Successful treatment of severe iatrogenic calcinosis cutis with intravenous sodium thiosulfate in a child affected by T-acute lymphoblastic leukemia.

Sodium thiosulfate has been successfully used to treat calcyphilaxis in adults and children, but its effect on iatrogenic calcinosis cutis secondary to extravasation of calcium solutions is less known. We describe a 5-year-old boy with acute lymphoblastic leukemia who developed severe calcinosis cutis in the right forearm and hand, and in the left leg and foot after extravasation of calcium gluconate during treatment for tumor-lysis-syndrome-related hypocalcaemia. Surgical debridement, local wound care, hyperbaric oxygen therapy, and sodium thiosulfate infusion achieved a complete healing of a…

Calcinosis of the cutis and subcutis: an unusual nonimmunologic adverse reaction to subcutaneous injections of low-molecular-weight calcium-containing heparins.

BACKGROUND: Local side effects at the injection sites of low-molecular-weight heparins are rare and can be of immunologic or nonimmunologic origin. Calcinosis cutis is a rare disorder and occurs in various circumstances. In patients with chronic renal failure the risk of pathologic calcifications is raised due to elevated calcium-phosphorus products. OBJECTIVE: Five patients suffering from renal failure developed remarkable cutaneous and subcutaneous nodules or plaques following subcutaneous nadroparin-calcium injections. Our aim was to evaluate the morphology and precipitation factors of the…

A peculiar type of dystrophic calcinosis cutis affecting the surface of damaged genital skin and mucosa in an elderly woman with a vesicovaginal fistula.

Conditionally replicating adenoviruses (CRAds), or oncolytic adenoviruses, such as E1B55K-deleted adenovirus, are attractive anticancer agents. However, the therapeutic efficacy of E1B55K-deleted adenovirus for refractory solid tumors has been limited. Environmental stress conditions may induce nuclear accumulation of YB-1, which occurs in multidrug-resistant and adenovirus-infected cancer cells. Overexpression and nuclear localization of YB-1 are associated with poor prognosis and tumor recurrence in various cancers. Nuclear YB-1 transactivates the multidrug resistance 1 (MDR1) genes through

Acral milia-like idiopathic calcinosis cutis in a child with down syndrome: report of a case, review of the literature, and description of dermoscopic findings.

Milia-like idiopathic calcinosis cutis (MICC) is a rare dermopathy, usually occurring in children with Down syndrome. We report a case of an 8-year-old girl with Down syndrome who presented with histologically verified MICC, briefly review the literature on MICC, discuss the differential diagnosis, and describe the use of dermoscopy in the evaluation of lesions, which we believe has never been published previously with this entity.

Basal Cell Carcinoma With Calcification: Case Report of Calcifying Basal Cell Carcinoma and Review of Calcinosis Cutis Associated With Basal Cell Carcinoma.

Basal cell carcinoma is the most common cutaneous neoplasm. Calcinosis cutis is the deposition of calcium within the dermis. An 80-year-old man presented with a pearly nodule on his left nasal ala; a shave biopsy confirmed the diagnosis of a nodular basal cell carcinoma with calcinosis cutis, which was removed with Mohs micrographic surgery. The incidence of basal cell carcinoma with calcinosis cutis as well as the classification, identification, and potential origin of calcium deposits in basal cell carcinoma are discussed. Basal cell carcinoma can be associated with calcinosis cutis; indeed,…

Mobile Subcutaneous Calcinosis Cutis: A Case Report of a Mobile Solitary Subepidermal Calcified Nodule on a Woman's Leg and a Review of Mobile Subcutaneous Tumors.

Calcinosis cutis describes the deposition of calcium in the dermis. A case of a 69-year-old woman with idiopathic calcinosis cutis that presented as a mobile subcutaneous nodule is described. The patient had an asymptomatic, firm, mobile subcutaneous nodule on her right lower leg of at least six months duration. The nodule could be easily moved from one location to another. An incisional biopsy was performed. Microscopic examination of the tissue specimen showed islands of basophilic calcium material in dense sclerotic dermal connective tissue establishing the diagnosis of calcinosis cutis. Mo…

Modifications at K31 on the lateral surface of histone H4 contribute to genome structure and expression in apicomplexan parasites.

BACKGROUND: Calcinosis cutis, a disease characterized by the presence of calcium deposits in the skin, is classified into four types according to etiology: dystrophic, metastatic, iatrogenic and idiopathic. The dystrophic form is the most common while the idiopathic one is the rarest, but specific incidence and frequency data are not available in scientific literature. OBJECTIVE: Calcinosis cutis circumscripta is a very rare form of idiopathic calcinosis cutis arising in the second half of life. It typically involves the extremities and is associated with prior trauma and scleroderma. We deal…

Solitary erythematous, tender plaque of the heel in a young infant.

Calcinosis cutis is a rare disorder resulting from the precipitation and deposition of insoluble calcium and phosphate salts (hydroxyapatite crystals) in the dermis and subcutaneous tissue. It is generally divided into four main groups on the basis of etiology and pathogenesis. Clinical presentation of cutaneous calcinosis cutis varies according to the diagnosis and the underlying process. We report a case of calcinosis cutis of the heel in which both the extravasation of a calcium gluconate infusion and renal failure could have promoted the development of calcinosis cutis.

Localized cutaneous calcinosis associated with leptospirosis in a 4-month-old beagle puppy.

A 4-month-old male beagle dog was presented for a 15-day history of firm cutaneous nodules. Histopathological examination of skin biopsies revealed calcinosis cutis. However, re-evaluation 40 d later confirmed spontaneous resolution of the lesions without specific treatment. Two weeks before development of the skin lesions, this dog had been hospitalized and treated for acute renal and hepatic disease attributed to leptospirosis, with both PCR and serology positive for Leptospira australis. Calcinosis cutis secondary to a systemic disease (leptospirosis, blastomycosis) has been rarely reported…

Cutaneous calcinosis in localized discoid lupus erythematosus.

Cutaneous calcinosis is reported in the lesions of a woman with long-standing discoid lupus erythematosus. Calcium deposits were found in the middle and deep parts of the dermis surrounded by homogeneous collagen staining positively with Alcian blue solution. In contrast to the relative frequency of this event in patients with scleroderma or dermatomyositis, calcinosis cutis occurs very rarely in lupus erythematosus. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report of calcinosis cutis in discoid lupus erythematosus.

[Idiopathic calcinosis of the skin].

Biochemical, radiologic and enzymatic studies are carried out in a case of idiopatic calcinosis cutis. The diagnosis has been obtained by exclusion of the other forms of calcinosis cutis. Therefore we believe that the disease may evolue in the future to a sistemic disease probably "collagen disease". However, today there is no evidence for this.
