Micronutrient deficiencies are a major global health problem but are less common in developed nations. If left unidentified and untreated, micronutrient deficiencies can lead to serious, sometimes irreversible, sequelae such as with vitamin A deficiency and vision loss. Providers should recognize these issues not only in chronically ill and hospitalized patients but in those with non-illness-related malnutrition due to parent/child-selected restricted diets. Herein, we present a case of unrecognized chronic, severe, malnutrition due to severe behavioral food selectivity with associated neurolo

Mandibular fractures are the most common facial fractures seen in hospitalized children and their incidence increases with age. Treatment options include soft diet, intermaxillary fixation with eyelet wires, arch bars, circummandibular wiring, or stents. Alternative options include open reduction and internal fixation through either an intraoral or extraoral approach. Many factors complicate the management of pediatric mixed-dentition mandibular fractures: tooth eruption, short roots, developing tooth buds and growth issues. One major factor is the inherent instability of the occlusion in the

BACKGROUND: Intrathoracic kidney (ITK) is a rare congenital disease, with only about 40 pediatric cases reported worldwide to date. ITK associated with congenital diaphragmatic hernia (CDH) is even rarer, and we report a case of an infant with ITK combined with a giant CDH.
CASE DESCRIPTION AND MANAGEMENT: A six-month-old male infant was hospitalized due to "vomiting for 4 days". The child's parents sought a definitive diagnosis and treatment to alleviate the child's suffering. Following a series of examinations and laboratory tests, we determined the child had ITK combined with CDH. We treat

This article has discussed TOF, its occurrence, physiology, medical interventions and nursing implications. In its classic form, TOF consists of four anatomical aberrations: a large VSD, pulmonic stenosis, dextroposition of the aorta, and right ventricular hypertrophy. Surgical palliation versus primary intracardiac repair is a continuing discussion in medical literature. Children who have undergone intracardiac repair for TOF have an excellent prognosis for late survival, near 90% 10 years after repair. Nursing responsibilities in the care of the newborn diagnosed as having TOF encompass the

Two children with legionellosis complicating a relapse of acute lymphoblastic leukemia are reported. A 5-year-old boy with pneumonia had Legionella pneumophila cultured from a tracheal aspirate following a rapid deterioration in his respiratory status and intubation. This child had severe and irreversible granulocytopenia and died in spite of therapy with erythromycin and rifampin added five days later. Combination antimicrobial therapy is suggested for immunosuppressed children with legionellosis if resolution of neutropenia is not readily anticipated. Culture of Legionella sp from respirator
