Association between Body Composition Characteristics and Chronic Low Back Pain in High-School Baseball Players: A Retrospective Study.

BACKGROUND: Chronic low back pain (CLBP) is common among adolescent athletes, particularly baseball players; however, its association with body composition remains unclear. PURPOSE: To investigate the relationship between body composition parameters and the presence of CLBP in high-school baseball players. STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective cohort study. METHODS: Male high-school baseball players were recruited and divided into the CLBP and non-CLBP groups. CLBP was defined as low back pain rated ≥3 on the numerical rating scale (NRS) and lasting >12 weeks. Body composition was measured using bioe

Many-body interactions resolve halide distribution at the air/water interface.

Whether dissolved ions approach or avoid the air/water interface remains unsettled, despite its importance for atmospheric and interfacial chemistry. Here we show, using chemically accurate data-driven many-body models and a controlled hierarchy of interaction descriptions, that the intrinsic surface propensity of halide ions depends critically on short-range many-body interactions beyond classical polarization. A conventional polarizable model predicts strong iodide adsorption and weaker stabilization of bromide and chloride. When short-range two- and three-body quantum-mechanical interaction

Effect of Creatine Supplementation on Body Composition in Cancer Patients: A Systematic Review.

Creatine is a naturally occurring compound stored in muscles, obtainable through diet and supplementation, known to enhance strength, exercise capacity, and recovery. Recent research suggests it may aid in treating some chronic diseases. This review analyzed the effects of creatine supplementation (CrS) on body composition in cancer patients or survivors. Following PRISMA guidelines, five databases were searched for studies up to September 12, reviewing seven articles with 463 participants (316 men, 147 women; average age 62.95 years). Five studies assessed CrS effects on body weight: three fo

Quantum Scars and Regular Eigenstates in a Chaotic Spinor Condensate.

Quantum many-body scars consist of a few low-entropy eigenstates in an otherwise chaotic many-body spectrum, and can weakly break ergodicity resulting in robust oscillatory dynamics. The notion of quantum many-body scars follows the original single-particle scars introduced within the context of quantum billiards, where scarring manifests in the form of a quantum eigenstate concentrating around an underlying classical unstable periodic orbit. A direct connection between these notions remains an outstanding problem. Here, we study a many-body spinor condensate that, owing to its collective inte

Profiles of body image concerns and their associations with disordered eating behaviors.

Although body image concerns (BIC) are recognized as a core driver in the development of disordered eating behaviors, the combined role of various types of BIC remains underexamined. This study relied on latent profile analysis to identify the main configurations of self-reported BIC (i.e., body checking and avoidance, perceived physical appearance, and fear of negative appearance evaluation) observed in a sample of 419 French-Canadian individuals (Mage = 26.59, SDage = 9.23). The role of body mass index, sex, and age on profile membership was also examined, as well as the relation between pro

HSP47 levels determine the degree of body adiposity.

Adiposity varies among individuals with the influence of diverse physiological, pathological, environmental, hormonal, and genetic factors, but a unified molecular basis remains elusive. Here, we identify HSP47, a collagen-specific chaperone, as a key determinant of body adiposity. HSP47 expression is abundant in adipose tissue; increased with feeding, overeating, and obesity; decreased with fasting, exercise, calorie restriction, bariatric surgery, and cachexia; and correlated with fat mass, BMI, waist, and hip circumferences. Insulin and glucocorticoids, respectively, up- and down-regulate H

Physical correlates of human-like softness elicit high tactile pleasantness.

Touching an object can elicit affective sensations. Because these sensations are critical for social interaction, tactile preferences may be adapted to the characteristics of the human body. We have previously shown that compliance, a physical correlate of softness, increased the tactile pleasantness of a deformable surface. However, the extent to which object compliance similar to the human body elicits tactile pleasantness remains unknown. We addressed this question by using a wide range of compliances and by measuring the distribution of compliance of human body parts. The participants nume

Gene body methylation facilitates the transcription of CTSG via antisense lncRNA AL136018.1 in dermatomyositic myoideum.

Dermatomyositis (DM) is characterized as a chronic autoimmune disorder with multiple organ involvement. Our previous study has revealed that Cathepsin G (CTSG) highly expressed in dermatomyositic in vivo is regulated by DNMT3a through DNA methylation of 5'-C-phosphate-G-3' loci at exons and introns. However, the mechanism of gene body methylation on regulating CTSG transcription remains unknown. In this study, we studied quadriceps femoris tissues of six DM patients, and observed that antisense long noncoding RNA AL136018.1 contiguous to CTSG was highly expressed in skeletal muscle tissues of

Multisensory body representation in autoimmune diseases.

Body representation has been linked to the processing and integration of multisensory signals. An outstanding example of the pivotal role played by multisensory mechanisms in body representation is the Rubber Hand Illusion (RHI). In this paradigm, multisensory stimulation induces a sense of ownership over a fake limb. Previous work has shown high interindividual differences in the susceptibility to the RHI. The origin of this variability remains largely unknown. Given the tight and bidirectional communication between the brain and the immune system, we predicted that the origin of this variabi

A high-precision force plate method for long-term mass monitoring of fruit flies under controlled temperature and humidity.

Long-term monitoring of body mass in small insects provides critical insights into physiological regulation, metabolism, and behaviour, yet remains technically challenging owing to their extremely low mass and sensitivity to environmental fluctuations. Conventional microbalances and load cells offer high sensitivity but may have limitations in long-term stability or compatibility with controlled environmental conditions. Here, we present an optical, high-precision, force plate-based method that enables continuous, long-term monitoring of body mass in individual fruit flies under controlled tem

Walking in blood, running for life: The visceral dialectics of body handling.

This study aimed to explore the visceral and embodied experiences of body handlers, examining how the physical body registers, processes, and resists traumatic exposure. Utilizing Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis, a secondary analysis was conducted on narratives from twenty Jewish male IDF reservists tasked with identifying and processing human remains following the October 7th attack. Drawing on Foucault's metaphor of the mirror, the findings reveal a dialectical struggle between two somatic states: a "utopian" identification, where the self is pulled into the "there" of death through

HMGA2 regulates fear and growth: Canine GWAS and functional evidence.

Fear is an evolutionarily conserved survival mechanism. Fear behavior is strongly correlated with body size in dogs, the genetic basis of fear regulation independent of size-related traits remains unclear. Through cross-breed genome-wide association analysis, we identified association between HMGA2 gene and fear traits. Our functional validation revealed that viral overexpression of Hmga2 in the mouse basolateral amygdala attenuated fear memory formation independent of body weight, while Hmga2 knockout (KO) mice exhibited enhanced fear memory. Transcriptomic analyses linked Hmga2 to modulation

The contribution of cutaneous thermal signals to bodily self-awareness.

Thermosensory signals may contribute to the sense of body ownership, but their role remains highly debated. We test this assumption within the framework of pathological body ownership, hypothesising that skin temperature and thermoception differ between right-hemisphere stroke patients with and without Disturbed Sensation of Ownership (DSO) for the contralesional plegic upper limb. Patients with DSO exhibit lower basal hand temperatures bilaterally and impaired perception of cold and warm stimuli. Lesion mapping reveals associations in the right Rolandic Operculum and Insula, with these region

Large-scale ocean connectivity and planktonic body size.

Global patterns of planktonic diversity are mainly determined by the dispersal of propagules with ocean currents. However, the role that abundance and body size play in determining spatial patterns of diversity remains unclear. Here we analyse spatial community structure - β-diversity - for several planktonic and nektonic organisms from prokaryotes to small mesopelagic fishes collected during the Malaspina 2010 Expedition. β-diversity was compared to surface ocean transit times derived from a global circulation model, revealing a significant negative relationship that is stronger than environm

Dismemberment and disarticulation: A forensic anthropological approach.

The dismemberment of a corpse is fairly rare in forensic medicine. It is usually performed with different types of sharp tools and used as a method of concealing the body and thus erasing proof of murder. In this context, the disarticulation of body parts is an even rarer event. The authors present the analysis of six dismemberment cases (well-preserved corpses or skeletonized remains with clear signs of dismemberment), arising from different contexts and in which different types of sharp tools were used. Two cases in particular showed peculiar features where separation of the forearms and lim

Carotid body overactivity induces respiratory neurone channelopathy contributing to neurogenic hypertension.

Why sympathetic activity rises in neurogenic hypertension remains unknown. It has been postulated that changes in the electrical excitability of medullary pre-sympathetic neurones are the main causal mechanism for the development of sympathetic overactivity in experimental hypertension. Here we review recent data suggesting that enhanced sympathetic activity in neurogenic hypertension is, at least in part, dependent on alterations in the electrical excitability of medullary respiratory neurones and their central modulation of sympatho-excitatory networks. We also present results showing a crit

The benefit of routine thoracic, abdominal, and pelvic computed tomography to evaluate trauma patients with closed head injuries.

BACKGROUND: The evaluation of multitrauma patients for blunt truncal injuries remains open for debate. We sought to evaluate the role of routine computed tomography (CT) of the chest, abdomen, and pelvis as a screening tool for patients already undergoing cranial CT studies. METHODS: Charts of blunt trauma patients admitted from June 2000 to June 2001 were reviewed for demographics, Glascow Coma Scale (GCS), physical and radiological findings, and length of stay. RESULTS: Our study found that 38% of patients undergoing cranial CT scanning had a unexpected finding on body scans. Changes were
