BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: India contributes to one-third of the global burden of low birth weight (LBW) neonates, which is associated with increased risk of mortality and adverse consequences on long-term health. Factors leading to LBW are multidimensional and maternal short stature is an important component with an inter-generational effect. On the contrary gestational weight gain (GWG) shows an independent positive influence on birth weight. The aim of the present study therefore was to determine the influence of GWG on birth weight in short pregnant women.

INTRODUCTION: High and low birth weight (BW) to placental weight (PW) ratios (BW/PW) have been proposed as markers of placental malfunction. We studied the association of clinical outcome and placental histopathology lesions with BW/PW ratios.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: During the period between 2008 and 2013, placentas from deliveries at gestational age (GA) ≥37 weeks, including both complicated and uncomplicated pregnancies, were sent for histopathology evaluation. Maternal and labor characteristics and pathological reports of the high BW/PW ratio group (>90th), normal BW/PW ratio group (10-90)…

We conducted a retrospective study to determine the association between maternal body mass index and pregnancy weight gain with low birth weight newborns (LBWN) at Phrapokklao Hospital in eastern Thailand. We evaluated the files of 2,012 women who delivered at the hospital. Data obtained from the charts were parity, maternal age, body mass index (BMI), prepregnancy weight, weight gained during pregnancy, gestational age, hematocrit level, referral status, place of residence, fetal presentation, completion of antenatal care visits and maternal HIV infection. Sixty-five point two percent of subj…

Improving survival of extremely low birthweight (< 1000 g) preterm infants opens the practical issues of their postnatal nutrition and growth. The authors studied nutrition and weight gain in 16 extremely low birthweight preterm infants (birthweight: 890 +/- 22 g, gestational age: 28.0 +/- 0.2 week, mean +/- SEM) during the first 12 weeks of life. Milk of the mother, or fortified pooled human milk or preterm infant formula was fed. The preterm infants approximated their birthweight by the end of the 3rd week of life (21st day: 866 +/- 29 g). Body weight expressed as per cent of birthweight was

OBJECTIVE: We aimed to investigate fetal somatometric changes and neonatal birth weight (NBW) in babies of women with overweight and grade I-III obesity compared to controls with normal weight.
METHODS: We conducted a retrospective cohort study at a Mexican hospital between 2021 and 2023 in otherwise healthy pregnant women with different baseline body mass index (BMI) classifications: normal weight, overweight, grade I obesity, and grade II-III obesity. We used analysis of variance and Cohen's d to compare the area under the curve (AUC) of fetal biometric parameters, as well as NBW. Gestation…

WHAT IS ALREADY KNOWN ABOUT THIS TOPIC?: Elevated gestational weight gain (GWG) during pregnancy among women diagnosed with gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) is correlated with an increased instance of large for gestational age (LGA) and macrosomia. However, it remains uncertain whether managing weekly GWG following a GDM diagnosis positively impacts fetal birth weight.
WHAT IS ADDED BY THIS REPORT?: Our study found that GWG following GDM diagnosis correlates positively with the risk of LGA and macrosomia among all body mass index (BMI) subgroups, especially for overweight and obese women.

BACKGROUND: The relationship between gestational weight gain (GWG) and childhood growth remains controversial. An examination on whether infant feeding practices mediate this relationship may improve our understanding of it.
METHODS: We investigated whether the relationships among GWG, birth weight and childhood anthropometrics were mediated through infant feeding practices (breastfeeding duration and age at introduction of solid foods) in a cross-sectional multiethnic study of 1387 mothers and their children aged 0-5.9 years in the USA (2011-2012). Child anthropometrics included age-specific…

Multiple systemic risk factors are associated with retinopathy of prematurity (ROP). We analyzed the role of low weight gain (WG) to predict the development of stage 3+ ROP among preterm infants. This study included 126 newborns with birth weight ≤1500 g and gestational age <32 weeks. Preterm newborn infants were divided into two groups according to severity of ROP as: preterm infants without ROP or mild ROP (Group 1) and preterm infants with stage 3+ ROP (Group 2). WG and WG proportion were measured at completed 4 and 6 weeks of life. The patients under the cut-off point according to receiver…

OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the associations between birth weight (BW), infancy, and childhood weight gain and adult body composition.
METHODS: Subjects included participants of five birth cohort studies from low and middle income nations (Brazil, Guatemala, India, Philippines, and South Africa; n = 3432). We modeled adult body composition as a function of BW and conditional weight gain (CW), representing changes in weight trajectory relative to peers, in three age intervals (0-12 months, 12-24 months, 24 months-mid childhood).
RESULTS: In 34 of 36 site- and sex-specific models, regression coeff…

BACKGROUND: Because pregnant African American women and teens are at risk of low birth weight, they are frequently counseled to strive for gestational weight gains at the upper limits of the Institute of Medicine's recommended ranges.
OBJECTIVE: The objective was to examine whether such weight gains improve birth outcomes in a cohort of disadvantaged African American adolescents of low (<19.8), average (> or =19.8 to < or =26.0), or high (>26) prepregnancy body mass index (BMI; in kg/m2).
DESIGN: Data were extracted from the medical charts of 1120 African American adolescents who received pr…

BACKGROUND: Group prenatal care is a promising strategy to improve perinatal outcomes. Research in larger more diverse populations with attention to adherence is needed to inform clinical practice recommendations. We examined the impact of group prenatal care on preterm birth and low birth weight in a large metropolitan hospital, accounting for patient adherence, over an 8.5-year period.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: We analyzed data from 9,348 pregnant women with a live, singleton birth who received group (CenteringPregnancy or Expect With Me) or individual prenatal care at Vanderbilt University Me…

BACKGROUND: The aim of the study was to evaluate whether there is any association between intrauterine growth and later lung function or bronchial reactivity in early adulthood in line with Barker's hypothesis.
METHODS: Nineteen twin pairs with disproportionate intrauterine growth pattern were followed up from birth: either one of the pairs had intrauterine growth retardation (birth weight <2 SD) or the within-pair birth weight difference was >1.3 SD. Flow-volume spirometry, followed by isocapnic hyperventilation of cold air, was performed at the ages of 8-16 and 14-22 years in 1993 and 1999.…

BACKGROUND: In developing countries, low birth weight (LBW) children are often not vaccinated with Calmette-Guérin bacillus (BCG) at birth. Recent studies have suggested that BCG may have a nonspecific beneficial effect on infant mortality. We evaluated the consequences of not vaccinating LBW children at birth in Guinea-Bissau.
METHODS: Between 1989 and 1999, 7138 children born at the central hospital had a birth weight registered. We assessed BCG coverage until 3 years of age. Data on tuberculin skin test (TST) for 297 children and BCG scar for 1319 children in the study population were rean…

Neonatal birth weight is a crucial indicator of intrauterine growth and development with important implications for child development and adult health. The birth weight of a newborn is closely linked to the nutrition and health of the mother during pregnancy as well as genetic factors. Therefore, assessing the metabolic status of the fetus in utero is greatly significant for understanding the mechanisms responsible for abnormal birth weight. While previous studies often analyzed the impact of maternal metabolism on fetal development using umbilical cord blood from pregnant women, such blood ma…

This study aimed to analyze major predictors of adverse birth outcomes in very low birth weight (VLBW) infants including particulate matter concentration (PM10), using machine learning and the national prospective cohort. Data consisted of 10,423 VLBW infants from the Korean Neonatal Network database during January 2013-December 2017. Five adverse birth outcomes were considered as the dependent variables, i.e., gestational age less than 28 weeks, gestational age less than 26 weeks, birth weight less than 1000 g, birth weight less than 750 g and small-for-gestational age. Thirty-three predictor…

BACKGROUND: Associations between birth weight (BW) and adult lung function have been inconsistent and limited to early adulthood. We aimed to study this association in two population-based cohorts and explore if BW, adjusted for gestational age, predicts adult lung function. We also tested adult lung function impairment according to the mis-match hypothesis-small babies growing big as adults.
METHODS: We included 3495 individuals (aged 46.4 ± 5.4 years) from the Malmo Preventive Project (MPP), Sweden, born between 1921 and 1949, and 1401 young to middle-aged individuals (aged 28.6 ± 6.7 years…
