Using cuprolinic blue as a stain along with enzymic digestion, heparan sulphate has been identified as the main glycosaminoglycan in the basement membrane of human gallbladder epithelium. We report the case of a patient with atypical bullous pemphigoid and haemoptysis in whom circulating IgG skin basement membrane zone antibodies were demonstrated. Six years later she developed acute renal failure due to Goodpasture's syndrome. This is the first case to raise the possibility of a link between epidermal and glomerular basement membrane antibodies.

Adsorption of human IgG from pregnancy sera to placental basement membrane collagen could be demonstrated by an in-vitro assay. Corneal epithelial opacities similar to those seen in corneal epithelial basement membrane dystrophy were seen in 33 of 71 eyes following radial keratotomy. These changes were clinically indistinguishable from those seen in map-fingerprint-dot dystrophy with map type changes seen most often. Eleven patients with Alport's syndrome had renal transplantation between 1963 and 1980. The mean follow-up is 6 years (6 months to 14 years). All 11 patients are currently alive. Glomerular basement membrane (GBM) were isolated from the kidneys of rats suffering from daunomycin nephrosis or nephrotoxic serum nephritis. In 32 patients from 27 families affected with hereditary neophropathy (Alport syndrome) the glomerular basement membranes were examined electron microscopically and the percentage of characteristically split and thin basement membrane portions was determined.
