Back to normality? Respiratory viruses, Mycoplasma pneumoniae, Chlamydophila pneumoniae, and Bordetella pertussis trends: local epidemiological update after the COVID-19 storm.

BACKGROUND: The COVID-19 pandemic deeply impacted the epidemiology of respiratory viruses and bacteria, including Mycoplasma pneumoniae (MP), Chlamydophila pneumoniae (CP), and Bordetella pertussis (BP). We have retrospectively examined the circulation patterns of major non-culturable respiratory pathogens that cause acute respiratory infections (ARIs) over four years (2021-2024), encompassing both the pandemic and post-pandemic phases. METHODS: The study was conducted in the five hospitals of the Friuli Venezia Giulia region, in northeastern Italy from January 2021 to December 2024. A total

Epidemiology of respiratory syncytial virus within a New South Wales-based multi-centre health district between 2018 and 2024 in Australia.

Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) epidemiology in Australia is unclear given recent advances in diagnostic testing, COVID-19 interventions, and under-recognition in older adults. Data are needed to inform new RSV vaccine use. We analysed laboratory data from all viral respiratory reverse transcription quantitative polymerase chain reaction (RT-qPCR) diagnostic tests conducted at New South Wales (NSW) Health Pathology in the South Eastern Sydney and Illawarra Health Service from 2018 to 2024. Panel and descriptive analyses were used to report annual RSV testing and detection by age group, care

Retrospective observational study of the influence of the COVID-19 outbreak on infants' hospitalisation for acute bronchiolitis.

OBJECTIVES: Acute bronchiolitis is a major public health issue with high number of infants hospitalised worldwide each year. In France, hospitalisations mostly occur between October and March and peak in December. A reduction of emergency visits for bronchiolitis has been observed at onset of the COVID-19 outbreak. We aimed to assess the pandemic effects on the hospitalisations for bronchiolitis during the 2020-2021 winter (COVID-19 period) compared with three previous winters (pre-COVID-19). DESIGN: Retrospective, observational and cross-sectional study. SETTING: Tertiary university paediat

Radiological manifestation of familial acute necrotizing encephalopathy with RANBP2 mutation in a Far-East Asian family: Case report.

RATIONALE: Acute necrotizing encephalopathy (ANE) is a specific type of encephalopathy usually followed by febrile infection. It has an aggressive clinical course; however, it usually does not recur after recovery in cases of spontaneous ANE. Nevertheless, there are several studies reporting recurrences in familial ANE with RAN-binding protein 2 (RANBP2) mutation. There are few cases of familial ANE with RANBP2 mutation in Asian populations. PATIENTS CONCERNS: A 21-month-old Korean boy who was previously healthy, presented with seizure following parainfluenza - a virus and bocavirus infection

Etiology of Coinfections in Children with Influenza during 2015/16 Winter Season in Nepal.

Acute respiratory infections (ARIs) are one of the major public health problems in developing countries like Nepal. Besides the influenza, several other pathogens are responsible for acute respiratory infection in children. Etiology of infections is poorly characterized at the course of clinical management, and hence empirical antimicrobial agents are used. The objective of this study was to characterize the influenza and other respiratory pathogens by real-time PCR assay. A total of 175 throat swab specimens of influenza-positive cases collected at National Influenza Center, Nepal, during the

Lactate dehydrogenase as a marker of nasopharyngeal inflammatory injury during viral upper respiratory infection: implications for acute otitis media.

BACKGROUND: Acute otitis media (AOM) is a frequent complication of viral upper respiratory tract infection (URI). We hypothesized that the severity of nasopharyngeal cellular injury during URI, as measured by lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) concentrations in nasopharyngeal secretions (NPSs), is related to AOM complication. METHODS: LDH concentrations were determined in NPS samples (n = 594) that were collected at the initial visit for URI from 183 children who were followed for the development of AOM. A subset of NPS samples (n = 134) was analyzed for interleukin (IL)-1β, IL-6, and tumor necrosis

Identification of novel porcine and bovine parvoviruses closely related to human parvovirus 4.

Human parvovirus 4 (PARV4), a recently discovered parvovirus found exclusively in human plasma and liver tissue, was considered phylogenetically distinct from other parvoviruses. Here, we report the discovery of two novel parvoviruses closely related to PARV4, porcine hokovirus (PHoV) and bovine hokovirus (BHoV), from porcine and bovine samples in Hong Kong. Their nearly full-length sequences were also analysed. PARV4-like viruses were detected by PCR among 44.4 % (148/333) of porcine samples (including lymph nodes, liver, serum, nasopharyngeal and faecal samples), 13 % (4/32) of bovine spleen

Circulation of influenza viruses in the dog population in Kazakhstan (2023-2024).

BACKGROUND: Dogs in close contact with humans can serve as a source of potentially dangerous reassortant influenza viruses (IVs) with zoonotic potential. The dog's body can serve as a vessel for the emergence of new IVs. These new viruses can become a source of infection for other animals and humans. The potential for zoonotic transmission of IVs from dogs to humans poses a public health risk. AIM: Study of the circulation of IVs in the dog population in Almaty, Kazakhstan. METHODS: Biosamples (oropharyngeal swabs and blood serum) from dogs were collected from veterinary clinics in Almaty in

Prevalence of SARS-COV-2 and other respiratory pathogens among a Jordanian subpopulation during Delta-to-Omicron transition: Winter 2021/2022.

Acute respiratory tract infections (ARTIs) during the winter months are associated with higher morbidity and mortality compared to other seasons of the year, with children below five, elderly, and immunocompromised patients being the most susceptible. Influenza A and B viruses, rhinovirus, coronaviruses, respiratory syncytial virus, adenovirus, and parainfluenza viruses, are the most frequently identified causes of viral ARTIs. In addition, the emergence of SARS-CoV-2 in 2019 provided an additional viral cause of ARTIs. The aim of this study was to provide an overview of the epidemiological st
