinary tract by yeasts does not occur but this may undoubtedly happen in certain instances in patients at risk, for example in the elderly, in diabetic pe

BACKGROUND: With increasing antimicrobial resistance, the attractiveness of antibiotic-sparing approaches in urinary tract infections increases.
OBJECTIVES: Current evidence on alternative treatment options to antibiotics in urinary tract infections.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A narrative review of current guidelines and selected literature was performed.
RESULTS: Rates of symptom relief or symptom resolution are comparable between nonantibiotic and antibiotic therapies. A small risk increase of pyelonephritis remains but does not influence the overall recommendation of an antibiotic-sparing th

Studies of feline lower urinary tract disease (FLUTD) among Norwegian cats have shown higher prevalences of bacterial cystitis than most previously published reports. The aims of the present study were to identify bacterial isolates obtained from the urine of Norwegian cats with FLUTD and their susceptibility to antimicrobial agents. Eighty-two bacterial isolates from 72 urine cultures obtained from 71 different cats were included. Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus species, Enterococcus species and Streptococcus species were the most frequently detected. The percentages of isolates susceptible

It was shown that prophylactic use of ciprofloxacin (500 mg per os 30 min prior to and 5 days after transrectal multifocal prostatic biopsy) along with topical treatment with 40 ml 1% povidone-iodine and evacuant enema provided negative bacteriological urine analysis in 24 hours for 94.4 per cent of cases. Positive effect was registered for all patients as no urinary tract infections were demonstrated. Transitory fever over 37.5 degrees C was not registered at 67 (97.2 per cent) patients, for the rest cases no changes of the treatment regime were necessary. The results of the trial proves high

The usefulness of antimicrobial drugs for prevention of certain infections has been well proven. The use of antibiotics during surgery, in order to prevent increased morbidity and expense associated with surgical infections, is a well accepted part of clinical practice. Experience with various techniques for their administration suggests that refinement in drug selection, dosage, and the timing of administration improves the efficacy of prophylactic antimicrobials. For surgical implants, nontraditional uses of antimicrobial drugs are probably indicated. Urinary tract infections can be postpone

Catheter-associated urinary tract infections (CAUTIs) continue to be a concern in health care. According to the Agency on Healthcare Research and Quality, the cost associated with a single CAUTI is estimated to be $13,793 on average but can be as high as $29,743. Decreasing CAUTIs through preventative strategies will benefit both the patient and the healthcare organization. There were limited studies utilizing 2% and 4% chlorhexidine gluconate (CHG) as an intervention for CAUTI prevention. There was also an insufficient research about indwelling catheters, also known as a Foley catheters, and

The management of infections caused by carbapenem-resistant organisms has been a challenge. We report a rare emergence of resistance to the novel beta-lactam/ beta-lactamase combination ceftolozane/tazobactam by Klebsiella pneumoniae, causing urinary tract infection. The K. pneumoniae, in this case, was reported to be sensitive to the other novel beta-lactam/ beta-lactamase combination of ceftazidime/avibactam. The timely administration of ceftazidime/avibactam resulted in prompt clinical resolution of the urinary tract infection caused by an extensively drug-resistant K. pneumoniae.

Nosocomial infections and antimicrobial resistance are topics that have been intensely studied in human medicine because of their significant impact on human health. In recent years, concerns have been raised that the use of antibiotics in veterinary medicine, animal husbandry, and agriculture may be contributing to the development of resistance in common bacterial species affecting human beings. Although there is inadequate proof at this time that the resistance is transmitted from animals to people, if antibiotics continue to be used indiscriminately in veterinary medicine, veterinarians may

Infections are a major cause of morbidity and mortality after organ transplantation in children. Immunosuppression, surgery, and invasive devices all predispose to infection. A comprehensive pretransplantation evaluation can minimize risks and help anticipate special problems. Appropriate anti-microbial coverage during the perioperative period decreases the risk of infection. Bacteria and fungi are the major causes of infections occurring in the first month after transplantation. The site of infection during this period varies by organ transplanted: liver recipients often have intraabdominal i

It is now important to differentiate lower urinary tract infection also known as classical acute cystitis (because it involves a healthy genitourinary system) from complicated or potentially complicated urinary tract infection. The bacteriology of lower urinary tract infection is dominated by enterobacteria and Escherichia coli in particular. Since E. coli are now commonly resistant to amoxicillin and cotrimoxazole, those antibiotics cannot be used as first-intention. Fluoroquinolones, fosfomycin trometamol or furans must be preferred instead. The clinical problem here is trying to avoid overz

Pseudomonas aeruginosa (P. aeruginosa) is a leading cause of urinary tract infections (UTIs). The escalating misuse of antibiotics has led to the emergence of multidrug-resistant strains, necessitating novel therapeutic approaches. Bacteriophages and their encoded lytic enzymes offer unique advantages for antimicrobial therapy and show promising potential for future applications. This study focuses on the characterization of uropathogenic P. aeruginosa phages and their lytic enzymes, investigating their biological properties and potential therapeutic applications. We isolated a novel lytic bac

Urinary tract infections (UTIs) are the most frequent infectious complication after kidney transplantation and are associated with rehospitalizations, impaired allograft function, and reduced graft and recipient survival. Their clinical relevance is amplified by chronic kidney disease (CKD)-related immune dysfunction and the rising burden of antimicrobial resistance METHODS: We provide a focused narrative review of classification, pathophysiology, risk factors, and evidence-based management and prevention strategies for UTIs in kidney transplant recipients, with emphasis on antimicrobial stewa

The latest 2025 guidelines of the European Association of Urology (EAU), the American Urological Association, the Canadian Urological Association, and the Society of Urodynamics, Female Pelvic Medicine & Urogenital Reconstruction (AUA/CUA/SUFU) introduce a new classification system for urinary tract infections (UTIs) and update sections on cystitis and asymptomatic bacteriuria (ABU). Current approaches to the management of patients with UTIs, ABU, and even symptomatic bacteriuria are being reconsidered. In the era of increasing antimicrobial resistance among uropathogens, advances in researchi

IMPORTANCE: Given worsening global antibiotic resistance, antimicrobial stewardship aims to use the shortest effective duration of the most narrow-spectrum, effective antibiotic for patients with specific urinary symptoms and laboratory testing consistent with urinary tract infection (UTI). Inappropriate treatment and unnecessary antibiotic switching for UTIs harms patients in a multitude of ways.
OBJECTIVE: This study sought to analyze antibiotic treatment failures as measured by antibiotic switching for treatment of UTI in emergent and ambulatory care.
STUDY DESIGN: For this retrospective
