INTRODUCTION: Bronchogenic cyst is a rare clinical entity that occurs due to abnormal development of the foregut; the majority of bronchogenic cysts have been described in the mediastinum and they are rarely found in an extrathoracic location.
CASE PRESENTATION: We describe the case of an intra-abdominal bronchogenic cyst of the mesentery, incidentally discovered during an emergency laparotomy for a perforated gastric ulcer in a 33-year-old Caucasian man.
CONCLUSIONS: Bronchogenic cyst should be considered in the differential diagnosis of subdiaphragmatic masses, even in an intraperitoneal l…

A best evidence topic in cardiac surgery was written according to a structured protocol. The question addressed was whether asymptomatic bronchogenic cysts in adults require surgery or whether they can be adequately managed with conservative treatment or observation only. Altogether more than 310 papers were found using the reported search of which 23 represented the best evidence to answer the clinical question. The authors, journal, date and country of publication, patient group studied, study type, relevant outcomes and results of these papers are tabulated. The papers identified included 6…

Langerhans cell histiocytosis (LCH) is a disease caused by the proliferation of Langerhans cells in various tissues or organs. A 43-year-old male patient presented with an anterior mediastinal mass in the thymus. Histological examination after a thymectomy revealed a bronchogenic cyst in the thymus, and multiple LCH and small thymic cysts were also incidentally observed in the thymus. Unifocal LCH in an adult occurring in the thymus is extremely rare. Furthermore, no cases of LCH with the coexistence of bronchogenic and thymic cysts in the thymus have been previously reported.

Mediastinal bronchogenic cysts are an uncommon entity and surgical experience of their removal by video-assisted thoracoscopy is limited. We present our patient outcomes and surgical technique in the treatment of bronchogenic cysts by video-assisted thoracoscopy. The study included 8 patients (4 females and 4 males between the ages of 4 and 52 years), 7 of whom presented clinical symptoms. The mean widest diameter of the cyst was 7.6 cm. In 5 patients the cyst was in the middle mediastinum and in 3, the posterior mediastinum. The intervention was performed using 3 or 4 entry points. Initial pu…

BACKGROUND/PURPOSE: Bronchogenic cysts (BCs) are usually located in the mediastinum and they occur less commonly in the lung parenchyma. This study investigated the findings from computed tomography (CT) images, clinical presentation and histopathologic findings of intrapulmonary BCs.
METHODS: From the last 7 years, the CT images of 20 patients (12 females, 8 males; mean age, 38.8 +/- 21.7 years; median age, 34 years) with intrapulmonary BC were available. Contrast-enhanced CT findings were characterized and correlated with clinical presentation and histopathologic findings (using Fisher's ex…

A 15-year-old female was admitted to our hospital with an abnormal chest X-ray shadow in the left posterior mediastinum found at health screening. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) suggested that the cystic lesion contained a viscous liquid. The lesion was removed using a thoracoscope and diagnosed as bronchogenic cyst. Postoperative pathological evaluation was consistent with the initial diagnosis of bronchogenic cyst. This case illustrates the usefulness of thoracoscopic surgery for diagnosis and extirpation of bronchogenic cyst.

Seven unusual cases of esophageal bronchogenic cyst (EBC) are presented. Different from mediastinal or pulmonary bronchogenic cysts, EBCs predominately affect young women (six out of seven cases; mean age, 29.9 years), and clinically, such cases were characterized by dysphagia and chest pain, especially during exercise. On radiographs and computed tomographs, EBCs typically appeared as 3- to 4-cm midthoracic cystic masses close abutting to the midthoracic esophagus. Rarely, exophytic lower thoracic EBC may mimic lung nodule. Total cyst excision usually offers satisfactory outcome with no recur…

Bronchogenic cysts are congenital abnormalities that occur due to abnormal development of the ventral foregut. Most share a common wall with the esophagus. Excision is indicated to prevent complications such as mass effect or infection. Thoracoscopic resection has been previously described. Injury to the adjacent esophagus is a potential complication due to its close proximity, and placement of an esophageal bougie is often used to help identify the esophagus. We describe a technique utilizing the InfraVision Esophageal Kit (Stryker Endoscopy, San Jose, California) to assist in the illuminatio…

We report an unusual case of a mediastinal foregut malformation consisting of complete components of both a bronchogenic and an esophageal duplication cyst in a child. The lesion was identified as an incidental finding during evaluation of a clavicular fracture. Thoracotomy was performed for excision of the mass. A discussion of the pathological findings and the diagnosis and management of foregut malformations is presented.

Cutaneous and subcutaneous cysts with ciliated pseudostratified columnar (respiratory) epithelium present a diagnostic dilemma. We report a case of a bronchogenic cyst occurring on the back. The differential diagnosis includes branchial cleft cyst, thyroglossal duct cyst, cutaneous ciliated cyst, and mature cystic teratoma. We review reports of extrapulmonary bronchogenic cysts and discuss their possible embryology.

Bronchogenic cysts are developmental foregut anomalies usually located within the mediastinum. Although typically asymptomatic, infection or compression of adjacent structures may become prominent. Surgical excision is recommended to establish diagnosis, alleviate symptoms if present, and prevent future complications. We report our recent experience with bronchogenic cysts including 7 located within the mediastinum and a rare instance of a cyst below the diaphragm.

Background: Bronchogenic cysts result from a congenital anomalous budding of the tracheobronchial tree. Resection is usually recommended to avoid complications. Mediastinal bronchogenic cysts present a unique challenge due to their proximity to vital structures. The purpose of this study is to review our experience with mediastinal bronchogenic cysts. Methods: A single-institution retrospective review evaluated all mediastinal bronchogenic cyst excisions between January 2012 and November 2022. Patient demographics were assessed, including age at diagnosis, presenting symptoms, imaging workup, …

A 31-year-old woman was referred to our hospital for evaluation of a cardiac mass in the right atrium. Cardiac magnetic resonance imaging indicated a cystic mass filled with fluid accumulation in the right atrium. The mass was identified as a cardiac cyst and was surgically removed. Pathological examination revealed an extremely rare bronchogenic cyst. Bronchogenic cysts are benign congenital abnormalities of primitive foregut origins that form in the mediastinum during embryonic development. There is unusual clinical dilemmas surrounding the treatment plan for cardiac surgery or biopsy of car…

A 31-year-old woman presented to the emergency department with atypical retrosternal chest pain and dyspnoea. Investigations initially revealed atrial flutter on her electrocardiogram and an interatrial septal mass on CT angiography of the chest. Additional workup with cardiac MRI and transoesophageal echocardiogram were able to delineate the cardiac mass. Electrophysiology and cardiothoracic surgery were consulted. The mass was excised in the same hospitalisation and the pathology report demonstrated a bronchogenic cyst. After mass excision, the patient chest pain has decreased, and she rever…

Mediastinal leiomyosarcoma is an aggressive tumor that primarily occurs in the posterior mediastinum. A bronchogenic cyst is a benign lesion that often develops in the mediastinum close to the thoracic trachea and has been reported to be the origin of certain malignancies. The present study reports an extremely rare case of an anterior mediastinal leiomyosarcoma that was considered to have originated from a bronchogenic cyst. An 82-year-old woman complained of chest pain, presenting an abnormal 70 mm mass shadow in the anterior mediastinum of a chest CT scan. Mediastinal tumor resection was pe…

A 71-year-old woman presented with dysphagia and acute shortness of breath. Surgical history included a prior thoracotomy overseas for a bronchogenic mesothelial cyst 19 years before. Computed tomography demonstrated a mass within the posterior mediastinum measuring 69 × 70 × 74 mm. A median sternotomy was performed, and after removal of the cyst, repair of the left atrium and pulmonary vessels was undertaken due to the invading nature of the cyst. Intrapericardial bronchogenic cysts are a rare form of congenital cysts arising from the primitive foregut. The cardiac primordia are in close prox…
