Interfacial ion transport in cellulose nanocrystal-based ionogels with low ionic liquid content.

This study investigates the gel formation of cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) in a hydrophobic ionic liquid, 1-hexyl-3-methylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide (HMIm-TFSI), with the addition of a co-solvent, dimethylformamide (DMF). CNC-based ionogels prepared with very low HMIm-TFSI contents (0.1-0.5 wt%) exhibit higher molar ionic conductivity than gels containing larger amounts of HMIm-TFSI. Application of electric fields to CNC mixtures containing 0.4 wt% HMIm-TFSI induces CNC alignment but does not enhance macroscopic ionic conductivity, indicating that conductivity is not governe…

Highly negatively charged carbonized polymer dots/cellulose microspheres for efficient blood LDL removal.

Hemoperfusion is an effective technique for removing low-density lipoprotein (LDL) from the bloodstream, with the performance of the adsorbent critical to its efficacy. This study innovatively introduces carbonized polymer dots (CPDs), which exhibit excellent biocompatibility and structural versatility, as a new functional ligand in hemoperfusion. A novel hemoperfusion adsorbent was prepared using cellulose microspheres as the support material. Here, we synthesized highly negatively charged CPDs using a hydrothermal method facilitated by nitric acid in the presence of citric acid and p-aminosa…

Cellulose-based nanohybrids enabling flame retardancy with mechanical reinforcement in poly(lactide) composites.

Cellulose nanofibrils (CNFs) were used as a scaffold to construct CNF nanohybrids for simultaneous mechanical reinforcement and flame retardancy in poly(lactide) (PLA). A one-pot sol-gel route organized a silica framework, phosphate groups, and urea-derived nitrogen functionalities around the CNF scaffold, producing a structurally coupled organic-inorganic interphase. At optimized nanohybrid loadings, the PLA composites showed increased tensile and flexural strength while achieving UL-94 V-0 classification with effective suppression of melt dripping. Thermal and combustion analyses indicate a …

pH-Responsive Hydroxypropyl Cellulose-Based Membranes for Controlled Mass Transport and Drug Release.

The swelling-regulated transport properties of modified and cross-linked HPC-based hydrogel formulations containing NaCMC and citric acid were studied as stimuli-responsive polymeric membranes under various conditions, including deionized water. Physiological conditions were simulated by evaluating various pH conditions (1.2, 6.8, and 7.4). The pseudo-second-order kinetic model best described the swelling process, suggesting that both solvent uptake capacity and polymer network relaxation contribute to the extent of swelling. The swelling behavior of the hydrogel formulations was significantly

Microcrystalline Cellulose Aspiration Presenting as Interstitial Lung Disease Diagnosed via Transbronchial Lung Cryobiopsy.

Chronic occult aspiration is an underrecognized cause of airway-centered and interstitial lung disease and can mimic inflammatory or fibrotic pulmonary disorders. Microcrystalline cellulose, a widely used pharmaceutical excipient, can provoke a foreign body giant cell reaction when aspirated into the lower respiratory tract. Because aspirated material may be focal, it can be missed on small biopsy specimens, delaying diagnosis and leading to inappropriate treatment. We report a case of a 54-year-old woman with progressive exertional hypoxemia and diffuse ground-glass opacities initially concer…

Design and development of an ethyl cellulose bulk-engineered spherule-based capsule system.

This study addresses a critical challenge in delivering a drug to prevent angina in the early morning hours, aligning with the heart's circadian rhythm. For this purpose, we formulated Isosorbide dinitrate (ISDN) - loaded spherules for delayed release (DR) followed by sustained release (SR) using ethyl cellulose by spheronization technique. DOE-led optimisation is done to develop the design of space for optimized spherules. The DR-coated spherules exhibit possible surface modifications, indicating the presence of a coating layer that can influence the release profile and provide marginally bet…

Cellulose and Nanocellulose Emulsions in Biomedical Applications: From Fundamental Mechanisms to Therapeutic Translation.

Poor aqueous solubility remains one of the most persistent challenges in pharmaceutical development, limiting clinical translation and requiring innovative formulation strategies; approximately 40% of newly discovered pharmaceutical compounds are affected, underscoring the scale of the problem. Emulsion-based delivery systems overcome this limitation by maintaining drugs in a dissolved state, increasing absorption surface area, and enabling controlled release; however, conventional emulsions face thermodynamic instability and coalescence challenges. Cellulose and nanocellulose-cellulose nanocr…

Safe cyanoacetyl microcrystalline cellulose: A novel agent to attenuate UV radiation's inflammatory effects.

Sunlight's ultraviolet radiation is a major cause of both short-term (like sunburn) and long-term (like aging) skin damage. While traditional sunblocks use chemical filters (absorbing UV) or physical/mineral filters (reflecting UV) for prevention, researchers are exploring new topical agents with natural or synthetic ingredients for added protection. Building on our previous work with a safe, antibacterial biomass-derived material-cyanoacetyl microcrystalline cellulose (CAMCC)-this study investigated its ability to protect rat skin from UV induced inflammation. The results showed that the test…

Hydroxypropyl Cellulose Enhances Immune Responses to the Current Seasonal Influenza Vaccine in Mice.

Influenza A and B viruses cause annual epidemics and continue to pose global public health concerns. The most effective approach to preventing or mitigating the severity of influenza is vaccination. Inactivated split influenza HA vaccines are commonly used worldwide due to their strong safety profile and broad range of target groups; however, their efficacy is suboptimal, especially in the elderly. Adjuvants are used to enhance the effectiveness of some influenza vaccines, but few adjuvants have been approved for human vaccines. Previously, we identified hydroxypropyl cellulose as a promising …

The comparison of cellulose regeneration behavior in different solvents after sulfuric acid treatment.

In this study, a high solid/liquid ratio beyond the region normally explored in the conventional processes was applied in the sulfuric acid treatment of cellulose, and different solvents were employed in the cellulose regeneration process. The results showed that sulfuric acid in the swelling state was effective in disrupting the cellulose structure and breaking its internal hydrogen bonds. The crystal type of the cellulose samples regenerated in water was cellulose II, while samples generated in methanol and ethanol showed amorphous structures. Meanwhile, the degree of polymerization (DP), av…

Construction of chitosan/phosphorylated cellulose nanofibrils based aerogel for dual-effect air purification.

PM2.5 particles and formaldehyde can cause irreversible harm to the human body. Therefore, the development of materials for removing PM2.5 and formaldehyde has always been valued. Herein, a charge synergy strategy is proposed to enhance the air purification performance and supply charge to the skeleton, thereby reducing the damage to the mechanical properties of the materials caused by negatively charged functional additives. This strategy constructs a common aerogel skeleton of chitosan and phosphorylated cellulose nanofibrils (CS/PCNF) with negative charges by freeze-drying to reduce the add…
