Anxiety disorders in suicidal youth.

OBJECTIVE: To test the hypothesis that anxiety disorders are associated with suicidal ideation and suicide attempts in a child and adolescent sample referred to a clinic. METHOD: The sample comprised 1979 patients aged 5 to 19 years who were assessed using the Schedule for Affective Disorders and Schizophrenia for School Aged Children--Present Episode (K-SADS-P) at an outpatient mood and anxiety disorders clinic. Subjects were stratified by age and categorized into mutually exclusive groups as being nonsuicidal (n = 817), having suicidal ideation (n = 768), or having attempted suicide (n = 39

Anxiety disorders in anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa: co-morbidity and chronology of appearance.

The objectives of the study were to assess lifetime prevalence of specific anxiety disorders, and their age of onset relative to that of eating disorders (ED), in a French sample of patients with anorexia nervosa (AN) or bulimia nervosa (BN). We assessed frequencies of seven anxiety disorders and childhood histories of separation anxiety disorder among 63 subjects with a current DSM-IV diagnosis of an ED, using the Composite International Diagnostic Interview (CIDI). Eighty-three percent of subjects with AN and 71% of those with BN had at least one lifetime diagnosis of an anxiety disorder. By

Guilt over "Having a Life": Understanding and Addressing Separation/Disloyalty Guilt.

This article aims to offer an overview of our knowledge about separation/disloyalty guilt, a maladaptive kind of interpersonal guilt that derives from pathogenic beliefs that associate the healthy and adaptive goals of being separate, different, and independent from important others with the danger of deeply hurting them. These pathogenic beliefs stem from early relational traumas and adverse experiences, such as having had relatives who showed their children that they were visibly hurt by the attempts at exploration and differentiation from their children. Separation/disloyalty guilt has been

An empirical analysis of mental state talk and affect regulation in two single-cases of psychodynamic child therapy.

Literature has shown the importance of mentalizing techniques in symptom remission and emotional understanding; however, no study to date has looked at the dynamic relations between mental state talk and affect regulation in the psychotherapy process. From a psychodynamic perspective, the emergence of the child's capacity to regulate affect through the therapist's reflection on the child's mental states is a core aspect of treatment. In an empirical investigation of 2 single cases with separation anxiety disorder, who were treated in long-term psychodynamic play therapy informed with mentaliza

Electrodermal activity in anxiety disorders.

Forty anxiety patients diagnosed according to DSM-III-R criteria were included: panic disorder (n = 12), agoraphobia (n = 11), generalized anxiety disorder (n = 9), anxiety disorder not otherwise specified (n = 8) and compared with 12 controls. Millon Clinical Multiaxial Inventory and Symptom Checklist-90R symptom and personality scales did not separate the diagnostic groups. Electrodermal activity showed delayed habituation and high spontaneous skin resistance fluctuations in the panic and agoraphobia groups compared with the non-panic groups. The generalized anxiety disorder patients could n

A multitrait-multimethod analysis of the construct validity of child anxiety disorders in a clinical sample.

The present study examines the construct validity of separation anxiety disorder (SAD), social phobia (SoP), panic disorder (PD), and generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) in a clinical sample of children. Participants were 174 children, 6 to 17 years old (94 boys) who had undergone a diagnostic evaluation at a university hospital based clinic. Parent and child ratings of symptom severity were assessed using the Multidimensional Anxiety Scale for Children (MASC). Diagnostician ratings were obtained from the Anxiety Disorders Interview Schedule for Children and Parents (ADIS: C/P). Discriminant an

Fears in clinic-referred children: relations with child anxiety sensitivity, maternal overcontrol, and maternal phobic anxiety.

Relations among maternal phobic anxiety, maternal overcontrol, child anxiety sensitivity, and child level of fear were explored in 156 children referred to an outpatient clinic for psychological evaluation. In addition, these relations were examined separately in analyses of age, gender, and diagnostic status. Overall, age, gender, and child anxiety sensitivity, along with maternal ratings of an overly controlling parenting strategy were significant predictors of levels of fear. These four variables predicted approximately 50% of the variance associated with fear levels. Surprisingly, maternal

Antidepressant treatments in children and adolescents: II. Anxiety, physical, and behavioral disorders.

Part II of this review critically evaluates antidepressants' (AD) efficacy in children and adolescents with anxiety, physical, and behavioral disorders as well as AD's side-effect spectrum. AD are administered increasingly to youths with specific anxiety syndromes phenomenologically paralleling those in adults which are responsive to AD (e.g., panic, obsessive-compulsive disorders). While several trials have not substantiated earlier theoretical considerations suggesting their usefulness in separation anxiety, their recent success in ameliorating obsessive-compulsive symptoms is encouraging. Bumetanide treatment during early development rescues maternal separation-induced susceptibility to stress.

Stress is a major risk factor for psychiatric disorders, such as depression, posttraumatic stress disorder, and schizophrenia. Early life stress, such as maternal separation, can have long-term effects on the development of the central nervous system and pathogenesis of psychiatric disorders. In the present study, we found that maternal separation increased the susceptibility to stress in adolescent rats, increased the expression of Na+/K+/2Cl- cotransporter 1 (NKCC1) on postnatal day 14, and increased the expression of K+/2Cl- cotransporter 2 (KCC2) and γ-aminobutyric acid A (GABAA) receptor

Comparative Efficacy of Video Games Versus Midazolam in Reducing Perioperative Anxiety in Pediatric Patients: Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

BACKGROUND: Pediatric patients undergoing surgery frequently experience significant anxiety, which can result in adverse effects such as prolonged sedation and behavioral changes associated with pharmacological interventions such as oral midazolam. Video games offer a nonpharmacological distraction method that shows promise in alleviating procedural anxiety without significant adverse effects. However, the effectiveness of video games compared to midazolam in managing perioperative anxiety remains uncertain. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of video game interventions

Are comorbidities of poor reading related to elevated anxiety in children?

Studies of the association between dyslexia and mental health have typically tried to minimise the influence of dyslexia comorbidities on the outcomes. However, in the "real world", many children with dyslexia have these comorbidities. In this study, we tested (1) if children with dyslexia with three common comorbidities - inattention, hyperactivity, language difficulties - experience more anxiety than children with dyslexia without these comorbidities; and (2) if any type of comorbidity is related to a certain type of anxiety (reading, social, generalised, or separation). The data of 82 child

Perinatal Stress and Methamphetamine Exposure Decreases Anxiety-Like Behavior in Adult Male Rats.

Methamphetamine (MA) is an illicit synthetic psychostimulant drug, and its abuse is growing worldwide. MA has been reported as the primary drug of choice, by drug-abusing women, during pregnancy. Since MA easily crosses the placental barrier, the fetus is exposed to MA in a similar fashion to the mother. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of long-term perinatal stressors and drug exposure on anxiety-like behavior in adult male rats using the open field test (OF) and elevated plus maze (EPM). Dams were divided into three groups according to drug treatment during pregnancy: controls (C), sa

A psychometric analysis of the Revised Child Anxiety and Depression Scales--parent version in a school sample.

The Revised Child Anxiety and Depression Scale-Parent Version (RCADS-P) is a parent-report questionnaire of youth anxiety and depression with scales corresponding to the DSM diagnoses of separation anxiety disorder, social phobia, generalized anxiety disorder, panic disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder, and major depressive disorder. The RCADS-P was recently developed and has previously demonstrated strong psychometric properties in a clinic-referred sample (Ebesutani et al., Journal of Abnormal Child Psychology 38, 249-260, 2010b). The present study examined the psychometric properties of
