Adaptation of the living therapeutic materials concept to the immune sensing of neutrophil granulocytes.

Neutrophils are innate immune cells that perpetually patrol the circulation and tissues. They sense and migrate toward invading microbes to initiate and orchestrate a robust immune response. Their highly reactive nature, driven by multiple and redundant receptor families recognizing bacterial components, makes them particularly sensitive to contaminants or nonsterile implants. This often leads to a neutrophil-driven foreign body reaction that shields the implant and triggers inflammation, collateral tissue damage, or even sepsis. This presents a significant challenge for living therapeutic mat

The promising prospect of human hair follicle regeneration in the shadow of new tissue engineering strategies.

Hair loss disorder (alopecia) affects numerous people around the world. The low effectiveness and numerous side effects of common treatments have prompted researchers to investigate alternative and effective solutions. Hair follicle (HF) bioengineering is the knowledge of using hair-inductive (trichogenic) cells. Most bioengineering-based approaches focus on regenerating folliculogenesis through manipulation of regulators of physical/molecular properties in the HF niche. Despite the high potential of cell therapy, no cell product has been produced for effective treatment in the field of hair r

Interfacing Neuron-Motor Pathways with Stretchable and Biocompatible Electrode Arrays.

In the field of neuroscience, understanding the complex interactions within the intricate neuron-motor system depends crucially on the use of high-density, physiological multiple electrode arrays (MEAs). In the neuron-motor system, the transmission of biological signals primarily occurs through electrical and chemical signaling. Taking neurons for instance, when a neuron receives external stimuli, it generates an electrical signal known as the action potential. This action potential propagates along the neuron's axon and is transmitted to other neurons via synapses. At the synapse, chemical si

Leveraging Biomaterial Platforms to Study Aging-Related Neural and Muscular Degeneration.

Aging is a complex multifactorial process that results in tissue function impairment across the whole organism. One of the common consequences of this process is the loss of muscle mass and the associated decline in muscle function, known as sarcopenia. Aging also presents with an increased risk of developing other pathological conditions such as neurodegeneration. Muscular and neuronal degeneration cause mobility issues and cognitive impairment, hence having a major impact on the quality of life of the older population. The development of novel therapies that can ameliorate the effects of agi

Biological Macromolecule-Based Scaffolds for Urethra Reconstruction.

Urethral reconstruction strategies are limited with many associated drawbacks. In this context, the main challenge is the unavailability of a suitable tissue that can endure urine exposure. However, most of the used tissues in clinical practices are non-specialized grafts that finally fail to prevent urine leakage. Tissue engineering has offered novel solutions to address this dilemma. In this technology, scaffolding biomaterials characteristics are of prime importance. Biological macromolecules are naturally derived polymers that have been extensively studied for various tissue engineering ap

Interpenetrating network design of bioactive hydrogel coatings with enhanced damage resistance.

Bioactive hydrogel coatings offer a promising route to introduce sustained thromboresistance to cardiovascular devices without compromising bulk mechanical properties. Poly(ethylene glycol)-based hydrogels provide antifouling properties to limit acute thromobosis and incorporation of adhesive ligands can be used to promote endothelialization. However, conventional PEG-based hydrogels at stiffnesses that promote cell attachment can be brittle and prone to damage in a surgical setting, limiting their utility in clinical applications. In this work, we developed a durable hydrogel coating using in

PEG-fibrin conjugates: the PEG impact on the polymerization dynamics.

Fibrin and its modifications, particularly those with functionalized polyethylene glycol (PEG), remain highly attractive as a biomaterial in drug delivery and regenerative medicine. Despite the extensive knowledge of fibrinogenesis, there is little information on the processes occurring after its modification. Previously, we found structural differences between native fibrin and its conjugates with PEG that allows us to hypothesize that a combination of methods such as terahertz (THz) pulsed spectroscopy and rheology may contribute to the characterization of gelation and reveal the effect of P

Polyethylene glycol hydrogel coatings for protection of electroactive bacteria against chemical shocks.

Loss of bioelectrochemical activity in low resource environments or from chemical toxin exposure is a significant limitation in microbial electrochemical cells (MxCs), necessitating the development of materials that can stabilize and protect electroactive biofilms. Here, polyethylene glycol (PEG) hydrogels were designed as protective coatings over anodic biofilms, and the effect of the hydrogel coatings on biofilm viability under oligotrophic conditions and ammonia-N (NH4+-N) shocks was investigated. Hydrogel deposition occurred through polymerization of PEG divinyl sulfone and PEG tetrathiol

Osteoimmune regulation underlies oral implant osseointegration and its perturbation.

In the field of biomaterials, an endosseous implant is now recognized as an osteoimmunomodulatory but not bioinert biomaterial. Scientific advances in bone cell biology and in immunology have revealed a close relationship between the bone and immune systems resulting in a field of science called osteoimmunology. These discoveries have allowed for a novel interpretation of osseointegration as representing an osteoimmune reaction rather than a classic bone healing response, in which the activation state of macrophages ((M1-M2 polarization) appears to play a critical role. Through this viewpoint,

In-Vivo fluorescent nanosensor implants based on hydrogel-encapsulation: investigating the inflammation and the foreign-body response.

Nanotechnology-enabled sensors or nanosensors are emerging as promising new tools for various in-vivo life science applications such as biosensing, components of delivery systems, and probes for spatial bioimaging. However, as with a wide range of synthetic biomaterials, tissue responses have been observed depending on cell types and various nanocomponent properties. The tissue response is critical for determining the acute and long term health of the organism and the functional lifetime of the material in-vivo. While nanomaterial properties can contribute significantly to the tissue response,

Application of tissue engineering techniques in tracheal repair: a bibliometric study.

Transplantation of tissue-engineered trachea is an effective treatment for long-segment tracheal injury. This technology avoids problems associated with a lack of donor resources and immune rejection, generating an artificial trachea with good biocompatibility. To our knowledge, a systematic summary of basic and clinical research on tissue-engineered trachea in the last 20 years has not been conducted. Here, we analyzed the development trends of tissue-engineered trachea research by bibliometric means and outlined the future perspectives in this field. The Web of Science portal was selected as
