We investigated the effect of robotic assistance in a postoperative change in hip offset and the incidence of trochanteric bursitis among total hip arthroplasty (THA) patients. As part of a retrospective study of a consecutive series of patients over a 3-year period, 211 patients (102 traditional; 109 robotic) between 2013 and 2016 who underwent posterior-lateral THA were reviewed. Hip offset was measured on preoperative and postoperative anterior-posterior (AP) pelvis radiographs. The absolute change in total hip offset was higher in patients undergoing non-robotic THA than in patients underg

Metatarsalgia defined as pain at the plantar aspect of the forefoot. Intermetatarsal bursitis is considered one potential soft-tissue cause of metatarsalgia that is presumably under-estimated, under-investigated, and, consequently, often misdiagnosed. To assess the role of MRI in the elucidation of the cause of metatarsalgia in patients with different autoimmune disorders presenting primarily with this symptom and to present the accompanying clinical and radiological findings of intermetatarsal bursitis. Retrospective evaluation of the medical records of patients with different rheumatological

This case report describes what the authors believe is the first case of a patient with obturator internus tendinitis and bursitis successfully treated with a corticosteroid injection using a trans-tendinous lateral to medial approach. The patient presented with right gluteal pain not relieved by physical therapy or right hip and ischial bursa corticosteroid injections. Pelvic and lumbar spine MRIs and EMG/NCS findings were unremarkable. Physical examination demonstrated tenderness to palpation at the right middle lower gluteal region. Ultrasound imaging with sonopalpation identified the maxim

A 55-year-old man was diagnosed with remitting seronegative symmetrical synovitis with pitting edema (RS3PE) syndrome. Contrast-enhanced computed tomography for cancer screening showed a mass with low-density centers with an enhanced rim in the left iliopsoas muscle. We suspected an iliopsoas abscess and performed computed-tomography-guided puncture of the mass. Both Gram staining and the culture of the fluid were negative. We diagnosed the patient with RS3PE syndrome with iliopsoas bursitis and administered low-dose corticosteroids without antibiotics. The symptoms, including left hip pain, q

CASE: A 73-year-old immunocompromised male presented with recurrent left elbow swelling due to Mycobacterium avium intracellulare complex (MAC) olecranon bursitis. 3 years after completing MAC treatment, he underwent right total knee arthroplasty (TKA). 1 year later, he developed TKA pain and swelling and was diagnosed with MAC prosthetic joint infection (PJI). He underwent TKA resection, reimplantation, and 12 months of anti-MAC therapy. This patient is the seventh case report of MAC olecranon bursitis and the third case report of MAC PJI. He is the only report of both MAC olecranon bursitis

BackgroundTrochanteric bursitis is an underrecognized cause of early postoperative lateral hip pain following lumbosacral fixation and may mimic radicular pain. Acute postoperative bursitis and its metabolic-mechanical determinants remain poorly characterized.MethodsA total of 310 patients who underwent lumbosacral fixation (2020-2024) were screened; 37 (11.9%) developed first-week lateral hip pain. After applying exclusion criteria, 30 magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)-confirmed acute trochanteric bursitis cases were age- and sex-matched 1:1 with 30 controls. Vitamin D, femoral neck T-scores,

OBJECTIVE: To summarize current insights on the immune pathology of bursitis caused by rheumatic inflammatory diseases, degenerative conditions, or mechanical stress and identify knowledge gaps in this field. Data on tenosynovitis pathology was included for comparison.
METHODS: We performed a systematic review encompassing an electronic database search of all published literatures in PubMed/MEDLINE from inception to February 13, 2023, investigating the immunological changes occurring in the bursa of patients with inflammatory rheumatic diseases, degenerative conditions or mechanical stress (e

Adventitious bursitis is an inflammatory condition affecting bursae. Distinct from primary or infectious bursitis, adventitious bursitis typically develops secondary to conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis, gout, or repetitive joint overuse. The resulting inflammation can lead to pain, swelling, and restricted mobility, significantly impacting patients' quality of life. In this paper, we present the case of a 23-year-old patient who reported to our clinic with swelling and pain localized to the right arm. Clinical examination, imaging studies, and histopathological analysis confirmed a prel

BACKGROUND: Aspiration of the olecranon bursa is a treatment option for acute olecranon bursitis (OB). Typically, the aspirate is sent for microbiologic analysis, cell count, and crystal analysis. This study investigates the utility of fluid aspirate analysis from patients with clinically diagnosed aseptic OB.
METHODS: In this prospective study (IRB #i20-00986), patients presenting with acute aseptic OB were treated with aspiration as standard of care. Patients consented to participate in this study via phone. Patients with suspected infectious bursitis, open draining wound, and chronic OB we

Knee pain is a very common complaint in routine physiatry and orthopedic practice. While bursitis is a well-known and common cause of knee pain, deep infrapatellar bursa (DIPB) involvement is relatively less common. Inflammation of DIPB occurs commonly due to either direct trauma or overuse, but other rare causes have also been reported in the literature including infection, juvenile idiopathic arthritis, gout, and juvenile ankylosing spondylitis. We report a case of chronic inflammation of DIPB caused by direct trauma and associated with patellar tendinopathy. Additionally, we describe the ch

A livestock farmer with a history of arthropathy presented with unilateral olecranon bursal swelling and tenderness. Multiple wound and intraoperative cultures revealed growth of Trueperella bernardiae, a Gram-positive coccobacillus, with symptom resolution following appropriate antimicrobial therapy. To our knowledge, this is the first case report of olecranon bursitis caused by this organism. Coryneform bacteria are often regarded as contaminants in clinical cultures, but advanced techniques for species identification may reveal expanded pathogenic potential of individual species like T. ber

Bursitis is a common medical condition that can occur either with or without infection. We present a case of fungal olecranon bursitis in an immunocompetent individual caused by the new species Knoxdaviesia dimorphospora. It is a dematiaceous filamentous fungus characterized by the production of two different conidia: hyaline and cylindrical, which rise up from phialidic conidiogenous cells located in the upper part of differentiated and unbranched conidiophores, and pale brown and ellipsoidal conidia produced by phialidic conidiogenous cells which are born directly on hyphae. BACKGROUND: This study investigated the presence of bursitis in the medial compartment of the knee (pes anserine, semimembranosus-tibial collateral ligament, and medial collateral ligament bursa) in osteoarthritis, chondromalacia patella and medial meniscal tears.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: Radiological findings of 100 patients undergoing magnetic resonance imaging with a preliminary diagnosis of knee pain were retrospectively evaluated by two radiologists. The first radiologist assessed all patients in terms of osteoarthritis, chondromalacia patella and medial meniscal tear. The second radiologis

INTRODUCTION: Subacromial bursitis is caused by inflammation of the bursa that separates the superior surface of the supraspinatus tendon from the overlying coraco-acromial ligament and acromion. While multiple cytokines are implicated, interleukin-1 beta appears to play a prominent role. Rilonacept, an interleukin-1 trap, may be an alternative to corticosteroid injection for the management of this condition.
METHODS: This single center, randomized, non-inferiority, unblinded study recruited 33 subjects over 9 months. Twenty subjects received 160mg intrabursal injection of rilonacept and 13 r

A 66-yr-old white woman presented with progressive complaints of right lateral hip and thigh pain associated with a disabling limp without an antecedent history of trauma. Physical examination revealed localized pain over the right greater trochanter to palpation. A full pain-free range of motion of the right hip was associated with weakness in the hip abductors. The patient ambulated with a compensated right Trendelenburg gait. Subsequent magnetic resonance imaging demonstrated a trochanteric bursitis and an effusion of the hip and a full-thickness tear of the gluteus medius muscle, with both

Calcific trochanteric bursitis, a common regional pain syndrome, is characterized by chronic, intermittent aching pain over the lateral aspect of the hip and limitation of function. Effective treatment is invasive, including infiltration therapy and surgical intervention. The therapeutic effects of conservative treatment modalities have not been proven. A 59-year-old woman presented at the department of physical medicine and rehabilitation with a 2-year history of pain in the right hip. She had been treated with several agents such as glucocorticoids and local anesthetics (via injection) for t
