To elucidate the pathogenesis of immunological diseases induced by the drug D-Penicillamine (D-Pen) the requirements for sensitization to this drug were investigated. Mice were subcutaneously (s.c.) injected into one hind footpad with a solution of D-Pen without adjuvant, and reactivity to D-Pen was determined in the popliteal lymph node assay (PLNA) by weight increase of the draining PLN, the incorporation of 3H-thymidine, and trapping of 51Cr-labeled syngeneic lymphocytes in the draining PLN. The peak of the primary PLN response was obtained between day 7 and 10 after injecting 1 mg of D-Pen

Six of 276 prepubertal testicular specimens had atypical germ cells. Specimens from 3 intersex patients met the criteria for intratubular germ cell neoplasia, unclassified type (IGCNU). Of the remaining 3 specimens (2 patients), 1 from a Down syndrome patient had centrally positioned germ cells with mild nuclear enlargement and hyperchromasia and expressed fetal germ cell markers (Oct3/4, placental alkaline phosphatase, CD117); it was classified as "delayed germ cell maturation". The remaining 2 specimens (1 patient) were diagnosed as IGCNU but, in retrospect, the patient had an undiagnosed in

Regular physical activity or exercise training can lead to heart enlargement known as cardiac hypertrophy. Cardiac hypertrophy is broadly defined as an increase in heart mass. In adults, cardiac hypertrophy is often considered a poor prognostic sign because it often progresses to heart failure. Heart enlargement in a setting of cardiac disease is referred to as pathological cardiac hypertrophy and is typically characterized by cell death and depressed cardiac function. By contrast, physiological cardiac hypertrophy, as occurs in response to chronic exercise training (i.e. the 'athlete's heart'

Anterior mediastinal and adenoid masses in children after cessation of chemotherapy for malignant disease often cause a diagnostic problem. Differential diagnosis of thymic enlargement and adenoid hyperplasia from recurrence frequently poses a challenge both for the radiologist and the physician. In this study the authors evaluated 491 patients with different malignant tumors for thymic and adenoid hyperplasia. Thymic hyperplasia was seen in 18 patients (5 Hodgkin disease (HD), 5 non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL), 4 Wilms tumor, 2 germ cell tumor, 1 Ewing sarcoma, and 1 neuroblastoma), only adenotons

The damage of the adrenal gland by snake venoms needs to be clarified. Lethality (LD50) of Bothrops venezuelensis (Bv) venom was established by intraperitoneally mice injections. Preparation of specimens for transmission electron microscopy samples from cortex adrenal gland biopsies at 3, 6, and 24 h was processed. The quantitative description by the principal component analysis (PCA) of the adrenal gland was as follows: thickening of the capillary endothelium, area of the capillary lumen, cell nucleus area, enlargement of the perinuclear space, number of mitochondria, area of the mitochondria

Increased tubular epithelial cell proliferation is a prerequisite for cyst formation and expansion in polycystic kidney disease (PKD). Rapamycin is a potent antiproliferative agent. The aim of the present study was to determine the effect of rapamycin on tubular cell proliferation, cyst formation, and renal failure in the Han:SPRD rat model of PKD. Heterozygous (Cy/+) and littermate control (+/+) male rats were weaned at 3 wk of age and then treated with rapamycin 0.2 mg/kg per d intraperitoneally or vehicle (ethanol) for 5 wk. Vehicle-treated Cy/+ rats had a more than doubling of kidney size

We reported the case of a 35-year-old man with Klinefelter's syndrome and a malignant Leydig cell tumor of the testis. Bilateral gynecomastia and right testicular enlargement led the patient to seek medical assistance. Despite initial orchidectomy two years later the patient developed lung and iliac lymph node metastases. The tumor appeared to be refractory to chemotherapy and to hormonal treatments including op'DDD. Finally, the patient died within 20 months of developing metastases. Leydig cell tumor is an exceedingly rare tumor, especially when associated with Klinefelter's syndrome. This a

A 4-year and 10-month old female Pembroke Welsh Corgi presented with an enlarged right popliteal lymph node, and a histopathological diagnosis of nodal marginal zone lymphoma (nMZL) was made. After resection of the lymph node, follow-up observation was continued without chemotherapy. At 22 months after initial presentation, the dog developed enlargement of peripheral lymph nodes, and the histopathological diagnosis was late-stage nMZL. Multidrug chemotherapy induced clinical complete remission, but the tumor relapsed with enlargement of peripheral and abdominal lymph nodes 42 months after init

Langerhans cell histiocytosis (LCH) is a rare clonal proliferative disease, with an incidence rate of 4.0-5.4/1 million individuals. LCH encompasses a spectrum of disorders with diverse clinical presentations ranging from a single organ to multiple organ involvement. LCH rarely involves the thyroid gland. We presented a case with LCH of thyroid gland. The patient had painless progressive neck enlargement and then diabetes insipidus. Ultrasonic scan and magnetic resonance imaging scan revealed nodular goiter and pituitary stalk enlargement, respectively. Histopathological analysis revealed feat

IgG4-RSD should be suspected in any patient presenting with lacrimal or salivary gland enlargement, particularly if male and manifesting mild glandular dysfunction. A serum IgG4 level, if increased, may be helpful, although a gland biopsy staining for IgG4-positive plasma cells is the definitive test. Primary low-grade B cell lymphomas of the glandular tissue, specifically MALT lymphoma and other glandular malignancy, should be considered, particularly in patients with asymmetric glandular enlargement. Patients with idiopathic uveitis should have a thorough evaluation to exclude malignancy, in

We report 2 patients with breast cancer who were treated with surgery and adjuvant chemotherapy for stage IIa and stage I breast cancers. Follow-up CT scans showed an anterior mediastinal mass, raising concern for tumor recurrence. Thymectomy performed on the first patient, and close follow-up with radiographic studies on the second patient, revealed benign thymic enlargement. Thymic hyperplasia can occur after cytotoxic chemotherapy and may be due to rebound enlargement after initial atrophy caused by chemotherapy. Thymic hyperplasia after chemotherapy has been reported mostly in young age gr

Nine of 15 boys with severe long-standing primary hypothyroidism were found to have macroorchidism. All 15 patients had elevated thyroid-stimulating hormone levels. However, only those patients with testicular enlargement had striking elevations of serum prolactin and gonadotropin values. The response to gonadotropin-releasing hormone in our patients was blunted, in contradistinction to that of children with true precocious puberty. In spite of the elevated levels of luteinizing hormone, the serum testosterone levels were in the prepubertal range, explaining the lack of peripheral manifestatio

A 3-year-old girl affected by a virilizing tumor of the adrenal gland, without significant elevation in the levels of 17 ketosteroids (17-KS) urinary excretion, was studied clinically. Her symptoms started abruptyly at the age of 2, with progressive enlargement of the clitoris and the appearance of pubic hair. In various tests, the 17-KS levels barely exceeded the upper normal limits and at times remained within normal limits. The retropneumoperitoneum X-ray suggested an enlargement of the right adrenal gland and the presence of a neoplasm, which was actually discovered during surgery. Histopa

Transitional cell carcinoma is an uncommon disease of the renal pelvis, the diagnosis of which depends largely upon radiological investigation. Thirty-eight such tumours in 37 patients have been reviewed to establish the examination of choice. High-dose excretion urography, tailored to the presenting problems, is the primary investigation and the results fall into five main groups. Each presents different differential diagnostic problems. Discrete filling defects within the pyelogram (group I) may be overlooked, but, when seen, can be diagnosed on urography alone. Filling defects with dilated

Leucine-rich repeat kinase 2 (LRRK2) has been implicated in the pathogenesis of Parkinson disease. It has been shown that Lrrk2 knockout (KO) rodents have enlarged lamellar bodies (LBs) in their alveolar epithelial type II cells, although the underlying mechanisms remain unclear. Here we performed proteomic analyses on LBs isolated from Lrrk2 KO mice and found that the LB proteome is substantially different in Lrrk2 KO mice compared with wild-type mice. In Lrrk2 KO LBs, several Rab proteins were increased, and subunit proteins of BLOC-1-related complex (BORC) were decreased. The amount of surf

A small population of human T-cell leukemia virus Type I (HTLV-I) carriers develop adult T-cell leukemia after a long incubation period. The results of a series of experiments using animal models suggest that insufficiency of HTLV-I-specific T-cell response induced by vertical HTLV-I infection allows enlargement of the HTLV-I-infected cell reservoir in vivo, a crucial risk factor of adult T-cell leukemia. In this review it is proposed that prophylactic Tax-targeted vaccines for the high-risk group of adult T-cell leukemia, which is characterized by low HTLV-I-specific T-cell response and high

A case of monoclonal plasma-cell dyscrasia with marked spleen and liver enlargement, though without adenopathy, is described. A diagnosis of primary macrocryogelglobulinaemia was reached following immunoelectrophoresis, immunodiffusion, analytic ultracentrifugation and immunofluorescence. Splenectomy was performed to relieve compression disturbances. Four months after surgery, diabetes insipidus began. This was probably caused by the paraprotidopoietic neoplastic proliferation of Waldenström's disease, its effect being felt the sites of ADH production.

INTRODUCTION: Castleman's disease or angiofollicular lymph hyperplasia is a rare disease with two identified clinical forms. Unicentric or localized form is characterized by isolated growth of lymph nodes, most often in mediastinum, and multicentric form is expressed as systemic disease with spread lymphadenopathy, organomegaly and presence of general symptoms of the disease. Histological types are hyalovascular, plasma-cell and transitive (mixed) cell.
CASE REPORT: This case report shows a woman, 59 years old, with unicentric form of plasma-cell type of Castleman's disease. Unicentric form i
