Incidence and predictors of mortality among neonates admitted with birth asphyxia to neonatal intensive care unit of West Shewa Zone Public Hospitals, Central Ethiopia.

BACKGROUND: Birth asphyxia is still one of the primary causes of newborn mortality worldwide. Similarly, the risk of newborn asphyxia in Ethiopia remains unacceptably high. Thus, studies on the incidence and predictors of mortality among newborns admitted with birth asphyxia are crucial to addressing this problem. As a result, the purpose of this study was to assess the incidence and predictors of mortality among neonates admitted with birth asphyxia to the neonatal intensive care units (NICUs) of West Shewa Zone Public Hospitals in Central Ethiopia. METHODS: An institution-based retrospectiv

Treatments and outcomes of neonatal disseminated intravascular coagulation with and without neonatal asphyxia: A retrospective study using nationwide data in Japan.

BACKGROUND: Although neonatal disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC) is associated with high mortality and severe complications, few studies have reported its clinical course. We aimed to describe the characteristics, treatments, and outcomes of neonatal DIC by using a national inpatient database. METHODS: Using the Japanese Diagnosis Procedure Combination database, we identified 5533 patients with neonatal DIC who were admitted to neonatal intensive care units between July 2010 and March 2020. We categorized the patients into those with asphyxia (n = 2911) and those without asphyxia (n

Perinatal origin of adult self-destructive behavior.

The study was undertaken to test whether obstetric procedures are of importance for eventual adult behavior of the newborn, as ecological data from the United States seem to indicate. Birth record data were gathered for 412 forensic victims comprising suicides, alcoholics and drug addicts born in Stockholm after 1940, and who died there in 1978-1984. The births of the victims were unevenly distributed among six hospitals. Comparison with 2,901 controls, and mutual comparison of categories, showed that suicides involving asphyxiation were closely associated with asphyxia at birth, suicides by v

Association between hydrogen gas inhalation and cardiac output in an asphyxiated piglet model.

About 80% of neonates with hypoxic-ischaemic encephalopathy (HIE) have cardiovascular dysfunction and are vulnerable to late-onset injury due to disrupted cerebral blood flow and metabolism. We previously reported the neuroprotective effect of hydrogen (H2) gas. This study investigated the effects of H2 gas inhalation on cardiac function in piglets after hypoxia-ischaemia (HI). Seventeen piglets ≤ 24 h old were subjected to HI insult for approximately 40 min and, after 10 min of resuscitation, were divided into an HI group (n = 10) and an HI-H2 gas inhalation group (2.2%–2.7% H2 gas for 6 h; n

Prevalence of Perinatal Asphyxia Using Apgar Scores and Cord Blood pH and the Relationship between the Two Methods: A Study of FMC Umuahia.

BACKGROUND: Perinatal asphyxia contributes significantly to neonatal morbidity and mortality. It occurs worldwide, and the Apgar score is the most widely used method of diagnosis. Recently, umbilical cord arterial pH has been reported as the most objective way to assess fetal acidosis at birth as it predicts the adverse outcome of perinatal asphyxia. It is imperative to establish the concordance between these two diagnostic methods to reinforce the practicality of the Apgar score as the preferred diagnostic tool for perinatal asphyxia in developing nations, such as Nigeria. AIM: To determine

Birth asphyxia and its association with grand multiparity and referral among hospital births: A prospective cross-sectional study in Benin, Malawi, Tanzania and Uganda.

INTRODUCTION: Birth asphyxia is a leading cause of neonatal mortality in sub-Saharan Africa. The relationship to grand multiparity (GM), a controversial pregnancy risk factor, remains largely unexplored, especially in the context of large multinational studies. We investigated birth asphyxia and its association with GM and referral in Benin, Malawi, Tanzania and Uganda. MATERIAL AND METHODS: This was a prospective cross-sectional study. Data were collected using a perinatal e-Registry in 16 hospitals (four per country). The study population consisted of 80 663 babies (>1000 g, >28 weeks' gest

The PURPOSe cause of death study in stillbirths and neonatal deaths in India and Pakistan: A review.

The PURPOSe study was a prospective, observational study conducted in India and Pakistan to determine the cause of death for stillbirths and preterm neonatal deaths, using clinical data together with minimally invasive tissue sampling (MITS) and the histologic and polymerase chain reaction (PCR) evaluation of fetal/neonatal tissues and the placenta. After evaluating all available data, an independent panel chose a maternal, a placental and a fetal/neonatal cause of death. Here, we summarise the major results. Among the most important findings were that most stillbirths were caused by fetal asp

Additional Value of 3-Month Cranial Magnetic Resonance Imaging in Infants with Neonatal Encephalopathy following Perinatal Asphyxia.

OBJECTIVE: To assess the evolution of neonatal brain injury noted on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), develop a score to assess brain injury on 3-month MRI, and determine the association of 3-month MRI with neurodevelopmental outcome in neonatal encephalopathy (NE) following perinatal asphyxia. METHODS: This was a retrospective, single-center study including 63 infants with perinatal asphyxia and NE (n = 28 cooled) with cranial MRI <2 weeks and 2-4 months after birth. Both scans were assessed using biometrics, a validated injury score for neonatal MRI, and a new score for 3-month MRI, with a

Outcome Prediction and Inter-Rater Comparison of Four Brain Magnetic Resonance Imaging Scoring Systems of Infants with Perinatal Asphyxia and Therapeutic Hypothermia.

INTRODUCTION: The brain magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) result is a major predictor for the outcome of term infants with perinatal asphyxia who underwent therapeutic hypothermia. In daily practice, no uniform method is used to assess these images. PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to determine which MRI-score best predicts adverse outcome at 24 months of age and has the highest inter-rater reliability. METHODS: Four MRI scoring systems for term infants with perinatal asphyxia were selected: Rutherford score, Trivedi score, Weeke score, and NICHD NRN score. Experienced blinded raters retros

Survival and predictors of asphyxia among neonates admitted in neonatal intensive care units of public hospitals of Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, 2021: a retrospective follow-up study.

BACKGROUND: Globally, perinatal asphyxia (PNA) is a significant cause of most neonatal deaths. Similarly, the burden of birth asphyxia in Ethiopia remains high (22.52%) and has been noted the second leading cause of neonatal mortality. Thus, researches on survival status and predictors of perinatal asphyxia are critical to tackle it. Therefore, the current study intended to determine the survival status and predictors of asphyxia among neonates admitted in Neonatal Intensive Care Units of public hospitals, Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. METHODS: Hospital-based retrospective follow-up study was conduc

Magnitude of neonatal asphyxia and its predictors among newborns at public hospitals of Wolaita Zone in Southern Ethiopia, 2023.

BACKGROUND: Neonatal asphyxia is one of preventable causes of neonatal mortality throughout the world. It could be improved by early detection and control of the underlying causes. However, there was lack of evidence on it in the study setting. Thus, the aim of this study was to assess the magnitude and predictors of neonatal asphyxia among newborns at public hospitals of Wolaita Zone in Southern Ethiopia. METHOD: A facility-based cross-sectional study was done among 330 mothers with neonates in selected public hospitals. A systematic random sampling technique was used to select the study par

Acute Kidney Injury in Neonatal Hypoxic-Ischemic Encephalopathy Patients Treated with Therapeutic Hypothermia: Incidence and Risk Factors.

Studies in infants with hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy (HIE) due to perinatal asphyxia have generally focused on neurological outcomes. Although acute kidney injury (AKI) rate decreased in advent of therapeutic hypothermia (TH), it is still a common and important entity. In this retrospective study, we aimed to investigate the risk factors for AKI in HIE patients treated with hypothermia. Infants treated with TH due to HIE were reviewed retrospectively and infants who developed AKI and not were compared. Ninety-six patients were enrolled in the study. AKI developed in 27 (28%) patients and 4
