The introduction, resistance to, and acceptance of external rhinoplasty are reviewed. Technical advances - butterfly incision, electrocautery, drainage incisions, and use of the rotating burr - are discussed; and illustrations are used to support the author's belief in advantages of the external approach.

Plant hybridization often alters herbivore-relevant traits, yet the effects of hybrid feeding on specialist herbivores, especially those that co-opt host-plant defenses, are largely unknown. We examined how naturally derived hybrids between Asclepias syriaca and A. speciosa (A. syriaca x speciosa) affect monarch butterfly (Danaus plexippus) performance and cardenolide sequestration. Across three independent greenhouse experiments, monarch caterpillars reared on genetically heterogeneous A. syriaca x speciosa hybrid milkweeds grew more slowly than caterpillars reared on either parental species.

Gene tree discordance along a set of aligned genomes presents a challenge for phylogenomic methods to identify the non-recombining regions a … t can be analyzed using both window sizes. We then applied this method to the genomes of Heliconius butterflies and great apes. We found that the best window sizes for the butterflies' chromosomes ranged from ≤125 to 250 bp, which are much shorter than those used in a previous study even though this difference in window size did not significantly change the m …

The coevolution of insects and chemical plant defences has been described as an arms race, but it is unclear whether physical plant defences can produce similar outcomes. Here, we report a previously unknown interaction from the mutualism between ants and Macaranga trees. Although Macaranga trees are well protected against herbivory by aggressive ants, caterpillars of the genus Arhopala (Lepidoptera: Lycaenidae) can feed on the leaves by appeasing the ants with nectar-like secretions. One ant-plant species, M. trachyphylla, bears hooked trichomes on its green surfaces. When placed on M. trachy

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Previous studies have shown that humans, particularly those with high levels of spider fear, show automatic avoid … ther away from themselves or towards themselves. To draw attention to stimulus content, pictures of butterflies were used in additional NoGo trials, they required participants to not move their hand.
RESULTS: Avoidance of spiders was observed in both the pre-movement times (time to lift the hand from a starting position) and the grabbing times (time to reach …

Insect biomass is declining globally, likely driven by climate change and pesticide use, yet systematic studies on the effects of various ch … ed. We observed similar behavioral changes across multiple insect species, including mosquitoes and butterflies. These findings suggest that widespread sublethal pesticide exposure can alter insect behavior and physiology, threatening long-term population survival.

BACKGROUND: Cholesterol granuloma (CG) commonly occurs in the petrous apex; their occurrence in the anterior cranial fossa CGs is rare. Subfrontal approaches are the conventional surgical approaches for the resection of midline lesions of the anterior cranial fossa and frontal sinuses. In this article, we describe a successful minimally invasive approach for resection of a small midline anterior cranial fossa CG.
METHODS: We report a rare case of frontal air sinus CG extending intradurally through the foramen caecum. The surgical management of this patient involved the use of a minimally inva

A solitary adrenal gland spanning the midline has been alternatively described as "Horseshoe" or "Butterfly" and is a rare congenital abnormality almost exclusively associated with neonates. There have been 65 reported cases in fetuses and infants, based on ultrasound and autopsy findings. Horseshoe adrenal gland is associated with several congenital anomalies, such as asplenia (52 %), neural tube defects (37 %), renal abnormalities (29 %), and diaphragmatic defects (1 %). Recently, Feldman and colleagues [2] reported the first case of an adult male with horseshoe adrenal gland and posterior m

CONTEXT: Chromium toxicity is rare in individuals who do not have a history of occupational or deliberate exposure to chromium or chromium-containing compounds.
CASE REPORT: A 39-year-old female with confirmed bile acid malabsorption had an elevated whole blood chromium concentration of 76.3 nmol/L (normal < 40 nmol/L). There was no history of chromium exposure and no clinical signs of chromium toxicity. Two repeat samples drawn through a butterfly needle, after discarding of an initial blood draw, also revealed an elevated blood chromium concentration (60.1, 122.7 nmol/L). A subsequent sampl

Chemosensory protein (CSP) genes significantly enriched in the female antennae are potential molecular candidates for mediating female oviposition behaviors. In this study, we presented the interaction mechanisms of a female-antenna-biased PxutCSP19 in Papilio xuthus to 47 host volatiles, four biopesticides and 24 synthetic insecticides. Using a bioinformatics-based homology search, 22 genes orthologous to PxutCSP19 were identified from 22 other Papilio butterflies with high sequence identities to each other (73.20~98.72%). Multiple alignment analyses revealed a particularly extended N-terminu…

Reverse T-plasty is an alternative "no resection" technique for posterior mitral leaflet prolapse repair that is inspired by butterfly resection. It combines mediolateral and anteroposterior plane foldings of the posterior leaflet without any resection and shortens cardiopulmonary bypass and cross-clamping time.

Herbivore damage to leaves and other vegetative tissues often stimulates the emission of volatile compounds, suggesting that these substances have a role in plant defense. In fact, ample evidence has accumulated in the last few years indicating that volatiles from vegetative plant parts can directly repel herbivores, such as ovipositing butterflies and host-seeking aphids. Volatiles have also been demonstrated to protect plants by attracting herbivore enemies, such as parasitic wasps, predatory arthropods and possibly even insectivorous birds. Even below ground herbivory results in the release…

Gregarious behavior in insects provides several ecological benefits, including thermoregulation. There is evidence that aggregation in caterpillars may enhance heat gain under cool conditions, but whether it also facilitates cooling under warm conditions remains unknown. We tested under field conditions whether the relationship between body-air temperature differential and air temperature differed between solitary and grouped caterpillars of the gregarious butterfly Battus polydamas archidamas. Grouped caterpillars, but not solitary caterpillars, showed an overall association between body-air

Robertsonian chromosomes form by fusion of two chromosomes that have centromeres located near their ends, known as acrocentric or telocentric chromosomes. This fusion creates a new metacentric chromosome and is a major mechanism of karyotype evolution and speciation. Robertsonian chromosomes are common in nature and were first described in grasshoppers by the zoologist W. R. B. Robertson more than 100 years ago. They have since been observed in many species, including catfish, sheep, butterflies, bats, bovids, rodents and humans, and are the most common chromosomal change in mammals. Robertson…

Caterpillars are the larval forms of moths and butterflies and belong to the order Lepidoptera. Caterpillars, and occasionally moths, have evolved defense mechanisms, including irritating hairs, spines, venoms, and toxins that may cause human disease. The pathologic mechanisms underlying reactions to Lepidoptera are poorly understood. Lepidoptera are uncommonly recognized causes of localized stings, eczematous or papular dermatitis, and urticaria. Part I of this two-part series on caterpillars and moths reviews Lepidopteran life cycles, terminology, and the epidemiology of caterpillar and moth…

INTRODUCTION: Fluticasone propionate (FP) is a topical corticosteroid used to treat rhinosinusitis with nasal polyposis (CRSwNP). However, the need for a consensus on its use stems from the increasing focus on optimizing topical therapies to improve clinical outcomes and minimize systemic side effects.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: The Butterfly Decisions AI platform facilitated the collection and integration of evaluations and feedback, facilitating an expert consensus on 13 statements.
RESULTS: The participants agreed highly on the different statements. The experts agreed that FP effectively redu
