Three-dimensional finite element analysis of bracketless clear aligner expansion with different buccal bone plate thicknesses.

OBJECTIVES: The thickness of the buccal cortical plate of maxillary posterior teeth limits the safe range of transverse expansion with bracketless clear aligners. METHODS: This retrospective study analyzed cone-beam CT data from 100 adults with normal occlusion. Buccal bone plate thickness was measured at four sites (F1-F4: 3, 6, 8 mm apical to cemento-enamel junction and root apex) for maxillary first/second premolars (PM1, PM2) and first/second molars (M1, M2). Based on PM1 thickness at F1 (mean ± SD), three maxillary models with thin (0.42 mm), medium (0.72 mm), and thick (1.02 mm) buccal

Enhancing Biodegradable Bone Plate Performance: Stereocomplex Polylactic Acid for Improved Mechanical Properties and Near-Infrared Transparency.

The use of biodegradable materials in bone plates offers remarkable advantages; however, their application in bone fixation is limited by their brittleness. Moreover, treatments tailored to patient conditions are needed in orthopedics. In this study, bone plates were fabricated with stereocomplex polylactic acid (scPLA) and the effects of poly(d-lactic acid) molecular weight and scPLA blending ratios were analyzed. Although modulus values of poly(l-lactic acid) (PLLA) and scPLA were similar, strain resistance improved at higher scPLA proportions. The enhanced elongation was owing to the presen…

Does helical plating for proximal humeral shaft fractures benefit bone healing? - an in silico analysis in fracture healing.

OBJECTIVES: Helical plating is an established alternative to straight plating for humeral shaft fractures in order to prevent iatrogenic radial nerve damage. However, a previous biomechanical investigation indicated differences in fracture healing for helical plating due to a potential shift of interfragmentary movements compared to straight plating. Therefore, fracture healing simulations were performed to assess any differences in bone healing of helical vs. straight plating. METHODS: A systematic workflow for fracture healing analytics was created, covering essential steps of bone modellin

Histone deacetylase 4 in limb mesenchyme is essential for chondrocyte proliferation, growth plate maintenance and proper bone formation.

PURPOSE/AIM: Dysregulation of well-ordered chondrocyte proliferation and differentiation leads to distorted architecture of the growth plate, resulting in skeletal dysplasia with impaired longitudinal bone growth. Histone deacetylase 4 (HDAC4) is essential for chondrocyte hypertrophy and endochondral bone formation, but its role in postnatal bone development remains unexplored due to early lethality in Hdac4-ablated mice. Furthermore, a direct in vivo effect of Hdac4 on mesenchymal cell specification and bone development has not been investigated. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We generated Prx1-Cre;

Locking Compression Plate as a Reduction Tool in Tibial Shaft Nailing for Diaphyseal Segmental Bone Defects: Technical Considerations.

The management of segmental bone defects of the tibial shaft remains a challenging endeavor for orthopedic surgeons. These defects are usually the result of high energy fractures and are frequently associated with high nonunion and infection rates. Achieving appropriate alignment during intramedullary nailing is crucial and often presents technical hurdles. The scope of this paper is to describe and discuss the intraoperative use of a provisional locking plate in achieving satisfactory reduction in the setting of a large tibial shaft bone defect. This technique presents distinct advantages for

Biomechanical analysis of plate versus K-wire fixation for metacarpal shaft fractures with wedge-shaped bone defects.

BACKGROUND: Metacarpal shaft fracture is a common type of hand fracture. Numerous studies have explored fixing transverse fractures in the midshaft of the metacarpal bone. However, this section of the metacarpal bone is often susceptible to high-energy injury, resulting in comminuted fracture or bone loss. In such cases, wedge-shaped bone defects can develop in the metacarpal shaft, increasing the difficulty of performing fracture fixation. Notably, the research on this type of fracture fixation is limited. This study compared the abilities of four fixation methods to fix metacarpal shaft frac

Cortical bone plate properties assessment using inversion of axially transmitted low frequency ultrasonic guided waves.

Over the past few decades, early osteoporosis detection using ultrasonic bone quality evaluation has gained prominence. Specifically, various studies focused on axial transmission using ultrasonic guided waves and have highlighted this technique's sensitivity to intrinsic properties of long cortical bones. This work aims to demonstrate the potential of low-frequency ultrasonic guided waves to infer the properties of the bone inside which they are propagating. A proprietary ultrasonic transducer, tailored to transmit ultrasonic guided waves under 500 kHz, was used for the data collection. The g

Osteosynthesis using scorpion plate for nonunion of distal clavicle fracture with small distal bone fragment: A case report.

Distal clavicle nonunion is a relatively common complication of unstable, displaced distal clavicle fractures; however, its standard surgical procedure has not been fully established. We describe a case of symptomatic nonunion of a distal clavicle fracture with a very small distal bone fragment that was treated with a scorpion plate. A 63-year-old man presented with left shoulder pain after a bicycle fall 5 months earlier. Plain radiographs and computed tomography revealed atrophic nonunion of the distal clavicle with a small distal bone fragment measuring 12 mm in length. Shoulder pain interf

C-type natriuretic peptide facilitates autonomic Ca2+ entry in growth plate chondrocytes for stimulating bone growth.

The growth plates are cartilage tissues found at both ends of developing bones, and vital proliferation and differentiation of growth plate chondrocytes are primarily responsible for bone growth. C-type natriuretic peptide (CNP) stimulates bone growth by activating natriuretic peptide receptor 2 (NPR2) which is equipped with guanylate cyclase on the cytoplasmic side, but its signaling pathway is unclear in growth plate chondrocytes. We previously reported that transient receptor potential melastatin-like 7 (TRPM7) channels mediate intermissive Ca2+ influx in growth plate chondrocytes, leading

A Novel Simplified Workflow for Guided Endodontic Surgery in Mandibular Molars With a Thick Buccal Bone Plate: A Case Report.

One of the challenges in apical surgery in mandibular molars is the thick buccal cortical bone plate, which might lead to access errors, damage to neighboring teeth, and injury to healthy tissue. Surgical guide templates with 3-dimensional (3D) impressions have been suggested for use in such cases, allowing greater precision. Usually, this technique involves a cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) examination related to a 3D oral scanning to generate surgical templates printed from 3D imaging data. This study reports a novel workflow possibility in which apical surgery is performed with the aid
