BACKGROUND: Bisphenol A (BPA) is a common monomer in polycarbonate plastics and epoxy resins that can migrate into food and water under extreme conditions, posing significant health risks including endocrine disruption, infertility, and metabolic disorders. Conventional detection techniques such as HPLC, HPLC-MS, and ELISA offer high sensitivity but suffer from costly instrumentation, complex pretreatment, and limited field applicability. Aptamer-based biosensors provide an attractive alternative due to their high specificity, low cost, and ease of use. Dual-mode platforms integrating colorime

Endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs) are natural or synthetic substances that are able to interfere with hormonal systems and alter their physiological signaling. EDCs have been recognized as a public health issue due to their widespread use, environmental persistence and the potential levels of long-term exposure with implications in multiple pathological conditions. Their reported adverse effects pose critical concerns about their use, warranting their strict regulation. This is the case of bisphenol A (BPA), a well-known EDC whose tolerable daily intake (TDI) was re-evaluated in 2023 by th

Bisphenol S (BPS) exposure has been shown to induce osteopathies such as osteoporosis, yet the underlying mechanisms remain poorly understood. To comprehensively evaluate the toxic effects and mechanisms of BPS on osteoblast differentiation and bone development, an integrated approach combining the hFOB1.19 human osteoblast cell line (in vitro) and zebrafish larvae (in vivo) were utilized. In hFOB1.19 cells, exposure to BPS (0, 1, 5, 10 and 50 µM) for 96 h (n = 3-4 replicates) disrupted osteogenic differentiation by downregulating key markers (RUNX2 and OPG) and induced mitochondrial dysfuncti

The increasing usage of bisphenol S (BPS) analogs as novel alternatives to bisphenol A (BPA) or BPS results in widespread exposure risks. In contrast to BPS, BPS analog-induced perturbations in lipid metabolism are largely unknown. Our study aimed to investigate the interactions of nine novel BPS analogs with peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor γ (PPARγ) and their impacts on 3T3-L1 adipogenesis. BPS and its analogs were found to have varying binding affinities to the PPARγ ligand-binding domain, and five of the BPS analogs were identified as novel PPARγ agonists as evidenced by increase

Bisphenol A (BPA), a widespread environmental contaminant, poses concerns due to its disruptive effects on physiological functions of the uterine endometrium. In contrast, melatonin (MT) and Resveratrol (RSV) are under scrutiny for their potential protective roles against BPA-induced damage. For the efficacy and ethical concerns in the animal test, endometrial organoids, three-dimensional models mimicking endometrium, serve as crucial tools for unraveling the impact of environmental factors on reproductive health. This study aimed to comprehensively characterize the morphological, molecular an

Recent scientific results indicate that diet is the primary source of exposure to endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs) due to their use in food processing, pesticides, fertilizers, and migration from packaging to food, particularly in plastic or canned foods. Although EDCs are not listed on nutrition labels, their migration from packaging to food could inadvertently lead to food contamination, affecting individuals by inhalation, ingestion, and direct contact. The aim of our narrative review is to investigate the role of phthalates and bisphenol A (BPA) in foods, assessing their risks for pre

Bisphenol AF (BPAF) is degraded through the ultrasound-assisted in situ generation and activation of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) by the copper(II) catalysed oxidation of hydroxylamine (NH2OH) with dioxygen (O2). Compared to added H2O2, in situ generated H2O2 significantly improves the degradation of BPAF from 46.7% to 94.8% in ∼15 min. The reaction follows a pseudo-first-order kinetic model. This study examines the influence of solution pH, anions, humic acid, and different concentrations of the reactants on BPAF degradation. Mass spectrometry was used to identify the BPAF degradation products, a

Bisphenols, as common industrial raw materials, are widely used in food packaging such as plastics. However, their migration and residue may affect the hormone secretion of the human body and then lead to health problems. Therefore, a low-cost, rapid and simple detection method that can simultaneously detect multiple bisphenols is very necessary. In this work, two types of manganese single-atom nanozymes with excellent peroxidase-like activity were synthesized with graphyne as a support. A high-throughput colorimetric sensor array was constructed using three types of nanozymes (Mn-GY, Mn-GY-2N…

Microplastics (MPs) accumulate in tissues, including kidney tissue, while Bisphenol A (BPA) is a plasticizer of particular concern. At present, the combined effects of MPs and BPA are unexplored in human renal cells. Therefore, we exposed a proximal tubular cell line (PTECs) to polyethylene (PE)-MPs and BPA, both separately and in combination. When co-exposed, cells showed a significantly reduced cell viability (MTT test) and a pronounced pro-oxidant (MDA levels, NRF2 and NOX4 expression by Western blot) and pro-inflammatory response (IL1β, CCL/CCR2 and CCL/CCR5 mRNAs by RT-PCR), compared to t

Thyroid hormones play a crucial role in numerous physiological processes, including reproduction. Bisphenol S (BPS) is a structural analog of Bisphenol A known for its toxic effects. Interference of this substitute with normal thyroid function has been described. To investigate the effect of thyroid disruption on ovarian development following maternal exposure to BPS, female rats were exposed, daily, to either AT 1-850 (a thyroid hormone receptor antagonist) (10 nmol/rat) or BPS (0.2 mg/kg) during gestation and lactation. The effects on reproductive outcome, offspring development, histological

The essential factor of catalytic ozonation technology relies on an efficient and stable catalyst. The construction of highly dispersed active sites on heterogeneous catalysts is an ideal strategy to combine the merits of homogeneous and heterogeneous catalysis with high activity and stability. Herein, an iron-containing mesoporous silica material (Fe-SBA15) with sufficient iron site exposure and enhanced intrinsic activity of active sites was employed to activate ozone for bisphenol A (BPA) degradation. Approximately 100% of BPA and 36.6% of total organic carbon (TOC) removal were realized by

Bisphenol B (BPB, 2,2-bis(4-hydroxyphenyl) butane), as a substitute for bisphenol A, has been widely detected in the environment and become a potential threat to environmental health. This work found that silver oxide nanoparticles (Ag2O) could greatly promote the removal of BPB by ferrate (Fe(VI)). With the presence of 463 mg/L Ag2O, the amount of Fe(VI) required for the complete removal of 10 μM BPB will be reduced by 70%. Meanwhile, the recyclability and stability of Ag2O have been verified by recycling experiments. The characterization results and in situ electrochemical analyses showed th
