The adaptation to low temperature has research value in the fields of spaceflight, disease treatment, and ecological evolution. However, continuous exposure to cold leads to hypothermia and death in homothermic animals. Interestingly, heterothermic animals can easily overcome this challenge. We transferred intestinal bacteria from hibernating Marmota himalayana into mice (homothermic animals) and successfully induced a torpor-like state. The mice exhibited typical characteristics of hibernation (torpor-like), such as the rectal temperature decreased by 3.72-4.58 °C, respiration rate and physic

Vascular dementia (VD) is the second most common type of dementia after Alzheimer's disease (AD), and chronic cerebral hypoperfusion (CCH) is the main causative factor of VD. Previous reports have confirmed that there is a relationship between VD and gut microbiota, and that some plant-based foods can improve VD through the gut-brain axis (GBA). Panax notoginseng leaves are a specialty food in Yunnan, China, and saponin is its main bioactive component. In this study, we investigated the effects of the total saponins of Panax notoginseng leaves (TSPNL) on CCH-induced VD and their potential mech

Depression is a global health concern affecting nearly 280 million individuals. It not only imposes a significant burden on economies and healthcare systems but also manifests complex physiological connections and consequences. Agmatine, a putative neuromodulator derived primarily from beneficial gut microbes specially Lactobacillus, has emerged as a potential therapeutic agent for mental health. The microbiota-gut-brain axis is involved in the development of depression through the peripheral nervous system, endocrine system, and immune system and may be a key factor in the effect of agmatine.

PURPOSE: Chronic alcohol use is a major cause of liver damage and death. In the United States, multiple factors have led to low utilization of pharmacotherapy for alcohol use disorder (AUD), including lack of provider knowledge and comfort in prescribing medications for AUD. Alcohol consumption has direct effects on the gut microbiota, altering the diversity of bacteria and leading to bacterial overgrowth. Growing evidence suggests that alcohol's effects on the gut microbiome may contribute to increased alcohol consumption and progression of alcohol-associated liver disease (ALD). This article

Hesperidin shows promising results as a potential feed additive for enhancing gastrointestinal motility in animals. Gastrointestinal function plays a pivotal role in animal growth and the digestibility of dietary nutrients, with gastrointestinal motor function serving as a crucial component. However, limited research has been conducted on the application of hesperidin as a feed additive to promote gastrointestinal motility. The present study aims to assess the efficacy of Hesperidin as a feed additive in promoting gastrointestinal motility and elucidating its underlying mechanism. A total of 2

The microbiota-gut-brain axis (MGBA) is a bidirectional signaling pathway mediating the interaction of the microbiota, the intestine, and the central nervous system. While the MGBA plays a pivotal role in normal development and physiology of the nervous and gastrointestinal system of the host, its dysfunction has been strongly implicated in neurological disorders, where intestinal dysbiosis and derived metabolites cause barrier permeability defects and elicit local inflammation of the gastrointestinal tract, concomitant with increased pro-inflammatory cytokines, mobilization and infiltration o

Major depressive disorder (MDD) is a prominent cause of disability worldwide. Current antidepressant drugs produce full remission in only about one-third of MDD patients and there are no biomarkers to guide physicians in selecting the best treatment for individuals. There is an urgency to learn more about the etiology of MDD and to identify new targets that will lead to improved therapy and hopefully aid in predicting and preventing MDD. There has been extensive interest in the roles of the immune system and the gut microbiome in MDD and in how these systems interact. Gut microbes can contribu

BACKGROUND: The community of gut microbes is a key factor controlling the intestinal barrier that communicates with the nervous system through the gut-brain axis. Based on our clinical data showing that populations of Roseburia intestinalis are dramatically decreased in the gut of patients with ulcerative colitis, we studied the efficacy of a strain belonging to this species in the context of colitis and stress using animal models.
METHODS: Dextran sulfate sodium was used to induce colitis in rats, which then underwent an enema with R. intestinalis as a treatment. The disease activity index,

Probiotics are live microorganisms, which when administered in adequate amounts, present a health benefit for the host. While the beneficial effects of probiotics on gastrointestinal function are generally well recognized, new animal research and clinical studies have found that alterations in gut microbial communities can have a broad range of effects throughout the body. Non-intestinal sites impacted include the immune, endocrine, cardiovascular and the central nervous system (CNS). In particular, there has been a growing interest and appreciation about the role that gut microbiota may play

Cerebral cavernous malformation (CCM) is a genetic, cerebrovascular disease. Familial CCM is caused by genetic mutations in KRIT1, CCM2, or PDCD10 Disease onset is earlier and more severe in individuals with PDCD10 mutations. Recent studies have shown that lesions arise from excess mitogen-activated protein kinase kinase kinase 3 (MEKK3) signaling downstream of Toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4) stimulation by lipopolysaccharide derived from the gut microbiome. These findings suggest a gut-brain CCM disease axis but fail to define it or explain the poor prognosis of patients with PDCD10 mutations. He

Postpartum depression (PPD) is a common mood disorder after childbirth and is associated with abrupt hormonal withdrawal, systemic inflammation, and neurobiological dysfunction. Increasing evidence implicates dysregulation of the microbiota-gut-brain axis in PPD pathophysiology, but safe and effective treatments remain limited. Here, we investigated the antidepressant-like effects and mechanisms of ineupatorolide B (InB), a bioactive compound isolated from Inula species, using a hormone-simulated withdrawal mouse model of PPD. InB significantly alleviated depressive- and anhedonia-like behavio

Interactions among the gut, brain, and skin are increasingly understood as a systemic regulatory network connecting intestinal activity, neuroimmune communication, and cutaneous homeostasis. Microbiota-derived metabolites, immune mediators, and neuroendocrine pathways can influence central nervous system activity and subsequently regulate skin homeostasis. This review summarizes current evidence on how functional ingredients modulate the gut-brain-skin axis in the context of aging and skin health. Polyphenols, probiotics, and omega-3 fatty acids appear to act through overlapping biological rou

BACKGROUND: Akkermansia muciniphila (AKK) is a potential probiotic. Our previous studies have shown that it could alleviate depressive-like behaviors (DLBs) in mice by inhibiting neuroinflammation in brain. To further explore its antidepressant effect, this study focused on the effects of AKK on the metabolic activities in gut-brain axis.
METHODS: After chronic restraint stress (CRS) depression model was successfully built, AKK was used as intervention method for 3 weeks. The gut microbiome in feces and two intestinal permeability proteins in colon (Claudin-1, Occludin) were measured, and the

This study investigated hair metals as potential biomarkers in Parkinson's disease (PD) and their link to gut-mediated iron metabolism. In 60 PD patients and matched controls, hair analysis revealed a distinct profile: significantly lower iron and copper, higher manganese and arsenic, and unchanged zinc levels, with combined metals showing diagnostic value (e.g., Cu AUC = 0.79). Using an MPTP-induced mouse model, we linked lower hair iron to gut pathophysiology, finding impaired intestinal barrier integrity, downregulated host iron absorption genes (DMT1 and FPN), and upregulated microbial iro

Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD), comprising Crohn's Disease and Ulcerative Colitis, is a chronic inflammatory condition of the gastrointestinal tract with a remarkably high prevalence of psychiatric comorbidities, particularly Major Depressive Disorder (MDD). The traditional monoaminergic hypothesis of depression is insufficient to explain the complex etiology of MDD, paving the way for new paradigms, such as the inflammatory hypothesis of depression. This narrative review critically explores IBD as a human clinical model to investigate the connection between chronic inflammation and depressi

Late-life epilepsy is an increasingly important neurological and public health challenge, yet its biological basis remains incompletely understood. The microbiota-gut-brain axis has emerged as a systems-level framework linking peripheral metabolism, barrier integrity, immune signaling, and brain excitability. Growing evidence supports an association between gut dysbiosis and epilepsy, particularly drug-resistant epilepsy, although direct evidence specifically addressing this axis in late-life epilepsy remains limited. Most available data instead come from aging biology, general epilepsy cohort
