Mercury levels measured in urine, hair, and saliva of 245 German children (8-10 years old) are reported. Mercury concentrations in urine ranged between <0.1 and 5.3 microg/l [geometric mean (GM) 0.26 microg/l or 0.25 microg/g creatinine; median for both, 0.22 in microg/l and microg/g, respectively]. Using multiple linear regression analysis, two predictors have been found accounting for 25.3% of the variance of mercury levels in urine: the number of teeth with amalgam fillings (23.2%) and the number of defective amalgam fillings (2.1%). PATIENTS AND METHODS: We summarized information for 4 African-American patients diagnosed during life with iron overload not explainable by alcohol, blood transfusions, or ineffective erythropoiesis. We reviewed liver specimens and hospital records of 326 unselected adult African Americans who were autopsied, assessing Prussian blue-stained sections for hepatocellular iron and measuring iron quantitatively in specimens that stained positively.

Epidemiological modelling can be a useful tool for the evaluation of parasite control strategies. An age-structured epidemiological model of intestinal helminth dynamics is developed. We describe a compartmental pharmacokinetic model for methyl mercury and its metabolite mercuric mercury in humans. A tracer dose of 203Hg-labeled methyl mercury was administered iv to seven healthy young adult male volunteers. Pleural calcifications are described in 122 of 268 (45.5%) inhabitants of four villages (Metsovo, Anilio, Milea, and Votonosi) in a small area of northwestern Greece (total population about 5000). Gastrointestinal nematodes cause serious economic losses in sheep production systems. To determine the prevalence and risk factors associated with these parasites, a study was conducted on 595 sheep in Córdoba, Colombia. In a Phase I-II study, half-body radiotherapy was used to treat 14 dogs with multicentric lymphoma. Using this technique, a radiation dose of 7 Gray (Gy) was delivered to one half of the body in a single exposure. The other half of the body was treated approximately 28 days later. OBJECTIVE: To determine whether the temporal onset of visual phenomena distinguishes Lewy body disease (LBD) from Alzheimer's disease (AD), and to characterize the extent Lewy bodies and neurofibrillary tangles are associated with these clinical features.
METHODS: Consecutive cases of autopsy-confirmed LBD (n = 41), AD (n = 70), and AD with amygdala-predominant Lewy bodies (AD-ALB) (n = 14) with a documented clinical history of dementia were included. We mailed questionnaires to next-of-kin asking about symptoms during life. Lewy pathology and neurofibrillary tangle pathology were assessed.
