BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Some stroke patients complain of an unpleasant sensation of coldness in the hemiplegic arm. This study aimed to determine the prevalence of this symptom and any associated features.
METHODS: A questionnaire about symptoms in the arms was sent to patients at least 12 months after stroke. Reflex sympathetic dystrophy (RSD) was diagnosed if four typical symptoms were present in the arm.

A 27-year-old woman developed acute pain, pallor and feeling of cold in her left arm. She had been a smoker of 15-20 cigarettes daily since the age of 15 years, but had not previously had any serious illness. We report on a 5-month-old boy with a de novo interstitial deletion of the proximal short arm of chromosome 8 (p21p11.2). He manifested bilateral cleft lip and palate, and apparent hypogonadism. Two patients with venous obstruction of the arm are reported. Obstruction in one patient was caused by a congenital web of the subclavian vein, in the second by granulomatous thrombophlebitis of the brachiocephalic vein. Both patients were successfully treated by operation. All obstructive symptoms subsided completely. Control phlebography one week and three months postoperatively showed patent reconstructions.

The medial antebrachial cutaneous nerve and the medial brachial cutaneous nerve were dissected in twenty fresh cadaver extremities. These nerves have a variable number of cutaneous branches ranging from four to twelve, with an average of eight. From 1970 to 1985, 13 patients were treated as a result of an upper limb traumatic sub-amputation. Three of them were younger than 15 years and another one was only 3 years old at the time of the trauma. All the elements involved in the treatment of the lesions are described. When it was possible, an end-to-end anastomosis was used for the repair of arteries and veins. Otherwise, when the loss of tissue was marked, a saphenous vein graft was used. Below-knee femoro-popliteal and especially femoro-distal bypass with nonautologous bypass material is met with poor patency rates. During an eight-year period, nine (composite) arm-vein grafts were done in eight patients. In only one patient, the arm-vein bypass was a primary procedure. Patients with severe chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) frequently lean forward, bracing their arms. We wondered whether the resulting shoulder girdle support improves the function of the ventilatory pump. Rotator cuff injuries, especially in athletes, can be very disabling. A case of an isolated rupture of the subscapularis tendon in an arm wrestler is reported. Preoperative arthrogram and CT scan with intraoperative pictures are used to illustrate the pathology. Recommendation for treatment is surgical repair.

Nodular fasciitis is a benign, fibroproliferative, tumorlike lesion. Histological differentiation from sarcomas can be difficult. Surgical excision is most effective, recurrences are rare. This case report deals with the onset and natural course of nodular fasciitis in the upper arm of a marksman. When instructing young people in shooting, he had to pace different weapons against the upper third of his arm instead against the shoulder. Here a tender swelling developed. After extirpation he reported pain relief. A recurrence has not been observed so far.

Pulmonary embolism is described as an infrequent complication of axillary and subclavian vein thrombosis. We have reported our recent clinical experience with 14 patients admitted to the Harbor-UCLA Medical Center who had a clinical diagnosis of axillary and subclavian vein thrombosis documented by phlebography of the thrombosed arm. Two children with monosomy 10p13 are reported. In the first case the monosomy was the result of a maternal balanced translocation t(3;10) (p27;p13) while the second case was a de novo mutation.
