Oral immunisation with killed Haemophilus influenzae for protection against acute bronchitis in chronic obstructive lung disease.

Fifty patients with chronic obstructive lung disease were randomly allocated to three groups, to assess whether an oral vaccine containing non-typable Haemophilus influenzae protected against acute bronchitis. The double-blind prospective study over a three-month winter period included two placebo groups and one test group. Oral immunisation with H influenzae induced a tenfold reduction in the incidence of infection (p less than 0.001). During the subsequent winter, without further immunisation, protection by the vaccine was no longer statistically significant. There was no clear correlation b

Effects of Drug Therapy on T Lymphocyte Subsets and the Associations of These Subsets with Recurrent Chronic Bronchitis Attacks.

BACKGROUND: We evaluated the effects of drug therapy on T lymphocyte subsets and their associations with recurrent chronic bronchitis (CB) attacks. METHODS: A total of 162 CB patients treated from April 2020 to April 2021 were selected. All patients underwent anti-infective, cough-relieving, and phlegm-eliminating treatment, as detailed in Clinical Pathway for Chronic Bronchitis. They were divided into a recurrent attack group (n=95) and a non-recurrent attack group (n=67). Changes in T lymphocyte subsets at different time points of treatment and their associations with the number of attacks

Proposed treatment algorithms for dogs with chronic bronchitis associated with irreversible airway changes: bronchiectasis and/or bronchomalacia.

Chronic bronchitis (CB) in dogs involves persistent inflammation of the bronchial walls and excessive mucus production within the airways, with or without bronchial infection, and may lead to degenerative airway changes such as bronchiectasis (BE) and bronchomalacia (BM). Standardized treatment protocols for CB with concurrent BE and/or BM (BEBM) are lacking. This article proposes a therapeutic approach for dogs with CB and BEBM, based on veterinary literature and relevant human medical data. Two treatment algorithms are outlined, depending on the presence or absence of cytological evidence of

A quantitative method for assessing treatment-related changes within the airway mucosa in patients with chronic bronchitis.

BACKGROUND: No standardized method has yet been established for evaluating airway mucosal aberrancies associated with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) or chronic bronchitis (CB). While goblet cell hyperplasia (GCH) is an established pathognomonic hallmark of the CB disease process, no standardized method exists for acquiring mucosal biopsies and assessing morphologic airway mucosa alterations. Additionally, the impacts from interventions targeting the airway mucosa are not well defined. In this context, a reliable and robust measure for assessing airway mucosa at baseline and subse

Comparative effects of dexamethasone and bergenin on chronic bronchitis and their anti-inflammatory mechanisms based on NMR metabolomics.

In order to compare the effect of dexamethasone and bergenin on chronic bronchitis and to reveal their anti-inflammatory mechanisms, (1)H NMR-based metabolomics was performed to explore the potential biomarkers of the disease and study the therapeutic mechanisms of the drugs. In this study, 40 Sprague-Dawley male rats were randomly divided into 4 groups, namely control, model, dexamethasone and bergenin groups, with 10 rats in each group. Except for the control group, rats from the other three groups were exposed to tobacco smoke for 1 h d(-1) for 28 days. During the modeling, dexamethasone (0

Telithromycin in the treatment of acute bacterial sinusitis, acute exacerbations of chronic bronchitis, and community-acquired pneumonia.

Acute bacterial sinusitis (ABS), acute exacerbations of chronic bronchitis (AECB), and community-acquired pneumonia (CAP) are common conditions and constitute a substantial socioeconomic burden. The ketolides are a new class of antibacterials with a targeted spectrum of antibacterial activity. In vitro, telithromycin is active against common bacterial pathogens that cause upper and lower respiratory tract infections, including some isolates that are resistant to other antibiotic classes. In 2004, telithromycin was the first ketolide antibiotic approved for clinical use by the US Food and Drug

Inflammation in bronchial biopsies of subjects with chronic bronchitis: inverse relationship of CD8+ T lymphocytes with FEV1.

In order to determine whether the airway inflammatory cells of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) are different from those seen in asthma, we have studied a subepithelial zone, 100 microns deep to the epithelial reticular basement membrane in bronchial biopsies taken from five normal nonsmoking subjects without chronic bronchitis or asthma (FEV1 percentage of predicted [mean +/- SD] 105.7 +/- 25.3), 11 subjects with chronic bronchitis alone (FEV1 percentage of predicted 98.5 +/- 12.9), and 13 subjects with chronic bronchitis in whom there was also evidence of airflow limitation (i.e.

Substance P content and preprotachykinin gene-I mRNA expression in a rat model of chronic bronchitis.

Chronic exposure of rats to high concentrations of SO2 gas induces a syndrome similar to human chronic bronchitis. The aim of these studies was to determine if substance P (SP) content in the trachea or lungs was elevated in this animal model of chronic bronchitis, and whether an increase in SP content was associated with an increase in preprotachykinin gene-I (PPT) mRNA expression. Rats were exposed to air (controls) or 250 ppm SO2 gas, 5 h per day, 5 days per week, for a period of 4 wk. Animals were killed and the lungs and trachea were frozen in liquid nitrogen for measurement of SP content

Persistence and new onset of asthma and chronic bronchitis evaluated longitudinally in a community population sample of adults.

BACKGROUND: Some patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease may share the clinical characteristics of those with asthma; their disease is sometimes called "asthmatic bronchitis." Whether there is a difference between asthmatics who do and do not develop chronic bronchitis is not yet clear. We investigated whether asthma and chronic bronchitis may share some "allergic" phenotypes and whether asthmatic individuals who develop chronic bronchitis subsequently have steeper declines in lung function. METHODS: Known risk factors for decline in lung function were analyzed in a representative

A comparison of 5 days of dirithromycin and 7 days of clarithromycin in acute bacterial exacerbation of chronic bronchitis.

The safety and efficacy of dirithromycin and clarithromycin were compared in a single-blind, multicentre study of patients with acute bacterial exacerbation of chronic bronchitis (AECB). Patients received either dirithromycin, 500 mg once daily for 5 days, or clarithromycin, 250 mg twice daily for 7 days. A total of 212 patients entered the study, of whom 191 qualified for efficacy analysis. Favourable post-therapy clinical and bacteriological response rates for qualified patients (95 dirithromycin and 96 clarithromycin) were similar: 89.5% and 68.8% for dirithromycin vs 94.8% and 71.9% for cl

Effects of inhalation of N-formyl-methionyl-leucyl-phenylalanine in the well elderly and in patients with chronic bronchitis.

BACKGROUND: Inhalation of the bacterial peptide N-formyl-methionyl-leucyl-phenylalanine (FMLP) produces bronchoconstriction in normal subjects. FMLP thus has a putative role as a mediator of bronchoconstriction associated with bacterial bronchial infection. METHODS: The effects of FMLP inhalation were examined in ten subjects with a history of chronic bronchitis and ten age matched control subjects. Each subject inhaled FMLP doses from 0.025 to 0.8 mumol to determine the provocative dose of FMLP causing a 20% fall in FEV1(PD20FMLP). FEV1 was recorded every five minutes after the final FMLP in

[Clinical and immunologic test of the activity of a polymicrobial vaccine in patients with chronic bronchitis during a flare-up].

The authors evaluated the effect of an orally administered polymicrobial vaccine in a group of chronic bronchitis patients in order to assess its efficacy in preventing recurrent infections and as adjuvants during minor acute episodes. Compared to the control group, vaccinated patients had 1) a reduced number of flare-ups, and these were less severe and symptoms were improved; II) lymphocyte phenotype was not altered in any of the patients but nevertheless the response to skin tests for delayed sensitivity was improved in the vaccinated patients only; III) more rapid symptomatic improvement of

A randomised, prospective, single-blind comparison of cefadroxil and amoxycillin in the treatment of acute exacerbations of chronic bronchitis.

Cefadroxil 1 g twice daily and amoxycillin 500 mg three times a day were compared in 111 patients suffering from acute exacerbations of chronic bronchitis. Treatment was for seven days. Excellent or good clinical responses were found in 85 per cent of cases receiving cefadroxil and 81 per cent of patients taking amoxycillin. However, residual symptoms of cough and rhonchi were present to a statistically significantly greater extent in the amoxycillin group. Tolerance of both drugs was good with mild to moderate side effects reported in seven of 54 patients in the cefadroxil group and six of 56
