BACKGROUND: Cadmium (Cd), a highly toxic heavy metal, poses a significant threat to aquatic organisms by disrupting endocrine and metabolic processes. Its bioaccumulation in fish can impair hormonal regulation, leading to growth suppression, stress, and thyroid dysfunction. Alternative strategies using natural compounds are being explored to mitigate these toxic effects in aquaculture.
OBJECTIVE: In this study, the protective potential of grape (Vitis vinifera L.) seed extract (GSE) against the toxic effects of cadmium (Cd) on growth hormone, stress hormones, and thyroid hormones in common ca

BACKGROUND: The Gα family plays a crucial role in the complex reproductive regulatory network of teleosts. However, the characterization and function of Gα family members, especially Gαq, remain poorly understood in teleosts. To analyze the characterization, expression, and function of grass carp (Ctenopharyngodon idella) Gαq, we identified the Gα family members in grass carp genome, and analyzed the expression, distribution, and signal transduction of Gαq/gnaq. We also explored the role of Gαq in the reproductive regulation of grass carp.
RESULTS: Our results showed that the grass carp genom

Difenoconazole (DFZ) is a widely used triazole fungicide in agricultural production. However, the presence of DFZ residue in the environment poses a significant risk to non-target organisms. Ferulic acid (FA) is a phenolic compound known for its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. This study aims to investigate the hepatic damage caused by DFZ in carp and explore the mechanism through which FA alleviates this damage. The findings revealed that FA enhanced the antioxidant capability of the carp's liver and reduced the accumulation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) in the liver tissue.

AIMS: Beyond the pivotal roles of the gut microbiome in initiating physiological processes and modulating genetic factors, a query persists: Can a single gene mutation alter the abundance of the gut microbiome community? Not only this, but the intricate impact of gut microbiome composition on skin pigmentation has been largely unexplored.
METHODS AND RESULTS: Based on these premises, our study examines the abundance of lipase-producing gut microbes about differential gene expression associated with bile acid synthesis and lipid metabolism-related blood metabolites in red (whole wild) and whit

Spring viremia of carp virus (SVCV) has a broad fish host spectrum and is responsible for a disease that generally affects juvenile fishes with a mortality rate of up to 90%. In the absence of treatments or vaccines against SVCV, the search for prophylactic or therapeutic solutions is thus relevant, particularly to identify solutions compatible with mass vaccination. In addition to being a threat to aquaculture and ecosystems, SVCV is a unique pathogen to study virus-host interactions in the zebrafish model. Establishing the first reverse genetics system for SVCV and the design of recombinant

Imidacloprid (IMI) is a contaminant widespread in surface water, causing serious intestinal damage in the common carp. Melatonin (MT), an endogenous indoleamine hormone, plays a crucial role in mitigating pesticide-induced toxicity. Our previous research has demonstrated that MT effectively reduces the production of intestinal microbial-derived signal peptidoglycan (PGN) induced by IMI, thereby alleviating intestinal tight junction injuries in the common carp. In this study, we performed a transcriptomic analysis to explore the effect of MT on the IMI exposure-induced gut damage of the common

In recent years, the concentrations of cadmium (Cd) and diclofenac (DCF) in water have frequently exceeded the standard; however, the toxic effects of these two pollutants on grass carp under single and combined exposure are unknown. In this study, the concentrations of pollutants in different tissues were detected, and the toxicities of the two pollutants to grass carp under different exposure conditions were compared based on growth traits, biochemical responses, gut microbiome, and transcriptomes. Based on these findings, the brain showed the lowest levels of Cd and DCF accumulation. Oxidat

The vertebral column, a defining trait of all vertebrates, is organized as a concatenated chain of vertebrae, and therefore its support to the body depends on individual vertebral morphology. Consequently, studying the morphology of the vertebral centrum is of anatomical and clinical importance. Grass carp (GC) is a member of the infraclass Teleostei (teleost fish), which accounts for the majority of all vertebrate species; thus, its vertebral anatomical structure can help us understand vertebrate development and vertebral morphology. In this study, we have investigated the morphology and symm

Cyanobacterial blooms pose a serious threat to the survival of fish because of the hepatotoxicity of microcystins produced by toxic cyanobacteria such as Microcystis. Many studies have investigated the hepatotoxicity of microcystins in common carp, a freshwater fish distributed worldwide, but the hepatotoxicity mechanism has not been fully clarified. The present study aimed to investigate the mechanism underlying the hepatic inflammatory response and hepatocyte apoptosis induced by acute microcystin-LR exposure via intraperitoneal injection (71 μg/kg and 119 μg/kg) or gavage (357.08 μg/kg) and

BACKGROUND: Female sex workers (FSWs) live and work in high-risk environments, experience high levels of adversity, and have multigenerational trauma that can negatively affect their children. Yet not much is known about the prevalence of victimization (i.e., exposure to maltreatment and trauma) among children of FSWs. This study compared the prevalence of lifetime victimization among adolescents of FSWs and adolescents of non-FSWs in Gulu City, Northern Uganda.
METHODS: A comparative cross-sectional study was conducted among adolescents (10-17 years) enrolled in the Children of At-Risk Paren

Polystyrene microplastics (PS-MPs) affect the immune defense function on carp (Cyprinus carpio). The PS-MPs model of carp was established by feeding with PS-MPs particle size of 8 µm and concentration of 1000 ng/L water. Hepatopancreas function test revealed the activities of AKP, ALT, AST and LDH abnormal increase. PS-MPs induced tissue damage and lead to abnormal hepatopancreas function. The PS-MPs also induced a oxidative stress with the antioxidant enzymes SOD, CAT, GSH-PX, and T-AOC activities decreasing and reactive oxygen species (ROS) excessive accumulation. PS-MPs activated the Toll l

Water pollution caused by widely used agricultural pesticide chlorpyrifos (CPF) has aroused extensive public concern. While previous studies have reported on toxic effect of CPF on aquatic animal, little is known about its effect on common carp (Cyprinus carpio L.) livers. In this experiment, we exposed common carp to CPF (11.6 μg/L) for 15, 30, and 45 days to establish a poisoning model. Histological observation, biochemical assay, quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR), Western blot, and integrated biomarker response (IBR) were applied to assess the hepatotoxicity of CPF

Galectins are β-galactoside sugar binding proteins which function as important pattern recognition receptors (PRRs) in innate immunity. Here, we identified a galectin-9 gene from koi carp (Cyprinus carpio), named kGal-9. The ORF of kGal-9 is 963 bp in length, which encodes a polypeptide of 320 amino acids without either signal peptide. The predicted molecular weight is 36.25 kDa, and the isoelectric point is 8.3. Multiple sequence alignment showed that the putative kGal-9 contains two carbohydrate recognition domains (CRD), which are conserved in Galectin-9s. The phylogenetic tree showed that

In mammals, nemo-like kinase 2 (NLK2) is a conservative protein kinase involved in Wnt/β-catenin signaling pathway and immune response. However, the role of NLK2 in immune response in teleost remain unclear. In this study, we identified an ortholog of mammalian NLK from grass carp (Ctenopharyngodon idellus) named CiNLK2. CiNLK2 shares a high level of homology with the counterparts, especially with that of Cyprinus carpio. CiNLK2 was ubiquitously expressed in all tested tissues (liver, brain, spleen, gill, kidney and eye) and its expression was up-regulated under the treatment with poly I:C or

Electron-beam irradiation (EBI) is an efficient, safe, and nonthermal sterilization technique that is extensively used in food preservation research. Here we report the effects of different EBI doses (0, 4, 8 kGy) and preservation temperatures (room temperature [RT], 4 °C) on the muscle water distribution and muscle quality indices of silver carp chunks (SCCs). The highest entrapped water content was found in the 4-kGy-irradiated/4-°C-stored samples. The expressible moisture content (EMC) of the SCCs increased with increasing irradiation dose and was significantly lower in the RT group than in

The extensive use of doxycycline in aquaculture results in drug residue violations that negatively impact human food safety. This study aimed to develop a physiologically based pharmacokinetic (PBPK) model for doxycycline to predict drug residues and withdrawal times (WTs) in grass carp (Ctenopharyngodon idella) after daily oral administration for 3 days. Physiological parameters including cardiac output and organ weights were measured experimentally. Chemical-specific parameters were obtained from the literature or estimated by fitting to the observed data. The model properly captured the obs

In mammals, the tachykinin 3 (TAC3)/tachykinin receptor 3 (TACR3) systems have been confirmed to play an important role in the regulation of puberty onset. Using grass carp pituitary cells as the model, our recent study found that the TAC3 gene products could significantly induce somatolactin α (SLα) synthesis and secretion via TACR3 activation. In the present study, we seek to examine if pituitary TACR3 can serve as a regulatory target and contribute to TAC3 interactions with other SLα regulators. Firstly, grass carp TACR3 was cloned and tissue distribution showed that it could be highly dete
