BACKGROUND: Portomesenteric venous thrombosis (PMVT) is a rare complication of bariatric surgery that can lead to cavernous transformation of the portal vein. There are no established treatment algorithms regarding anticoagulation (AC) only vs. catheter-directed thrombolysis in this population.
METHODS: Medical records at 4 urban bariatric surgery centers were queried for patients diagnosed with PMVT between 2012 and 2025. Patient characteristics, perioperative details, imaging at PMVT diagnosis, treatment course, and follow-up imaging were reviewed. Fisher's exact testing was conducted to id

OBJECTIVES: This retrospective cross-sectional study aimed to investigate the differences and influencing factors between the headache patients who achieved complete remission or significant reduction in headache frequency postoperatively and those whose frequency remained unchanged.
METHODS: The study was conducted on 386 patients who underwent bariatric surgery at the four university hospitals between January 2018 and June 2024. Patients were divided two groups as with or without headache and then patients with headache were divided into migraine and tension-type headache groups.
RESULTS:

Obesity is a chronic disease characterized by an abnormal or excessive accumulation of body fat. Common interventions include lifestyle changes, hypocaloric diets, and incretin mimetics, all of which have limited efficacy. Metabolic and bariatric surgery (MBS) continues to gain prominence as an effective treatment for obesity, owing to sustained weight loss and improvement in comorbid conditions. Pancreatic exocrine insufficiency (PEI) is an under-recognized but clinically significant complication of MBS. It is characterized by inadequate pancreatic enzyme secretion, resulting in fat malabsorp

BACKGROUND: Lipedema often remains undiagnosed in patients with obesity, leading to mismanagement of treatment. Because of this, despite remarkable weight loss after bariatric surgery and decreases in hip and abdomen circumference, some patients show only small decreases in the circumference of the extremities and report persistent limb pain. We present the first scoping review to systematically explore the reported patient characteristics, clinical outcomes, and diagnostic challenges of lipedema in patients undergoing metabolic bariatric surgery, to identify gaps in current practice and promo

BACKGROUND: Obesity and lymphedema pose serious public healthcare problems. Though there are clear links between both chronic conditions, they are rarely treated together.
METHODS: We describe the successful management of secondary lower limb lymphedema by the combination of obesity and lymphedema treatment in a 44-year-old patient with a body mass index of 35. She underwent simultaneous a vascularized lymph node transfer by repurposing the gastroepiploic lymph nodes from the sleeve gastrectomy.
RESULTS: The patient recovered uneventfully with significant improvement in her BMI and lymphedem

BACKGROUND: Due to the generally increasing number of obese patients with obesity-associated comorbidities (e.g. type 2 diabetes mellitus and nonalcoholic fatty liver disease/steatohepatitis), they are increasingly becoming transplantation candidates; however, this patient cohort is more frequently affected by intraoperative and postoperative complications and poorer transplant outcome.
OBJECTIVE: This article provides an overview of the indications, choice of procedure and outcome of bariatric surgery prior to solid organ transplantation.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: The current literature was eva

Bariatric surgery is indicated for patients with a body mass index ≥ 40 kg/m2 or ≥ 35 kg/m2 with comorbidities, after failure of conservative management. Its success relies on a multidisciplinary approach and personalized post-operative follow-up: control of reflux and mechanical complications for sleeve, in-depth nutritional assessment and management of malabsorption syndromes, dumping and undernutrition for bypass. Weight regain >10% of nadir weight warrants multidisciplinary reassessment.

Metabolic and bariatric surgery is generally known to decrease rates of eating disorders post-procedure. In the relatively uncommon event that an eating disorder develops de novo or recurs after bariatric surgery, most cases are associated with suboptimal weight loss or further weight gain. This case report presents the history of a 56-year-old woman without a prior eating disorder diagnosis who developed anorexia nervosa restricting type after bariatric surgery, leading to psychiatric hospitalization. Implications for surgical decision-making in tandem with psychiatric screening pre-surgicall

BACKGROUND: Obesity is not only a risk factor for chronic kidney disease (CKD) but also accelerates its progression. Metabolic bariatric surgery has been shown to improve the course of CKD significantly. This study aims to explore the impact of metabolic bariatric surgery on renal function from various angles, including pre- and post-operative comparisons, differences between surgical techniques, and subgroup analyses based on kidney function.
METHODS: We analyzed the outcomes of patients who underwent Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RYGB) or laparoscopic Sleeve Gastrectomy (LSG) between January 20

The risk of sarcopenic obesity (SO), characterized by the coexistence of excess adiposity and low muscle mass and function, may be increased in metabolic and bariatric surgery (MBS). There is a possibility of SO development after surgery, but also aggravation of pre-existing SO, a hidden condition associated with poor health-related outcomes. This scoping review synthesizes existing literature on SO in MBS, with a thorough discussion of diagnostic criteria and assessment methods, investigation of SO prevalence (presurgery and postsurgery), incidence postsurgery, and impact on clinical outcomes

Obesity significantly impacts reproductive health, increasing risks for infertility, early pregnancy loss, gestational diabetes, hypertension, preterm birth, stillbirth, and delivery complications, such as cesarean delivery, surgical infections, and postpartum hemorrhage. Obesity raises the likelihood of congenital anomalies, while reducing the effectiveness of ultrasound for anomaly detection, and has long-term effects on offspring. Bariatric surgery can improve outcomes by reducing risks of gestational diabetes and macrosomia, but nutritional deficiencies and surgical complications require c

Gastrointestinal permeability refers to the movement of substances across the gut wall. This is mediated by endotoxemia (bacterial products entering the systemic circulation), and is associated with metabolic disease. The effect of bariatric surgery on permeability remains uncertain; the associated dietary, metabolic and weight changes are suggested to influence, or trigger, altered permeability. The primary aim of this study is to synthesize evidence and analyze the effect of bariatric surgery on permeability. A systematic review was performed, searching MEDLINE, EMBASE, and Scopus until Febr

With the alarmingly increasing prevalence of obesity in the Western world, it has become necessary to provide more acceptable treatment options for patients with obesity. Minimally invasive endoscopic techniques are continuously evolving. Currently, metabolic and bariatric endoscopies encompass several different techniques that can offer significant weight loss and improvement in comorbidities with a favorable safety profile. Restrictive bariatric procedures include the use of intragastric balloons and gastric remodeling techniques with different suturing devices. Several studies have demonstr

BACKGROUND: The increasing prevalence of bariatric surgeries in China has led to a growing number of patients experiencing massive weight loss and abdominal skin laxity. However, there is a scarcity of reports addressing post-bariatric lipoabdominoplasty in these patients. This study aims to present our clinical experiences with lipoabdominoplasty in post-bariatric patients in China.
METHODS: We performed lipoabdominoplasty on patients who had abdominal skin laxity following bariatric surgery between March 2018 and October 2023. The procedure encompassed abdominal liposuction, plication of th

Our objective was to summarize the available literature on the use of preoperative esophagogastroduodenoscopy (EGD) and its impact on management and/or postoperative outcomes in pediatric patients undergoing metabolic and bariatric surgery. We performed a search using PubMed in February 2023 for articles examining EGD and any clinical correlation in pediatric patients undergoing bariatric surgery. Search results were manually reviewed and included in the study if they examined findings of EGD done prior to bariatric surgery and were excluded if they were not primarily done in pediatric or adol
