Progression and recovery of Parkinsonism in a chronic progressive MPTP-induction model in the marmoset without persistent molecular and cellular damage.

Chronic exposure to low-dose 1-methyl-4-phenyl-1,2,3,6-tetrahydropyridine (MPTP) in marmoset monkeys was used to model the prodromal stage o … ylase (TH)-positive dopamine (DA) neurons in the substantia nigra. Also levels of TH in putamen and caudate nucleus were unaltered, no differences were observed in DA, serotonin or nor-adrenalin levels in the caudate nucleus, and proteomics analysis revealed no global changes in protein expression in these brain areas between treatment groups. Our findings indica …

Conversion, dissociative amnesia, and Ganser syndrome in a case of "chameleon" syndrome: anatomo-functional findings.

The term "chameleon" was first used in the seventeenth century by Sydenham to describe a patient with a protean semiology. We report a singl … d tomography examination showed bilateral temporal, frontal and a right caudate (in the head of the caudate nucleus) hypoperfusion concordant with a common mechanism of repression in these disorders.

[Cerebral deep vascular architectures and subcortical infarcts].

The lenticulostriate arteries (LSA) supply the lateral half of the head of the caudate nucleus, entire putamen, anterior limb, genu and the superior part of the internal capsule (IC) and a part of the corona radiata. The LSA consists with medial, intermediate and lateral branches. The medial branches perfuse the lateral segment of the globus pallidus, the head of the caudate nucleus and the anterior limb of the IC. The intermediate branches supply the anterior half of the LSA territory, while the lateral branches supply the posterior half. The anterior cerebral artery (ACA) perforators, predom…

Positron emission tomography/computed tomography dual imaging using 18-fluorine flurodeoxyglucose and 11C-labeled 2-β-carbomethoxy-3-β-(4-fluorophenyl) tropane for the severity assessment of Parkinson disease.

The value of dual imaging mode for the severity assessment of Parkinson disease (PD) is explored by conducting positron emission tomography … FDG metabolism. Statistically significant difference is observed for theC-CFT absorption among the caudate nucleus and the anterior, middle, and posterior nuclei of the bilateral basal ganglia of the PD and healthy control groups. In the PD group, the bilateral caudate nucleus and the anterior, middle, and posterior parts of the putamen show decreased DAT distri …

Topographical projections from the posterior thalamic regions to the striatum in the cat, with reference to possible tecto-thalamo-striatal connections.

Projections from the posterior thalamic regions to the striatum were studied in the cat by the anterograde tracing method after injecting wheat germ agglutinin-horseradish peroxidase conjugate (WGA-HRP) into the caudalmost regions of the lateroposterior thalamic nucleus (caudal LP), suprageniculate nucleus (Sg) and magnocellular division of the medial geniculate nucleus (MGm). The results were further confirmed by the retrograde tracing method after injecting WGA-HRP into the regions of the caudate nucleus (Cd) and putamen (Put) where afferent fibers from the caudal LP, Sg and MGm were distrib…

Saccadic eye movements in idiopathic blepharospasm.

Visually guided saccades, memory-contingent saccades, and antisaccades were studied with an infra-red reflection technique in 12 patients with idiopathic blepharospasm and in controls. Latencies of the three kinds of saccades were prolonged. Peak velocities and gains did not differ. Our results indicate an initiation defect in the saccadic system, which may be localized in the caudate nucleus.

Molecular glucose imaging reveals functional brain reconfiguration by subthalamic deep brain stimulation in Parkinsonian rats.

BACKGROUND: In order to elucidate the neuromodulatory mechanisms underlying therapeutic subthalamic deep brain stimulation (DBS), we here reverse-translate a methodological pipeline that integrates neurostimulation effect parameterization and molecular imaging. METHODS: 18F-fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography was performed in a human-mimicking A53T alpha-synuclein Parkinson's disease rat model and in control rats under both stimulation ON and OFF conditions, with additional CT scans acquired for each rat. Patient-derived approaches-including electrode modeling, electric field esti

Brain regions modulated during covert visual attention in the macaque.

Neurophysiological studies of covert visual attention in monkeys have emphasized the modulation of sensory neural responses in the visual co … nally linked to attention - mid-STS areas (anterior FST and parts of IPa, PGa, TPO), as well as the caudate nucleus. A control experiment using a second-order orientation stimulus showed that the observed modulation in a subset of these mid-STS areas did not depend on visual motion. These results identify the mid-STS areas (anterior FST and parts of IPa, PGa, TPO …

[Effect of aminazin and haloperidol on the content of glial fibrillar acid protein in the rat brain].

The immune-enzyme analysis was used to determine the quantity of glial fibrillar acid protein in the water-soluble extracts of frontal and limbic cortex, caudate nucleus, medulla oblongata of rats before and after administration of aminazin and haloperidol. The obtained results testify to a decrease of the protein content under the action of both neuroleptics only in the limbic brain cortex of rats.

Caudate and cerebellar involvement in altered P2 and P3 components of GO/NoGO evoked potentials in children with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder.

Previous studies showed reduced activity of the anterior cingulate cortex (ACC) and supplementary motor area during inhibition in children w … d contribution of the frontal areas but also by a stronger contribution of the anterior part of the caudate nucleus in these children compared with TDC. While the reduction of the NoGO-P3 component in children with ADHD was essentially explained by a reduced contribution of the dorsal ACC, the higher NoGO-P2 amplitude in these children was concomitant to the redu …

[Three cases of clinically diagnosed corticobasal degeneration--neuroimaging studies with MRI, SPECT and PET].

We report three cases of clinically diagnosed corticobasal degeneration: a 63-year-old male, a 63-year-old female and a 62-year-old female. … the patients in our study. FDOPA-PET analysis revealed reduction of uptake in both the putamen and caudate nucleus, predominantly in the caudate nucleus, which suggests that the FDOPA-PET findings correlate with the extrapyramidal signs observed in the case of the 63-year-old male.

Selective involvement of basal ganglia and occipital cortex in a patient with acute endosulfan poisoning.

We report a teenage girl with acute endosulfan poisoning who developed psychosis, generalized tonic-clonic seizures, myoclonic jerks, cortical blindness and limb rigidity. Serial magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) showed bilateral reversible lesions localized to caudate nucleus, putamen and occipital cortex; internal capsule and thalamus were spared. This selective involvement may have a bearing on mechanisms underlying endosulfan toxicity.

D2 receptors and cognitive flexibility in marmosets: tri-phasic dose-response effects of intra-striatal quinpirole on serial reversal performance.

Behavioral flexibility, which allows organisms to adapt their actions in response to environmental changes, is impaired in a number of neuropsychiatric conditions, including obsessive-compulsive disorder and addiction. Studies in human subjects and monkeys have reported correlations between individual differences in dopamine D2-type receptor (D2R) levels in the caudate nucleus and performance in a discrimination reversal task, in which established contingent relationships between abstract stimuli and rewards (or punishments) are reversed. Global genetic deletion of the D2R in mice disrupts rev…

Somatic CAG-repeat expansion drives neuronal loss in Huntington's disease.

Using single-cell technologies on postmortem brains, Handsaker et al.1 have demonstrated that substantial somatic expansion of the CAG repeat that causes Huntington's disease results in progressive transcriptional dysregulation and drives the loss of spiny projection neurons in the caudate.

Are there shared neural correlates between dyslexia and ADHD? A meta-analysis of voxel-based morphometry studies.

BACKGROUND: Dyslexia and Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) are highly comorbid neurodevelopmental disorders (estimates of 25-40% bidirectional comorbidity). Previous work has identified strong genetic and cognitive overlap between the disorders, but neural overlap is relatively unexplored. This study is a systematic meta-analysis of existing voxel-based morphometry studies to determine whether there is any overlap in the gray matter correlates of both disorders. METHODS: We conducted anatomic likelihood estimate (ALE) meta-analyses of voxel-based morphometry studies in which ind
