To identify factors affecting the successful bridge to transplantation, experience with 32 recipients of the Jarvik-7 artificial heart was reviewed. Between patients with and without a successful bridge, there were no significant differences in preoperative hepatorenal function or postoperative hemodynamics, but there were significant differences in body size. Serum gold levels were monitored in 66 children with juvenile rheumatoid arthritis, treated with different i.m. dosage schedules of sodium aurothiomalate (Myocrisin, Pharma Rhodia). The ages of the children varied from 1 to 15 years. Gold serum levels in children were related to the dose of Myocrisin calculated per kg of body weight or per square metre of body surface area. We investigated the epidemiology, outcomes, and costs of burn patients caused by explosion accident in Southwest China to explore more effective prevention and treatment strategies. Sunburn, thermal, and chemical injuries to the skin are common in the United States and worldwide. Initial management is determined by type and extent of injury with special care to early management of airway, breathing, and circulation. Fluid management has typically been guided by the Parkland formula, whereas some experts now question this. Each type of skin injury has its own pathophysiology and resultant complications. All primary care physicians should have at least a basic knowledge of management of acute and chronic skin injuries.

We examined the relationship between blood volume, mean haemoglobin maintained and transfusion requirement in an extensive series (166 cases) of uniformly treated patients with homozygous beta-thalassaemia.
